The Islamic Stand on Music
Imam al-Madina al-Munawarrah Salaah al-Budayr
Rabee-uth-Thaanee 8, 1422 (June 29,2001)

All praise is due to Allah. I testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, He is One and has no partner. I equally testify that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. May peace and blessings be upon him, his household and companions.

“O You who believe. Keep your duty to Allah and fear Him and speak (Always) the truth.(Al-Ahzaab 33:70)

Brothers in faith! Muslims live, under the shade of this great religion, a life full of honour and grace. They find that by virtue of this religion they taste the sweetness of faith, attain true peace of mind and gratification in their worship.

The teachings of this religion adopt a firm stance against any form of evil teachings and whimsical desires of corrupt people in order to protect mankind from his own caprice and lust and to put an end to his anxieties and sorrows. Who is richer than he who adheres to the religion of Allah, though he is economically underprivileged, and who is poorer than he who opposes the religion of Allah though he is financially prosperous!

Fellow Muslims! One thing that saddens the zealous Muslim is to see his brothers in faith seeking happiness through means other than Islam, thereby treating their disease with poison instead of medicine and deluding themselves into believing that satiating their lustful desires will cure them of their ailments. An example of this is the obsession of many people today with listening to music and musical instruments; they justify this unenviable habit of theirs with baseless arguments and excuses. This evil deed is only promoted by those who are already afflicted with the blind following of their lustful desires and listening to shameless female singers. Our prophet Muhammad told us about these people when he said,

“There will be some people among my nation who will regard fornication, wearing of silk (for men), drinking of intoxicants and stringed instruments as lawful. (Al-Bukhaari and others)

Fellow Muslims! It is a great error on the part of anyone who claims to have knowledge and Eemaan to hold that listening to music with its instruments is permissible, considering that it contain every conceivable form of evil.

As a matter of fact, music is a satanic voice that deeply penetrates the human heart and stimulates in it destructive lustful desires, wreaks havoc on mans’ body and soul and fills his ears with obscenities.

Brothers in faith! Let us ask ourselves a question: How can a sane person plunge his noble self into acts of such shameless immorality; acts that believing souls disdain and people of sound nature reject and abhor? Jaabir narrated that the Prophet said,

“I did not forbid you from weeping. I have only forbidden you from making two foolish and horrible noises: a noise when playing and using the instrument of Satan and a noise when you are afflicted with a calamity and you beat your faces, tear your garments and make a satanic wailing. (Al-Haakim)

Anas narrated that the prophet said,

“Two sounds are accursed in this world and the hereafter: (the sound of) musical instruments in time of happiness and wailing during calamity.(Al-Bazaar)

Brothers in Islam! Music is prohibited and condemned by many Qur’anic verses. Allah says,

“And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. Music, singing etc.) to mislead men from the path of Allah without knowledge and takes it (the path of Allah, or the verses of the Qur’an) by way of mockery. For such there will be humiliating torment (in the Hell-fire).(Luqmaan 31:6)

The Prophet said while commenting on this verse,

“It is not permissible to sell singing girls nor to buy them, nor to trade in them. Their price is haraam. This verse was revealed regarding that. (At-Tabaraani)

Abdullah ibn Mas’ood also commented on this verse when he said,

“By Him beside whom no deity is worthy of worship! That (verse refers to) music.

Dear Muslims! Music is the voice of Satan with which he instigates human beings into perpetrating evil deeds and acts of disobedience. It is therefore imperative upon every Muslim to shun him and keep away from him. Allah says in this regard,

“And befool them gradually those whom you can among them with your voice (i.e. songs, music, and any other call for Allah’s disobedience), make assaults on them with your cavalry and infantry, share with them wealth and children (by tempting them to earn money by illegal ways – usury, or by committing illegal sexual intercourse), and make promises to them. But Satan promises them nothing but deceit.(Al-Israa’ 17:64)

Fellow Muslims! Shun music and its instruments for it leads to promiscuity. It is also the trap of Satan by which he lures men to immoral acts. Zayd ibn Al-Waleed said,

“O Omayyads! Keep away from music for it reduces modesty, increases lust and destroys man. It acts in the same way as alcohol and one who is under its influence acts like one who is drunk.

Umar ibn Abdul-Azeez wrote to his sons’ tutor:

“Let your first lesson for them be the hatred of musical instruments that come from Satan and end with the wrath of Allah; for it reached me from trustworthy sources that attending a place where music and its instruments are played grows hypocrisy in the heart as water makes plants grow.

He also wrote a letter to Umar ibn Al-Waleed part of which goes thus,

“And your introduction of musical instruments and flutes is an innovation in Islam and I have decided to send to you those who will chop off that evil head of yours.

Brothers in faith! Beware of things that lead to Allah’s wrath. Appearance of music and stringed instruments is a cause of Allah’s wrath and His chastisement. Aboo Maalik Al-Ash’aree narrated that the Messenger of Allah said,

“There will be a group of people among my nation who will drink alcohol calling it by other names and upon their heads stringed instruments will be played and in their presence songstresses will sing, Allah will cause the earth to swallow them and He will turn them into monkeys and pigs.

â€کImraan narrated that the Messenger of Allah said,

“In this nation there will be humiliation, corruption and slander. The companions asked, “When will that happen O Messenger of Allah? He said, “When songstresses and stringed instruments appear and when alcohol is consumed. (At-Tirmidhi)

Brothers in Islam! Indeed the essence of music, its causes, goals and effects all revolve around the songs of corrupt and immoral people, for music contains commendation of that which Allah detests, boasting about perpetration of what He dislikes and forbids and maybe even exceeding this with music which extols sacrilegious ideas.

If you consider the havoc that songs and instruments have wreaked on the lives of those musicians and their fans you will realise what a terrible impact it has. It leaves clear visible effects on their faces, their speech and their conditions.
When Maalik ibn Anas was asked about what some men in his time regarded as permissible music, he answered,

“It is only the sinful people who do that here.

Fellow Muslims! Listening to music is one of the greatest traps of Satan that he sets to divert people’s attention from the Qur’an. Ash-Shaafiee said,

“I left behind in Baghdad something that heretics introduced which they called Taghbeer with which they distract people from the Qur’an.

