Is TV Haram?

The answer to this question is simple as NO

Yes you heard me correct - NO

TV is not haram

And anyone who says so must counter my arguments point by point to prove their point or else I am not going to listen to what sheikh jim bob bubba han said or whatever!

What I am using is common sense - logic - reasoning and most importantly my free will to decide based on all the mentioned criterion.

So enough said about how I feel, now lets move to the facts.

Introducing the TeleVision



Whats haram about a box made of plastic with a glass screen and electronic components inside?

Is it made of pork?
Or maybe it emits pork and alchol beams?
Or maybe there is a casino inside?

Incase you believe any the above 3...then lets see whats inside!



Viola - no pork , no wine and no casino!! Its all just a bunch of electronic components and stuff like plastic, metal and glass...surprised?

Well the above illustrations are ofcourse from the old style TV's nowadays we have LCD/Plasma and all sorts of thin TV's but they too are made from electronic components, metal, plastic and glass.



So whats haram here?

Can someone answer it?

Now if anyone says TV is haram will indeed be a liar for we have not found anything haram inside the TV or outside it at all! Unless TV manufacturers are secretly coating the TV's with pork sauce or something lol.

That ends the simple logical, factual reasoning that proves that TV is not haram.

TV Programs & Halal vs Haram

Which one would you watch?

So whats on TV tonight?

a) Is it a movie called "100 Naked people dancing in the street" ?

b) Is it a lecture by Zakir Naik ?

c) Is its an educational documentary on Animals of China ?

If your answer was (A) then you are committing haram VIA the TV

If your answer was (B) then you are gaining hasanat and knowledge VIA the TV

If your answer was (C) then you are gaining knowledge VIA the TV

3 different results from the same device - wow!

In comparison

Your neighbour just gave you a swiss army knife as a present, what do you use it for?

a) You chop up your entire family and murder them in cold blood

b) You cut apples with it and eat them

c) You use it to make wood carvings of Quranic Ayahs to decorate your house

Now obiviously (A) is wrong wrong wrong! Totally haram!!!

(B) is oki doki, you get some energy and pleasure from the apple.

(C) is oki doki too, you gain hasanat for glorifying the Quran and also learn wood carving

Once again we see 3 different results from this device known as the knife (just lke we did with the TV)

So on what criterion are we going to say TV is haram and the knife is not, or vice versa?

Will we condem the TV because it has a 100 naked people movie on it and YOU watched it?
Will you cut up your family and blame the knife too?
Maybe you will drink alchol and blame the bottle?

Where do YOU draw the line?

The device known as the Television (TV for short) is infact no less innocent or harmful than the device we call the knife or infact our very own PC (Personal Computer)!

Lets compare this time the TV with the PC

TV you can watch lewedness on it
PC you can watch lewedness on it, infact its easier to!

TV you can hurt your eyes watching too much of it
PC Same with the PC

TV you can listen to music on it
PC same on the pc

Well the list could go on and on....so il get to my point and question....

To those people who argue TV is haram, can you please justify why the TV is haram yet the PC that you use is not?

Answer:
PC You can turn your PC off but TV you cant control whats on it

BUZZZZZ - WRONG ANSWER!
They call it a REMOTE CONTROL..on it are small buttons which you use to control your TV and there is usually a somewhat bigger red button marked OFF.

So is the TV still haram?

OOHHH YES IT IS - The kuffar made it so its imitating the kuffar.

Really? Wow..then please stop wearing underwear because they made that too lol
Not to mention please let us set the example by burning your PC which contains the infidel Intel Chp made by the kuffar too!

Well I could go on with examples and reasoning - but I wont, because it is just getting repetitively boring now.

So my message to the people who are bent on declaring everything as haram is simply this:

Please use logic, reasoning and knowledge, instead of simply saying "its haram"

Stick to watching documentaries, news, countdown and islamic programmes you'll be fine, the other 99% is utter rubbish and simply is a bunch of kufar commiting haraam all day now why wate time watching someone commit haraam.

TV is haraam if you are watching haraam things.

It depends on what you watch. When I was little I used to watch cartoons. Now I just watch the news.

Shaykh Ibn Baaz (may Allah have mercy on him) said in al-Fataawa 3/227:

With regard to television, it is a dangerous device and its harmful effects are very great, like those of the cinema, or even worse. We know from the research that has been written about it and from the words of experts in Arab countries and elsewhere enough to indicate that it is dangerous and very harmful to Islamic beliefs ('aqeedah), morals and the state of society. This is because it includes the presentation of bad morals, tempting scenes, immoral pictures, semi-nakedness, destructive speech, and Kufr. It encourages imitation of their conduct and ways of dressing, respect for their leaders, neglect of Islamic conduct and ways of dressing, and looking down on the scholars and heroes of Islam. It damages their image by portraying them in an off-putting manner that makes people despise them and ignore them. It shows people how to cheat, steal, hatch plots and commit acts of violence against others. Undoubtedly anything that produces so many bad results should be stopped and shunned, and we have to close all the doors that could lead to it. If some of our brothers denounce it and speak out against it, we cannot blame them, because this is a part of sincerity towards Allah and towards other people.

Whoever thinks that this device (TV) can be free of these evils and can be used only for good purposes if it is censored properly is exaggerating and is making a big mistake, because the censor may miss things and most people nowadays want to imitate the foreigners. It is very rare to find censors who are doing their job properly, especially nowadays when most people are only interested in time-wasting entertainment and things that turn people away from true guidance. Reality bears witness to that.

We ask Allah to keep us safe from all evil for He is the Most Generous.


The trouble is when we say we will only watch things that are not haram we start with good intentions but unless we have true fear of the haram of TV then we can still end up watching things that are not great if we watch TV then we should stick to Islam channel or peace TV or better still pick up the Quran and read instead

Isn't that the truth. There truly isn't that much entertaining or educational on tv anymore. I end of watching one or two programs (not including the news) then I just spend the rest of my time reading or working on my college studies.

The TV (hardware) is still halal, but that TV program is haram.
We are allowed to have TV, even if all TV programs are haram. And if this is really happen, the only thing that we can do is ............ produce halal TV programs.

Nowadays in 2009 its hard to find non- sinful things on air, maybe except sport and educational channels. The whole american pop culture (from movies to music) is a Babilon.

I meant something like that..once I heard the imaam saying that 'towards the end of times people will ignore the recitation of the quran and gather around the shaitaan'. Hence the type of haraam programes

Well there are some educational programs. I watch discovery, history and crime channel sometimes.

I even watch BBC Panorama. So it is not that difficult to find something good to watch.

What about music that is played on nearly every tv show?

anyway I cant say much because I'm always watchin top gear (fifth gear sometimes)

and also is it the same with movies? because movies have alot of music in them and some of it sticks in your head, like music from the bourne movies.
