Go on Tools and click on Downloads [ctrl and J] and that should bring up the Download Manager.
And i think by default, the things are supposed to be saved on your desktop. But check on Tools - Options - Downloads to see where the files are being saved to insha'Allaah.

Try doing this insha'Allaah:
Tools - Options - Downloads
Then tick:
- Show Download Manager window when a download begins.
and
untick
- Close the Download Manager when all downloads are complete.
Click on
OK and try saving a picture, the same way you mentioned earlier
mouse rightclick, save Image as
The download box should come up insha'Allaah, and it won't close once the download is complete insha'Allaah.
So if the picture is within the downloaded list, double click on the image [within the download list] and see if it works. And try to search around in the location where you might have saved it to (i.e. desktop.)

Perhaps you could try a 3rd party download manager which integrates into firefox such as

Who cares about firefox when you have The New Internet Explorer 7.0!!!
This is basically a Carbon Copy of firefox but uses less than a quarter of Hard disk space.
And it is also very secure, you get same as you would have on firefox:
IE 7 Reply

OK,
Click here to install it. Click on install. Then restart firefox.
Now say for example you want to save an image.
You right click it and select
dTaOneClick! and for some reason it didn't work for me :?
Anyway you can use this to download links.

I really don't know why firefox won't let you download the files directly.
However, look at
Firefox Addons and see if you can find something suitable.