Allahu Akbar! This saying of Ash-Shaafiee was about Taghbeer which is poetry which encourages an ascetic life, sung by one while he strikes a rod against a dried skin or something like that, what then will one say about a type of music that is parallel to intoxicants in its effect? Music is nothing more than lustful words that give not peace of mind nor calm the nerves. Glory be to Allah! How easily people get misled!

Brothers in faith! The sense of hearing is a great trust and a huge favour from Allah. He has commanded His slaves to preserve this sense and tells them that they will be held responsible for it. Therefore, using this sense to listen to music and stringed instruments amounts to abuse of this favour. Aboo Hurayrah narrated that the Prophet said,

“The fornication of the tongue is uttering immoral utterances, fornication of the hands is touching and fornication of the feet is walking (unto what is forbidden). The heart desires and wishes but it is the private parts that confirms or denies them.(Muslim)

Fellow Muslims! Extolling music and stringed instruments and regarding musicians as leaders of society means calling people unto error and driving them away from the book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet. The Prophet said,

“Whoever calls unto an error will have the sin equal to that of those who follow him without deducting anything of their own sins. (Muslim)

Brothers in Islam! It is quite disheartening to see a nation which is being persecuted, whose people are being killed, whose honour, lands, and sacred places are being desecrated and who yet still find time to sing and play music as if nothing had happened! We seek refuge with Allah from having such dead unfeeling hearts!

Dear Muslims! Clean yourselves and your ears from idle talk and stringed instruments of Satan and replace them with the Gardens of Paradise that are to be found in Qur’anic reading and Sunnah study circles, you will reap the everlasting fruits, have guidance and find a cure for all diseases of the heart, mind and soul. Be among those whom Allah describes thus:

“And if they pass by some evil play or evil talk, they pass it by with dignity. (Al-Furqaan 25:72)

Fellow Muslims! Fear Allah and be conscious of Him and obey Him. “O you who believe! Fear Allah and be among the truthful.

Brothers in faith! Allah allows the beating of tambourines in marriage ceremonies along with songs that contain no description of women or any other immoral message. That is in order to make the marriage publicised and distinguish between lawful and unlawful marriages. The Prophet said,

“The difference between the lawful and unlawful marriage is the beating of the tambourine and the proclamation of the marriage.

In Saheeh Al-Bukharee, Rubayyia bint Mu’awiyyah said – after her marriage had been consummated – “Some girls were beating a tambourine and praising those of their fathers who had been killed during the Battle of Badr.

Ibn Hajar said,“In the sound hadeeths there is permission for women to do that exclusively. Men should not join with them in that because of the general ruling that forbids men from imitating women.

It is therefore pitiful that some overstep the bounds of this permission by hiring musicians and songstresses who sing immoral songs and play on their musical instruments. These people who hire them spend a huge amount of money in doing so, thereby hurting themselves and disturbing and hurting their neighbours with the noise of that music. They also commit other atrocities like giving the women an avenue to imitate those shameless dances, causing the mixing of the two sexes, wasting time and neglecting prayers among other things.

Brothers and sisters in Islam! Let us therefore shun this type of gathering. Al-Imaam Al-Awzaa’ee said,

“Do not attend a marriage ceremony in which there is drum beating and stringed instruments.

Fellow Muslims! Repent and turn back to Allah. Adhere to the manners of your religion, reform yourselves and hold fast unto the Book of your Lord and the Sunnah of your Prophet and you will prosper and succeed.

Shaykh Salaah Al-Budair

All praise is due to Allaah. May His peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his household and companions.

Brothers in faith! Fear Allaah, for that is the best earning and obey Him. Be dutiful to Allaah and hope for the reward on the Last Day and commit no mischief on the earth.

“O you who believe! Fear Allaah as He should be feared and die not except in the state of Islaam.” (Aal ‘Imraan: 102).

Fellow Muslims! We are nowadays confronted with a relentless war waged by the materialistic western civilization and culture that burns its producers and afflicts them with calamities, misery, immorality, disruption, suicide and all kinds of evils. It is in fact, a civilization that turns their conducts upside down, disorganizes their affairs, exposes them to toil and corrupts their minds. It is a civilization that knows no difference between lawful and unlawful, useful and harmful. It is full of useless markets, clubs and vacant minds! A civilization that is incapable of protecting individuals’ honor nor capable of providing them with meaningful sense of happiness in their life. Such is the reward of those who turn away from the Lord of all the worlds. Theirs is a civilization that is destroyed by its own products. It is a civilization that races towards creating all means of trouble, disturbance and destruction.

Allaah says what translates as, “They destroy not but their own selves, yet they perceive (it) not.” (Al-An‘aam: 26).

He also says what translates as, “Or do you think that most of them hear or understand? They are only like cattle nay, they are even farther astray from the path (i.e. even worse than cattle).” (Al-Furqaan: 43).

He also says what translates as: “They know only the outside appearance of the life of the world and they are headless of the Hereafter.” (Ar-Room: 7).

The above are some of the characteristics of the disbelieving (Kaafir) societies and their immoral cites.

Today, dear Muslims, the disbelieving (Kaafir) world is exporting its woes to the Islamic world by attempting to deprive Muslims of their identity and forcing them into subjection in matters of faith, intellectual, social and moral affairs.

Allaah says what translates as, “They wish that you reject faith as they have rejected (faith) and thus that you all become equal (like one mother).” (An-Nisaa’: 89).

He also says what translates as: “Should they gain upper hand over you, they would behave to you as enemies and stretch forth their hands and their tongues against you with evil and they desire that you should disbelieve.” (Al-Mumtahinah: 2).

They will never cease pursuing this vicious goal with all their efforts. Allaah says what translates as, “And they will never cease fighting you until they turn you back from your religion if they can.” (Al-Baqarah: 217).

The hearts of disbelievers are full of hatred and fear for you and it is these that spur them to fight Islaam and attempt to eliminate it. Allaah says what translates as, “They intend to put out the Light of Allaah with their mouths. But Allaah will bring His Light to perfection even though the disbelievers hate (it).” (As-Saff:8).

