salams sister.

I have three children, so do I have to choose the eldest ones name for my kunya? or does it not matter?

The most choose the oldest child's name.

But there are not rules consurning this.
A example is Abu Hurayra. Hurayra means letterly cittens. He loved kittens and he was named the father of the cittens.

Soo what's yours?

Kunya is like an Islamic nickname!

You can put infront of it Oum or Abu.

It shouldn't be your name. Cuzz your not the mother of you :P

My kunya is Umm 'Abdullah... although that's quite obvious. I picked it because 'Abdullah is one of the names that is most beloved to Allah, as you have already stated.:)

It doesn't have to be the name of your child.:) I believe the kunyah of Imam Bukhari (rh) was Abu 'Abdullah though he didn't have a son by that name, I think.

I'd choose one, but I know whatever I say my kids name is gonna be, I most probably won't name him/her that anyway, since I keep finding new names I like. And having a kunya will make me sound way older, so er yeah, I always skip on it.

Although one like Abu Hurayrah and Abu Turab which is descriptive and interesting is nice.

Oops, I didn't see this until now. I'm sorry. Yes, it does mean that.

It was given to Sayyidina 'Ali (Radiallahu Anhu) when Sayyidina Rasulullah (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) saw him sleeping on the ground with his back covered in dust. Sayyidina Rasulullah (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) started removing the dust and woke him up addressing him as Abu Turab.

So yeah, thats the story behind the name.
