Keeya haal he?

Cool! Thanks for that!
Do you say the 'h' sound or does it get swallowed in the pronounciation?

Of course the next question is, how do you answer 'I am fine' or any other reply?

Peace

Thanks!

Is the 'ee' pronounced like the English 'ee' (as in 'bee'), or like a long 'e'?
What's the difference (in pronuciation) between 'eh' and 'ee'?

Same with the 'aa'. Is it pronounced like a long 'a'?

in meh it is pronounced long 'e' but in teek it is pronounced like bee

If not, perhaps you should! :giggling:

The problem with learning a language is that you really have to speak it to learn. It may take me a while to pluck up the courage to address my Pakistani neighbours ... but one day I will! ;D
In the meantime we can practise at home. Okay??

We are only just starting, sis!

lol, dont worry abt it being hard.

to make it easy, we will spell it th way its pronounced

next sentence : "i live in the uk"

i = me ( instead of pronoucing it "me" as we wud in english with an "ee" sound, in urdu we pronounce the 'e' like we do in "egg"
mi = in ( this 'i' will be pronounced like it is in igloo )
rehtee = live ( n this is pronounced th way its spelt )
houn >>> this might be hard to pronounce ( its not pronounce "hoo", nor is it pronounced "ho" as in th father christmas "ho ho ho" :p but its a cross between them both. the 'n' is silent

say "who" like u normally wud in english
now say "who" agen but this time u gotta touch on th "n" slightly
notice wen u do this, u wud find th sound coming out of ur nose

remember : a cross between ho and hoo, touch on the n slightly, n the sound should come slightly from th nose

anyway altogether wud be :

"me uk mi rehtee hou" = "i live in th uk" ( i gave the U.K as an example, but u can say whichever place, according to wer u live )

now try it :)

I didn't realise you were not well when I wrote this. Sorry, islamgyal! :uhwhat

About learning Urdu ... remember that I came into this forum in the first place to understand my Muslim neighbours better.
Now I have a better understanding of the Islamic faith, learning the language seems the next logical step ...

I am still soooo frustrated with the Muslim women in my neighbourhood, who have lived in this country for years without attempting to learn English!
Well, if they won't learn English, I'll have to make an effort at Urdu ... so there!!
Problem is, it may take me a long while. :rollseyes

Peace and well-being for you, sister! :sister:

Hi glo, just wanted to say, urdu is not the muslim language or islamic in any way. arabic is the *muslim language*

Right, I have written down what we have gone through so far.

How does this sound:
Me UK mi rehtee hou.
Mera naam glo hain. App ka kya naam hai?
Meh teek taak hun. Keeya haal he?

How do I ask somebody's age?
How old are you? I am ... years old.

How about other adjectives to describe feelings? Instead of saying 'I am fine', how do I say 'I am sad/happy/ill/hungry/thirsty/angry/lonely/tired etc?

Hi amani

You are of course right.
All the Muslims in my local community are from Pakistan, and I understand that the speak Urdu.
Are Punjabi and Hindi also languages spoken in Pakistan? If so, how different are they from Urdu? I mean, if I learn Urdeu, would a Punjabi speaker still understand me?

Thanks for your comments. It's helpful to think about these things. :)

Just to clarify what bro H4RUN said ^^

muj hai (like you say 'hey') bhuuk (like the scottish people say book 'boook') lagi heh

That means: "I am hungry"

Allaah Almighty knows best.

Peace.
Thanks! :)

If 'Muj hai bhuuk lagi heh' means 'I am hungry', and 'Meh teek taak hun' means 'I am fine' ... why are the two sentences so very different in Urdu, but so similar in English.

In English all you have to do, is replace one adjective by another ... is that not the case is Urdu??? :?

I think it's alot easier if a person learns it while they're being brought up. I don't know it fully myself, even though i speak a similar language to it. But i think snakelegs is learning it..

Peace.

I am beginning to think that I should look for a proper course, where I live. Or persuade one of my neighbours to teach me.
I'm not sure Urdu is a langauge easily learned from books or internet.
I'm not sure Urdu is a language easily learned at all!! :uuh:

yes, if you can find a course, that would be great. (for me there is no such option). it would also be excellent if you could get one of your neighbours to teach you. i had a russian landlady once who asked me if i would teach her english - i said sure, if you will teach me russian. unfortunately this arrangement didn't last very long, so i didn't learn a whole lot. maybe you could offer to help one of your neighbours with english if they will teach you urdu.
urdu is very beautiful - one thing i like about it is you get to learn some arabic and farsi words as well and i can recognize many of the arabic words because they are similar to hebrew.
i am having a real hard time trying to study on my own. either i am a lot dumber than i was when i was young, or i thought i was much smarter than i really was!! partially, it is my own fault because i don't make myself work with the grammar. so i am getting an increasing vocabulary but can't really say much of anything, or put a sentence together. i've been at it for almost 4 years now. i can read articles from the bbc a lot of dictionary, the children's stories are of course the best.
i find the script normally used in urdu quite hard to read - tho finally it is getting easier, but the fonts the bbc uses are not difficult to learn.
best is to learn some common friendly phrases here, so you can break the ice with your neighbours. i think when they see that you are trying to learn, they will warm up towards you. start with some simple greetings and work your way up to asking them if they will teach you if you teach them english.
good luck.
kittygyal - you're welcome.
