Carrying the Qur-aan in One’s Pocket

Carrying the Qur-aan in One’s Pocket

Ash Shaykh Al ‘Allaamah ‘Abdul ‘Azeez Ibn Baaz

Question: What is the ruling concerning carrying the Qur-aan in ones lower side pocket, while keeping in mind that there are those who say it is impermissible?

Answer: It is not befitting to place the Qur-aan in ones [lower side pocket by the] knee/thigh, it should be carried [in ones upper pocket] by the chest. Carrying it in ones lower pocket by the knee is a form of degradation to it because if that person sits down, the Qur-aan would be upon the floor, so one should not carry it by the knee.

One should place it in his upper pocket by his chest or carry it in his hands, as for putting it in his lower pocket by his knee where if he were to sit down the Qur-aan would be on the floor, doing this is not befitting and should not be done.

:) It would be absurd to carry the Quran around, if one is not going to read it. In the case of someone just carrying the Quran around, wihtout the intention of reading it; is like a donkey carrying some weight; it does not know the contents of what it carries, nor does it know its value. The Quran has been revealed to be read, understood and acted upon with sincerity, not to be stacked up on the highest shelf out of reach, nor to be tied around the neck or kept closed in the pocket.

:) I also carry the Quran with me. As well as teaching Tajweed, Reciting the Quran, sometimes to get an exact reference of a verse number. So there are several uses of carrying it around, but there are some people out there, who carry it around; and have never looked inside (they keep it closed). I've seen in certain households; people have the Quran nicely wrapped up in very beautiful cloth. It is kept well out of reach, on the top shelf, covered with a glass (transparent) door; which is kept locked. :hiding:
