NOTE:

If this thread has been done, sorry to double post, I'm new here, and I haven't figured things out yet.

BODY:

Here's my Poll.

What is the best University in the US? The criteria are Location (Coastal, Urban surroundings are desired most), Cost (Money is a big worry for all entering and attending college students), Prestige (You can't judge a book by its cover, but the ballgame is different for college), Tolerance (Its best to attend schools located in Multi-cultural-friendly spots, like NY or Chicago, and schools with available Islamic clubs/organizations).

Now that we've gone through the criteria, I've created a list of the Ten most "perfect" schools I could compile, and I've done some light research on all the schools. The choice is yours, again, this is about OPINION, what YOU like. I'm planning on attending college in my coming years (still in HS), so I want to see what you'd suit best.

I'm a bit Partial. For undergrad work through MS I prefer:

Centenary College of La. Shreveport, La.
My choice is because of it's use of Professors as from major Universities around the world. Also it has a mult-ethnic background and students from around the world make up close to half of the student body. It is also a liberal arts school and offers courses not found elsewhere.
It's location is in a pleasing area. Far from the hustle and bustle of major cities.

My second choice is UT in Austin. It is much less expensive, very diverse culture, excellent Islamic Student Union. Very low cost and very excellent academic offerings.

For Grad school and Ph.D level I prefer LSU Baton Rouge, Good exchange programs with opportunities to study at many cooperating European Universities. Resonsbly priced, good ethnic mixtures.

It depends which school is good for your major.
I took that into account, and all of the schools listed offer a variety of majors, MIT, the world's most prestigious tech school is also one of the best Business schools in the World.

I have no idea which one is the best.:rollseyes But my sister goes to Ohio State University, which is pretty good:happy: and it is the largest University in the state of Ohio and the most famous. My other sister goes to a univresity called Otterbein it is pretty small:) but it focuses on my sister's major "Acounting"..

^^^^^To the Two above me:

Harvard is a bit too "UPSCALE" and U of M is not ranked HIGH ENOUGH!! Both are great schools, but just not "ALL-AROUND." And HARVARD doesn't HAVE A DIVERSE COARSE LOAD! IT DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A TECH DEPT. AND THE U OF M DOESN'T HAVE A SIZEABLE REPUTATION.

As was mentioned by another poster. The choice of school should be determined by a person's desired Major. The purpose of University is to learn to think and be able to communicate effectively with peers in your selected profession. If a school does not have any Academic staff that have demonstrated excellence in your chosen field, it is best to look elsewhere.

John Hopkins is an excellent med School, but I doubt if I would recommend it for a person who desires to go into the field of Aeronautical engineering.

Harvard University should be on that list, full stop. It is one of the largest - if not the largest - collection of Colleges and Universities in the United States. It has plenty of technical studies ---! Those at Harvard also crossregister as a matter of course, so as an undergraduate, I took classes at Harvard Law.

NOT ONLY THAT, IT HAS AN ISLAMIC LAW PROGRAM! The Islamic Legal Studies Program is a great endowment; the Law library therefore has a massive Islamic Legal collection in like 18 languages, and Harvard University Press is churning out scholarly work after work on Islamic Law - check out their website.

And undergraduates can cross-register.

When I was an undergraduate, I took Divinity School courses on Islam with Ali Asani, at the Law School (but the ILSP was out of my skillset!), at the Kennedy School of Government, and at Harvard Business. Ali Asani is one of the reasons I am a practicing Muslim!

And Harvard is not on that list? EXPLAIN, PLEASE.

I don't hate academics, I frelling well adore books, my house is a single, ginormous library - groaning bookshelves on every wall, floor to ceiling.

But me, I'm a gamer wha'. So what's yer thing? Bin slummin' with Sims 2 - o, got me a PS2 (and a Mac laptop, but don't game on the computer), gonna hook up with an xBox 360 soon.

Lessee... Star Wars Battlefront II, Killzone, Destroy All Humans, TimeSplitters series... all the RPGs from Square Enix.

But I'm old-skool and not online... my PS2 is ancient, man. Can't wait for xBox purchase. Looks like Gun and Halo 2 will be quick purchases...

My post (#17) was edited against my wishes because it had the word "girlfriend" in it ("content was deemed inappropriate"). Important information was removed and I wish to protest this decision to delete information about my friend's CS major.

Also, I am saddened that the word "girlfriend" was the cause of my post being edited. Explain why the content was deemed inappropriate?

I would ask the moderators by PM but the "automated message" I received indicated I should not reply.

Your post was actually reported to the moderators for this reason, and upon reading it I did feel some concern. This concern revolves around the fact that this is an Islamic discussion board, and therefore we expect Islamic manners and morals to be respected. I believe you may have discussed this issue with us before somewhere, so I assume you are aware of what I am referring to, and why. I hope you will therefore understand that we are simply acting in the interest of the forum and are not targetting you, as it might seem.

If you wished to retain the important information in your post, may I suggest you simply write "your friend" in future as opposed to "girlfriend", which you are welcome to edit in the post in question.

Also, if you have any such concerns in future, please feel free to pm the staff since the automated message only informs you of our action and is meant to indicate that is is automated, and does not mean that we are not to be contacted for problems.

Jazakallahu Khayr,

:sl: btw.. on a secodn though.. its irrelevent which uni u go to... my advise is if ur after enterin a particular course... apply 2 the uni that demands the highest mark for that course... coz wats more important is the cohort ur with.....

like i knwo for fact that the best uni in one country has some lectures where its just total chaos... absolutely noisy and no one listens.. and what unotice is it tends to be the subjects where the ppl that do it require really low marks... so it tends to b ppl who are unmotivated n careless

on the other hand courses that requrie real high marks... there might be 50 times mroe ppl in the theatre but its sooo quiet and u can actually concentrate....

take care all the best