One of these enemies said: “When the Qur’aan and the cities of Makkah and Al-Madeenah are wiped out of Arabia, it is then that we can see an Arab man gradually adopt western culture, far from Muhammad and his book.” Such is their evil plan and what their hearts conceal.

Fellow Muslims! The enemies of Islaam have amassed whatever they can of different types of invention in order to fight this Deen (religion) and its adherents and to conquer them ideologically and intellectually. Their action says: “A cup of alcohol and a songsters can do to Muslims more than what a thousand machine guns can do, therefore, plunge them into the depth of materialism and lusts.” These enemies lay siege on Muslim countries through mass media and modern technology and attack them through devilish and lustful satellite channels, which ruin morality and chastity. They aim at destroying our youths, by arousing their passion and spreading immorality within their ranks, making them thereby searching for all possible way to satiate their already aroused lust. The Muslim woman is also not safe from this devilish plan. They wage war against her Hijaab (i.e. covering of the Muslim woman’s body and head) and they strive to deceive her through those repulsive fashion houses, they encourage her to mix freely with men, making thereby ignominy and distress her lot.

There are also misleading call upon Muslims to visit countries of disbelievers and spend their leisure time there. The purpose of these calls is to deceive Muslims and expose them to things that can damage their morality and religion. It is therefore unfortunate that some Muslims, in spite of all these obvious dangers, travel to these countries with their wives and children in order to be regarded as cultured and civilized people.

Brothers in faith! No one can avoid these trials and destructive situation except by strictly and sincerely adhering to the Book of Allaah and Sunnah of His Prophet.

Brothers in Islaam! How can the Muslim nation voluntarily go to those who fight her? How can she happily surrender to him who wants to butcher her? Who can she emulate her enemy in his manners, understanding and thoughts? Who can she turn away from Islaamic teachings and start emulating the Kuffaar? Surely, real loss and destruction lie in following the disbelievers and sinful people. Allaah says what translates as, “O you who believe! If you obey those who disbelieve, they will send you back on your heels, and you will turn back (from faith) as losers.” (Aal-’Imraan: 149).

Fellow Muslims! Islaam does not forbid taking the useful of modern inventions and technology. It only rejects its negative aspects.

Dear brothers! What is the benefit of a civilization in which man’s standard falls and he himself degenerates so much so that he worships other beside Allaah, that he becomes a slave of his money, lust and desire thereby falling into misery and decay. The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said: “Wretched is the slave of gold coins, wretched is the slave of silver coins; wretched is the slave of money and luxurious clothes. If he is given of these things he is pleased but is he is denied them, he becomes displeased. Let such a person perish and relapse and if he is pierced with a thorn, let him not find anyone to take it out for him.” (Bukhaari).

It is actually sad to see some of our tribesmen who speak our language act as middlemen for the west over-praising it and calling to its emulation. These are callers to destruction, error and westernization.

They are callers at the door of hell; whoever answers them, they cast him into Hell-Fire. These people call to emulating the west as if they are ignorant of the cries made by west’s intellectuals themselves warning of the danger of this soul-less civilization and calling unto reforming and salvaging it before it is too late. Allaah says what translates as, “And when it is said to them, ‘make not mischief on the earth’, they say, ‘we are only peacemakers’. Verily! They are the ones who make mischief, but they perceive not.” (Al-Baqarah: 11-12).

Brothers in Faith! It is incumbent on all Muslims, to know the foundations of this civilization and acquaint themselves with its goals, objectives, harms and all things that relates to it. If not, repugnant customs and manners and un-Islamic habits that are products of enemies of Islaam will creep in and establish themselves in Muslim societies and homes. The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said: “The most detestable to Allaah of all people are three: the one who causes transgression in the Sacred Mosque, the one who introduces to Islaam a custom of the time of ignorance and the seeker after someone’s blood in order to shed it with no just cause.” (Bukhaari).

Dear Muslims! You are a community that possesses a divine law that guarantees for those who hold fast unto if perpetual bliss, progress and development. It is a law that illuminates the darkness and it is ‘a Light upon Light’.

Islaam is the only religion capable of salvaging mankind from its misery and despair it is the only guarantor of its happiness.

“Our religion is] the religion of Allaah (Islaam) and which religion can be better than Allaah’s? And we are His worshippers.” (Al-Baqarah: 138).

Be therefore proud of your religion and beware of corruption and falling into Hell. Protect yourselves and your families, take refuge with Allaah from things that scares you, use your God-given wisdom to ponder over the consequences of your deeds and prevent these trials and temptations by being careful, for Satan’s arrows are penetrating. The heart gets affected with powerful harm as eyes get irritated with a small particle.

Fellow Muslims! The Prophet has taught as knowledge by which we can get guidance during trials. He sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said about the trial of Dajjaal (anti-Christ): “Whoever hears of him should keep away from him. By Allaah! A man may meet him, assuming himself a believer and yet follow him (the anti-Christ) as a result of the evidences that he will show.” (Aboo Daawood and others).

Allaah says what translates as, “O you who believe! Ward from yourselves and your families a Fire (Hell) whose fuel is men and stone, over which are (appointed) angels stern and severe, who disobey not, (from executing) the Commands they receive from Allaah, but do that which they are Commanded.” (At-Tahreem: 6).

Brothers in Islaam! Fear Allaah, be conscious of Him and do not disobey Him. “O you who believe! Be afraid of Allaah and be with those who are true (in words and deeds)” (At-Tawbah: 119).

Brothers in Faith! Indeed, every Muslim who is concerned about his religion will feel a great pain when he sees that Muslims are being influenced by Zionist and Christian attacks and the pain becomes greater when one notices that the effect of that attack is increasing every day. Such is Allaah’s decree upon His slaves. He says what translates as: “And surely, We shall try you till We test those who strive hard (for the cause of Allaah) and the patient ones, and We shall test your facts.” (Muhammad: 31).

Dear Brothers! It is by test and examination that treasures are distinguished. It is during severe wars that proud and lofty minds become distinct from lowly ones. People are like treasure, some are precious jewels while some are just valueless metals; some are like healthy and fertile land that produces good plants and pure profits while some are just like bad dung that wastes its seed and destroys its crops.

