View Full Version : Seafood: halal or haram?

Ok, this is something i know little about. I definatly know that fish and prawns are halal. But how about crabs or those things in a shell i forgot what is the english for them? Some salad dressings contain alcohol, so do some chocolates - are they haram? Ice-cream - rum and raisin is it haram even if there's no real alcohol in it, but just artificial flavour. Crisps - barbecue and chicken flavour are they halal?

on what grounds some foods are considered as halal and some as haram, is there any logical reasoning behind it? i would appreciate quotes or links to quotes in quran and hadiths

ps. i put seafood in the title as this is smth i am most interested in.

there is a hadeeth that says about the sea water 'its water is purifying, and its food is halal'' but there is controversy about those creatures which can alos survive on land from the sea..

as for alcohol in sweets and things.. the prophet (P) said that what is haram in large quantities is also haram in small quantities..

hope this is useful to you insha allah:w:

It's a madhab issue, but since this forum does not promote or tolerate secterian issues it's better i don't mention it. All i will say is that some people hold the opinion that not everything from the sea is purified and Halal
And Allah knows best

I'm not being sarcastic but do they have to be killed or blessed prior to cooking?

well most of the seafood i buy from supermarkets is frozen, so it is already killed. i don't think they have to be blessed prior to cooking, saying bismillah b4 u start eating is enough. that's as far as i know.

Hey.

Hence all kinds of food from the sea are permissible, whether they are plants or animals, alive or dead. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “Lawful to you is (the pursuit of) water-game and its use for food – for the benefit of yourselves and those who travel…” [al-Maa’idah 5:96].

Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah Almighty be pleased with him) said: “ Sayduhu [in arabic] (lit. hunting, pursuit) refers to whatever is taken from it alive, and ta’aamuhu [in arabic] (lit. its food) means whatever is taken dead.”
