View Full Version : Question about history as a subject

I am a bit curious about history as a subject in different parts of the world. In Sweden it is very much European history that you focus upon but a bit Asian and Middle East history (often, but not always, in a western perspective). We learn very little South American history.

My question is what kind of history you learn in your university? Is it a World History or is a history well connected with your own parts of the world? What role do you think that history as a subject has in a state?

I Poland about 50% of history is about our country. About 40% is about Europe, 8% about America and just few lessons about Africa and Asia.

I'm studying History at degree level, and we learn global history, and then have the chance to learn any specific histories. We are not taught in any particular direction, but we are taught to accept different interpretation and views. I for one feel that History is probably the most beneficial degrees one can achieve, as it has numerous occupation opportunities, and it makes one think, thus become a better person.

I think History is very interesting subject. I feel that our uni also teach us to accept different interpretation and views. We really focus upon that and the last part we read was called "World Histories" to point out that there are more then the one, and only History. This is very important to realize these a days.

Good luck with your studies!

And thanks all for your answers. I think it is really interest to learn about how other countries handle history as a subject.