Fear Allah, reform yourselves and adhere to the worship of your Lord. The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said: “Worshipping Allaah during the time of commotion and disorder is like making a Hijrah to me (in reward).” (Muslim).

O Muslim youths! Rise up your heads and be proud of your religion. Do not imitate the disbelievers in their repulsive habits, traditions. Beware of evil aspects of this civilization. Allaah says what translates as, “Say (to idolaters and unbelievers): ‘O disbelievers! I worship not that which you worship. Nor will you worship that which I worship. And I shall not worship that which you worship. Nor will you worship that which I worship. To you belong your religion, and to me my religion. (Islamic monotheism).’” (Al-Kaafiroon: 1-6).

SUBHANALLAH!!!!!
Excelent article, I thank you greatly for sharing this with us, Alhamdulillah. I pray that Allah puts a hatred* for the society and lifestyle of the west in the hearts of the believers, and a love and appreciation for Allah and the way of life shown to us by Muhammad (pbuh). Ameen.

*I don't mean a hatred towards the people, but rather a hatred for their way of life. It's a big difference. For example I love and care about my parents very much however I find their religion and the things they attribute and say about Allah appauling. At the same time I respect there choice of beliefs and would never say anything to them, or anyone else, to try and hurt their religion or disrespect it. I hope you all can see the difference.

Shaykh Salaah Al-Budayr
Muharram 1, 1423 (March 15, 2002)

All praise is due to Allaah. May peace and blessings of Allaah be upon the Messenger, his household and companions.

Brothers in Faith! Fear Allaah and adhere to the path of the righteous predecessors. Thank Allaah for His Bounties over you and reduce your yearning for the pleasure of this world. Get prepared for suddenness of death, for none has yearning for the pleasures of this world except that he indulges in evil deeds.
“O you who believe! Fear Allaah and keep your duty to Him. And let every person look to what he has sent forth for the morrow, and fear Allaah. Verily, Allaah is All-Aware of what you do.”

(Al-Hashr 59:18)

Fellow Muslims! Know that months and years, days and nights are but periods of work and spans of life that eventually end. Days and nights succeed each other; they bring near that which is far, wear out every new things and bring man to his appointment of the Day of Resurrection.

The wise man does not deceive himself nor does he let himself be deceived by the covetousness over this world. Many a man have started a day but not witnessed its end and many a man have wished to see the morrow but died before his wish would be materialised. Allaah says,

“And Allaah grants respite to none when his appointed time (death) comes. And Allaah is All-Aware of what you do.”

(Al-Munaafiqoon 63:11)

Brothers in Faith! A year has now gone from your lives which gives you a signal that this world is not a permanent home and that there is after it either Paradise or Hell. So, beware of this life and its illusions, for it has deceived many and destroyed many of those who sought it. Ibn ‘Umar narrated: The Messenger of Allaah took hold of my shoulders and said,

“Live in this world as if you are a stranger or a passer-by.”

And Ibn ‘Umar used to say,

“When you are in the evening, do not expect to live till the morning and when you are in the morning, do not expect to live till the evening. Make a provision for the time when you will be sick while you are still healthy and make a provision for the time of your death while you are still living”

(Al-Bukhaaree)

Dear Muslims! A year of yours has now gone as a witness for or against you. So, make enough provision, do a lot of good deeds rectify all your mistakes and zeise the opportunity of time before it becomes too late. Jaabir said:

I heard the Messenger of Allaah while he was admonishing a man, saying, “Zeise the opportunity of five things before five things come to you: your youth before your old age; your health before your illness; your wealth before your poverty; your free time before you are occupied and your life before your death. There is no one to rebuke and correct you after life and there is no other abode after death but Paradise or Hell.”

(Al-Haakim)

O the one who has only a few more moments to live in this world and does not know his departure time! Amend your ways and save yourself from destruction. The Messenger of Allaah said,

“Every one wakes up in the morning while there are among them those who are buying freedom for their selves and those who are enslaving or destroying their own selves”

(Muslim)

As for you who have been weakened by sins, and have wasted many years in pastime and slumber, shunned many sincere advice neglected many prayers, committed many sins and spread many evil. Have you forgotten the dying hour when it would be difficult for you to move your tongue and your hands and when your family and neighbours will be weeping? Have you forgotten what happens to the dying person when his soul is being pulled out, when his hardship becomes severe, his colour changes and his forehead perspires? Even the Prophet who is the most beloved to Allaah of all His slaves, when he was dying dipped his hand in water and wiped his face with that saying, “Laa ilaaha illa Allaah, death indeed, has agony.”(Al-Bukhaaree)

Fellow Muslims! Where are those whom we have lived with for a long time and loved? How many are our loved ones whom we have closed their eyes and buried! Has death had mercy on a sick relative of us because of his weakness? Has he spared a breadwinner for his children and dependants? Where are those who were with us in the past years? The spoiler of enjoyment and pleasures has taken them away from meeting places and mosques to the graves where they cannot avail themselves of any benefit or protect themselves from any harm. They are now expecting a day that they will be assembled in front of their Lord; a day in which people will be seized with violent fear, their eyes will shed hot tears, and their hearts will shiver because of the severity of reckoning!

O you who spend all his days and nights in heedlessness and sins, tell me; when are you going to repent? Are you delaying your repentance till the next year? You do not know when you will die. So, hasten to repent now and do not hesitate. Correct what has been damaged, expect your death and make use of your lifetime to provide for your Hereafter. Run away from the leper as you would from the lion, for your end is near and your life is a trust which you will account for on the Day of Resurrection. The Messenger of Allaah said,

“A slave will not be allowed to leave on the Day of Resurrection until he is asked of five things: of his life as to how he spent it; of his youth as to how he used it; of his wealth as to how he got it and how he spent it and of his knowledge as to how he made use of it.”

(At-Tirmidhee)

Ibn Masood said, “I have never regretted on anything more than my regret over the day which passed and in which my life is reduced and I do not have increase in good deeds.”

Brothers in Faith! Would you not grieve over the missed good deeds? Would you not weep over your misdeeds? Would you not prepare for the Day of Reckoning? Turn to your Lord in repentance before a day when you will be taken out of this world. Make good use of days and nights and let everyone of you call himself to account for the fortunate is the one who examines himself and rebukes his own soul for its shortcomings. Come unto an abode in which its inhabitants will never die and which never falls. The Messenger of Allaah said,

“Whoever enters Paradise will have everlasting enjoyment, his garments will never wear out and he will be in everlasting youthfulness.”

(Muslim)

Dear Muslim! Make up for what you have missed in your life, leave pastime aside, rise up in the middle of the night to pray and repent to your Lord sincerely. The Messenger of Allaah said,

“Allaah stretches out His Hand in the night, so that the sinner during the day may repent and stretches His Hand in the day in order that the sinner of the night may repent. So He does, until the sun rises from the west.”

(Muslim)

Make good use of the remaining part of your life, you will be forgiven and if you continue sinning, you will be held responsible for your past and present sins. Allaah says,

“O man! Verily, you are returning towards your Lord with your deeds and actions, a sure returning and you will meet (the results of your deeds). Then as for him who will be given his record in his right hand, he surely will receive an easy reckoning and will return to his family in joy! But whoever is given his record behind his back, he will invoke (for his) destruction and he shall enter a blazing fire and made to taste its burning. Verily, he was among his people in joy. Verily, he thought that he would never come back (to Us). Yes! Verily, his Lord has been ever beholding him.”

(Al-Inshiqaaq 84:6-15)

Brothers in Faith! Fear Allaah and be conscious of Him,

“O you who believe! Fear Allaah and be with those who are true (in words and deeds).”

(At-Tawbah 9:119)

Fellow Muslims! Days of this world will come to an end and bodies will become worn out. The fortunate is therefore, the one who lives long and acts righteously and the unfortunate is the one who lives long and acts unrighteously. A man asked the Prophet, “Who are the best of people?”

The Prophet replied, “He who lives long and does righteous deeds.”

He then asked, “Who are the worst people?”

He replied, “He who lives long but does evil deeds.”

(At-Tirmidhee)

Therefore, be among the seekers after the Hereafter and do not be among the seekers of this world, for today is for deeds and tomorrow is for reckoning only; and deeds are judged according to its ends. Man dies on what he lives on and he will be resurrected on what he dies on. The Prophet said, “Man will be resurrected on the act he used to do while he is alive.”

Fellow Muslims! The doors of repentance are now open. So hasten to a sincere repentance before death comes knocking.

“O you who believe! Turn to Allaah with sincere repentance.”

(At-Tahreem 66:8)

“And all of you beg Allaah to forgive you, O believers, that you may be successful.”

All praise is due to Allaah, Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings of Allaah be upon the Messenger, his household and companions.

Fellow Muslims! Fear Allaah and be conscious of Him.

“O mankind! Be dutiful to your Lord, Who created you from a single person (Adam), and from him (Adam) He created his wife (Hawwâ (Eve)) and from them both He created many men and women; and fear Allaah through Whom you demand (your mutual rights), and (do not cut the relations of) the wombs (kinship). Surely, Allaah is Ever an All-Watcher over you.”

(An-Nisaa 4:1)

Dear Muslims! Allaah, through His mercy and wisdom, created man on a nature that loves stability and comfort. He created a wife for him from his own kind that he might find succour with her and be inclined to her. Allaah says,

“And among His Signs is this, that He created for you wives from among yourselves, that you may find repose in them, and He has put between you affection and mercy. Verily, in that are indeed signs for a people who reflect.”

(Ar-Room 30:21)

Fellow Muslims! Marital tie is a great one. It is a tie that is established on mutual wish, choice and altruism. It is a tie that the religion of Islaam ordained and which the human nature requests. This is because, the family is the foundation of the society and security of the society depends of security of each of the families that make up the society.

The two pillars of the family are man and woman who are both brought together by love, affection, friendship, sincerity, compassion and agreement under one roof.

In the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of His Messenger, there is a perfect welfare and complete justice that strengthen the foundation of this blessed relationship and that prevent it from going sour.

Dear Muslims! The causes of many marital problems and astounding rise in divorce cases lie in the people’s ignorance of the Islaamic injunctions, etiquettes of marital life and demands of family responsibilities. For how can a family enjoy happiness and tranquillity if the husband uses disgusting and vile language and he is hot-tempered and repulsively selfish? How can the family enjoy peace if the husband is worthless, frowning, overbearing and oppressive to his wife? Where is the kindness that the Qur’aan enjoined?

Brethrens in faith! How can the family enjoy happiness and tranquillity if the wife always go out, is talkative, cursing, revolting, negligent, extravagant, lazy, ingrate and obstinate? The Messenger of Allaah said, “I was shown the Hell-Fire and I found out that most of its inhabitants are women.” The Prophet was asked: ‘Why O Messenger of Allaah?’ He said, “Because they are ungrateful to their husbands. If you have being kind to one of them for your whole life and she once finds something she does not like in you, she says: ‘I have never got any good thing from you.’”

O you husband and wife! Fear Allaah regarding your marital life. Fulfil your responsibility to one another. Follow the injunctions of the Qur’aan and the Sunnah and make use of the sound reason in your dealings with each other lest both of you become victims of divorce and regret. Follow the injunction of Allaah that says,

“And they (women) have rights (over their husbands as regards living expenses) similar (to those of their husbands) over them (as regards obedience and respect) to what is reasonable, but men have a degree (of responsibility) over them.”

(Al-Baqarah 2:228)

The Prophet said, “Certainly, you have rights over your wives as your wives also have rights over you.” (At-Tirmidhee)

Fellow Muslims! Whoever seeks for a life partner who is free from all defects is looking for something unachievable. The Messenger of Allaah said, “No believing man should hate his believing woman. If he finds some traits which he dislikes in her, he will find in her other traits which he likes.” He also said, “Any woman who asks her husband for divorce without valid excuse, she will never perceive the aroma of Paradise.”

Dear Muslim woman and wife! Be like the earth for your husband he will be like the heaven for you. Be like a resting place for him he will be like a pillar for you, be like a maid for him he will be like a servant for you. Take care of the time of his meals and maintain quietness during his sleeping periods, for the bitterness of hunger is burning and any disturbance during time of sleep is irritating.

Keep his company with satisfaction and relate to him with obedience. Do not ever reveal his secret and do not disobey him. Beware of the things that may make the life sour for him. Do not fast while he is at home without his consent and do not allow anybody to enter his house without his permission.

Know that the more you respect him the more he honours you. Do not keep far from him lest he forgets you and exert all efforts to please him. But you should do that in the light of the injunctions of Islaam. Whenever he requests his rights from you, give them to him. The Messenger of Allaah said, “If a man invites his wife to bed and she refuses and the man passes the night being angry with her, the Angels will curse her until the she wakes up in the morning.” (Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim)

Serve him willingly and satisfactorily, for that strengthens mutual love and affection. It is enough for a Muslim woman as a blessing and good tiding that the Messenger of Allaah said, “Any woman who dies while her husband is pleased with her will enter Paradise.” (Ibn Hibbaan)

Dear brother who is the husband! Fear Allaah regarding your wife. Do not burden her with what is beyond her capability. Always assist her in difficulty and be compassionate with her if she is tired or if she falls sick. Always be considerate whenever she is pregnant, she is in post-natal period or she is breastfeeding. Thank her much and appreciate her gratitude. Know that your authority over your wife does not in any way mean that you are free to oppress her or treat her with contempt. It means that you should preserve her honour, teach her, educate her and keep her chaste. Do not let your major concern be monitoring her mistakes and do never treat her suspiciously.

However, do not overlook things that might contravene religious or moral values. The Prophet said, “There are two types of jealousy. Allaah loves one and hates the other. Allaah loves sense of jealousy in a suspicious situation and hates sense of jealousy in other situations.” (Ahmad)

O you husband! Beware of much nagging for it generate hatred. Do not deny your wife and children your kindness lest they become fed up with you and wish for your early death. The Prophet said, “It is enough a sin for a man to neglect those he ought to provide with sustenance.” (Aboo Daawood)

Be always generous and kind, for generosity is a quality of good leadership. There is no good in extravagance as there is no extravagance in kindness. Allaah says,

“Lodge them (the divorced women) where you dwell, according to your means, and do not harm them so as to straiten them (that they be obliged to leave you house). And if they are pregnant, then spend on them till they lay down their burden. Then if they give suck to the children for you, give them their due payment, and let each of you accept the advice of the other in a just way. But if you make difficulties for one another, then some other woman may give suck for him (the father of the child). Let the rich man spend according to his means; and the man whose resources are restricted, let him spend according to what Allaah has given him. Allaah puts no burden on any person beyond what He has given him. Allaah will grant after hardship, ease.” (At-Talaaq 65:6-7)

The Messenger of Allaah said, “Fear Allaah regarding your wives, for you married them under the trust of Allaah and they became lawful for you with the word of Allaah. And you owe them their provision and shelter according to what is reasonable.” The Prophet also said, “When a man spends something on his family, it is will be recorded for him as a charity.” (Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim)

Fellow Muslims! Prophet Muhammad, blessings and peace be upon him, who is the leader of mankind used to treat his family with kindness. He would laugh with them and share light moods with them. He used to say, “The most perfect of the believers in faith is the best of them in conduct. And the best of you is the kindest in the treatment of his family.”

O husbands! Do not exceed the limits set by Islaam while spanking your wives. Beware of inflicting bodily harm on them for doing so has horrible consequences. The Messenger of Allaah said, “None of you should flog his wife as he would do his slave and then sleep with her at the end of the day.”

Dear brethren! Some men exceeded the limit of punishing their wives during the time of the Messenger of Allaah. These women came to the wives of the Prophet to complain about their husbands’ battering. The Prophet then addressed the people saying, “Many women have come to the wives of Muhammad complaining of their husbands’ battering. Those husbands are not among your good men.” (Aboo Daawood)

O you husbands! Spending night hours outside the home causes distress for the wife and makes her life unbearable. It threatens the stability of your homes and exposes your children to negligence and temptations of this age.

Brethren in faith! The appearance of sins and religious violations in many homes is the major cause of their disintegration. Dissentions and mutual suspicion have prevailed in many homes as a result of the satellite programs that many families watch. Allaah says,

“Allaah wronged them not, but they wronged themselves.”

(Aal ‘Imraan 3:117)

Fear Allaah and cleanse your homes from things that may bring upon you curse and expulsion from the mercy of your Lord. Allaah says,

“Say: ‘Verily, Allaah sends astray whom He wills and guides unto Himself those who turn to Him in repentance.’”
(Ar-Ra‘d 13:27)

Fellow Muslims! Let the Muslim woman who is the nurturer of coming generations demonstrate tenderness, compassion and intelligent in carrying out her duties; and let the man who is in charge demonstrate resoluteness, valour, sound reason and deliberateness in discharging his duties. Let both of them live a honourable life under the shade of Islaam by adhering to the injunctions of Allaah and His Messenger and cooperating in righteousness and piety. The Prophet said, “May Allaah bless a man who wakes up in the night, observes voluntary prayers and then awakens his wife and she also observes voluntary prayers. If she refuses to wake up, he sprinkles water on her face. May Allaah bless a woman who wakes up in the night, performs voluntary prayers and then awakens her husband and he also performs supererogatory prayers. When he refuses to wake up, she sprinkles water on his face.”

Allaah says, “And those who believe and whose offspring follow them in Faith: to them shall We join their offspring, and We shall not decrease the reward of their deeds in anything. Every person is a pledge for that which he has earned.”

(At-Toor 52:21)

Brothers in Islaam! Fairness brings about familiarity and obedience. It is through fairness and justice that love renewed. The unjust person will have no neighbour.

O you men with more than one wife! Deal justly among your wives as regards housing, clothing, feeding, expenses and nights sharing. Beware of unfairness, for it causes punishment from Allaah. The Prophet said, “When a man has two wives and he is inclined to one of them, he will come on the Day of resurrection with a side hanging down.” (Ahmad)

A manifestation of the Prophet’s equal treatment of his wives is that whenever he wanted to travel, he would draw a ballot among his wives and would take along any of them whose ballot prevailed. Whenever he divided something equally among his wives, he would say, “O Allah, this is my division concerning what I possess, so do not blame me concerning what You possess and I do not.” (Aboo Daawood)

Treat your wives equally and take into consideration the jealousy that they cannot naturally prevent. An example of the women’s jealousy is what was narrated by ‘Aaishah who said, “I have never seen anyone who cooked better than Safiyyah. She presented a bowl of food to the Messenger of Allaah. I was overwhelmed by jealousy so much so that I broke the bowl. I told the Messenger of Allaah, ‘What is the atonement for what I had done?’ He said, “The similar bowl and the similar food.” (Ahmad)

‘Aaishah also said, “The envious woman (who is under the spell of envy) cannot tell the bottom of the valley from its top.”

Dear brothers! Demonstrate wisdom and deliberateness in your dealings with one another. Beware of evil company and evil deeds,

“And all of you beg Allaah to forgive you all, O believers, that you may be successful.”

Blocking the Ways to Evil

All praise is due to Allaah, Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon the Messenger, his household and companions.

Fellow Muslims! Fear Allaah from Whom nothing is hidden. Hidden things are to Him as clear as open things.

He is with you (by His Knowledge) wherever you may be. And Allaah is the All-Seer of what you do.

(Al-Hadeed 57:4)

Dear brethren! The religion of Islaam has principles. The Muslims’ safety from pitfalls depends on the level of their understanding of these principles and their safety from problems depends on how they abide by these principles.

One of the recognized principles of this religion is consideration of the consequences of actions. It is through studying what an action can result to that its rule is known and its deion is made easy. Something can be primarily lawful and yet prohibited because of its evil results. Every act that leads to an unlawful thing is also unlawful. If a means is primarily meant for achieving lawful things but it is used to achieve an unlawful thing, that means then becomes unlawful. Also, if something is in itself lawful but mostly used to achieve unlawful things, it then becomes unlawful.

Anyone who audaciously ventures into giving fatwas without the knowledge of this important principle has committed a grave error and given strange and odd counseling.

If one has a perusal of Islaamic jurisprudence, one will find out that this principle is given consideration and that great rules are based upon it. The utmost goal of Sharee’ah is to prevent all that could undermine the principles and laws of Islaam and all that could open the gates of evils, corruptions and decadence even if that thing is originally lawful.

Therefore, the rejecter of this principle should also reject all other restrictions put in place to regulate people’s worldly affairs and without which there would have been incontrollable anarchy and misery, though these restrictions are based upon restraining what is primarily lawful and preventing what is originally legally permissible.

Fellow Muslims! The Islaamic law is based upon judiciousness and guarding against what can lead to temptation, degeneration and corruption. Allaah says,

And insult not those whom they (disbelievers) worship besides Allaah, lest they insult Allaah wrongfully without knowledge.

(Al-An‘aam 6:108)

In the above verse, Allaah prohibits insulting the polytheists’ deities though doing so is originally permissible. But since doing so could cause the polytheists to insult the only True Lord Who is the Provider for all the worlds, then insulting their deities becomes prohibited. It can then be understood here that a permissible thing can be prohibited if doing it can lead to bringing harm upon the religion.

One day, a Bedouin Arab urinated in a corner of the mosque. The people rose up against him but the Messenger of Allaah held them back and said, “Do not interrupt his urination (i.e. let him finish).” When he finished his urination, the Prophet asked for a tumbler of water and ordered that it be poured over the place of urine

(Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim)

In the above hadeeth, the Messenger of Allaah prevented his companions from doing what is permissible because of a more preponderant benefit which is prevention of the greater evil by opting for the lesser one and attainment of the greater benefit by abandoning the lesser one.

In another incidence, the Messenger of Allaah refused ‘Umar’s request he be allowed to kill Abdullaah ibn Ubayy, the leader of the hypocrites whose hypocrisy had then became manifest. He justified his refusal with his saying, “I do not want people to say that Muhammad is killing his companions.” he also refused to rebuilt the Ka’bah upon the pillars of Ibraaheem and told ‘Aaishah, “If your people had not been recent converts to Islaam, I would have spent the treasure of the Ka'bah in the way of Allaah and would have constructed its door just on the level of the ground and would have encompassed in it the space of Hijr.” (Muslim)

The fasting Muslim is prohibited from hugging his wife if he fears that doing so could lead to vitiation of his fast. At-Tirmidhee said, “Some scholars are of the view that the fasting Muslim can kiss his wife if he is able to control himself.”

Likewise, Islaam ordains that a Muslim can only has bodily contact with his menstruating wife when her private parts are covered because if a fear that if those parts are not covered, contacting her may lead to doing what is forbidden. All this is done on the principle of “blocking means that lead to forbidden things and considering the end results of actions”.

One of the proofs of this principle is Allaah’s command,

And let them not stamp their feet so as to reveal what they hide of their adornment.

(An-Nur 24:31)

Allaah commands women not to stamp their feet, though doing so is in itself lawful, so that men would not hear what could arouse their passion.

Islaam also forbids woman from wearing perfume when she is going to the mosque – in spite of the fact that wearing perfume is in itself permissible – so that she would not attract men’s attention.

The woman is commanded to stand behind men in prayers and not to say subhaanallaah when there is a mistake but should only strike one of her hands on the back of the other. All this is ordained so that doors to evil can be blocked.

Therefore, any action that aims at corrupting woman, making her escape from her guardian’s supervision or exposing her to evil-doers and dangers should be regarded as unlawful though that action may, in itself, be permissible. This is because it is forbidden in view of the evil that doing it can lead to.

Dear brethren! If a forbidden thing cannot be avoided except by abandoning something, that thing also becomes forbidden. The rules that apply to forbidden things also apply to means that lead to them. So regarding means that lead to forbidden things as lawful is tantamount to contradicting the forbiddance and streamlining the rules of Sharee’ah.

The treacherous and perfidious people often exploit matters on which there is no explicit text on their forbiddance, though it is definitely known that these matters lead to great sins and corruptions. They use lack of explicit text of forbiddance to spread means that leads to forbidden things.

Muhammad ibn al-Hasan said, “It is not of the characters of the Muslims to seek to escape from Allaah’s injunctions through subterfuge means that lead to abolition of truth. The Messenger of Allaah said, “Do not perpetrate what the Jews perpetrated by using subterfuge means to turn what Allaah forbade into lawful things.” (Ibn Battah)

Dear Muslims! If the law of Islaam forbids some permissible things that can lead to forbidden things, what then would one say about those who take the path of misinterpretation to repudiate the texts of the Qur’aan and the Sunnah, seek to cast doubt on their meanings through false arguments and tricky means in order to make forbidden thing lawful and encourage the masses to disobey Allaah and weaken the Ummah’s sense of adherence to the religion of Allaah.

Dear brethren! The greatest calamity is what afflicted the majority of the Muslims where they audaciously talk about the lawful and unlawful with their mere opinions thereby turning issues of Islaamic jurisprudence into a grazing ground for every Tom, Dick and Harry and deciding that the view of the majority on these issues is the most correct. This is tantamount to telling lies against Allaah, committing offense against the scholars and being insolent with the Ummah. This is a burning evil, a great calamity and a path of destruction.

Al-Qaasim said, “By Allaah, to have my tongue cut off is dearer to me than to talk on what I know nothing about.”

Imaam Maalik said, “The Companions of the Prophet used to be greatly inconvenienced by issues of Islaamic jurisprudence, and none of them would answer a question until he had got the opinion of his companions. This is in spite of their appropriateness, success and purity.” What would one then say about our generation whose hearts are filled with sins?

Dear Muslims! In this age, there are many tricksters in the garb of reformers, many hypocrites in the garb of sincere advisers and charlatans in the garb of the zealous followers. These swindlers use sweet words to lure the simpletons and the ignorant into their snares and they argue with falsehood against the manifest truth. It is incumbent upon the Muslims to be careful of the people of malicious intentions and misleading desires who use falsehood and deception.

If there is a matter of ambiguity, the Muslims should consult the erudite scholars and Muftis. For, going back to them is the path of security against falling into the trap of mischief-makers and charlatans.

It is the scholars who have better knowledge of comparison between things. It is they who have clearer understanding of ambiguous things. Turning away from their judgment is a recipe for destruction, and adhering to their teachings is the way to success. ‘Abdullaah ibn Mas’ood said, “The people shall remain in righteousness and harmony as long as they take their knowledge from Muhammad’s Companions and from their own elders. But if they take their knowledge from their young and inexperienced ones they are bound to perish.”

May Allaah protect us from causes of perdition, protect us and make us steadfast upon His religion us until death.

Fellow Muslims! Fear Allaah and be dutiful to Him. Allaah says,

O you who believe! Be afraid of Allaah, and be with those who are true (in words and deeds).

(At-Tawbah 9:119)

Dear Muslims! Taking precaution against what can lead to horrible consequences is the habit of the righteous servants of Allaah.

Al-Hasan said, “The righteous were so pious that they even abandon many things that are lawful out of fear of forbidden things.”

The Messenger of Allaah said, “Both legal and illegal things are evident but in between them there are doubtful (suspicious) things and most of the people have no knowledge about them. So whoever saves himself from these suspicious things saves his religion and his honour. And whoever indulges in these suspicious things is like a shepherd who grazes (his animals) near the Hima (private pasture) of someone else and at any moment he is liable to get in it. (O people!) Beware! Every king has a Hima and the Hima of Allaah on the earth is His illegal (forbidden) things.” (Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim)

And whoever embarks upon that which is ambiguous might eventually fall into what is sinful. The wise is not the one who only knows what is good and what is evil but the one who can identify the better of the two good things and the worse of the two evils.

A poet was right when he said:

The wise is the one who when afflicted with two diseases, he seeks the cure of the more dangerous first.

The Disease of Late Nights

First Khutbah

O Muslims! The favours of Allaah upon His slaves cannot be enumerated. Among these favours is that He has created sleep, and He has created the night so that we may rest in it. Allaah, the Bestower of Favours, says that which translates as: “And [We] made your sleep [a means for] rest, And made the night as clothing.” (An-Naba’: 9-10) And also: “[He is] the cleaver of daybreak and has made the night for rest and the sun and moon for calculation. That is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing.” (Al-An’aam: 96) During the night, people are calm and their bodies and minds are relaxed, which results in the required rest. Allaah created this time for people to unwind, calm down and rest in, and this is from His mercy. Allaah says that which translates as: “And out of His mercy He made for you the night and day that you may rest therein and [by day] seek from His bounty and [that] perhaps you will be grateful.” (Al-Qasas: 73).

O Muslims! In the past, the nights were a field of competition and hard work; during them one would only see people praying, crying, supplicating or reciting the Qur’aan. Our Salaf, may Allaah have mercy upon them, used to view the nights as the best means that lead one to Paradise. However, the Muslims of today take their nights as a means of entertainment and frivolity. Satan dispatches his followers and spreads his evil ideas, and this has led to late nights being a source of immorality, corrupt behaviour, and a path that leads to ones destruction, as well as a period in which the evilest of prohibited television programs are broadcast.

Late nights ruin the bodies; they enter upon us as a terrifying intruding stranger and are a shelter for every sinful and sick-hearted person. They are the source of all evil and any objective person will testify to this. They earn the wrath of Allaah and His punishment and cause the hearts to become sick as well as encouraging wrong doing.

All of these evils are a direct result of the Muslim nation feeding in western ideology and its associated lifestyle. The Muslims have fed from the fruits of this bitter tree (i.e., the western ideology) which promotes a lifestyle which is by its nature far away from the religion of Allaah and rebellious against all spiritual morals. It encourages the following of ones lusts and desires, just like as animals do. This is nothing but poison which the disbelieving and evil ideas of secularism have fed us. It is mandatory upon the Muslims from all walks of life, and especially the leaders and those in authority, to protect the younger generation from this destructive volcano of secularism which destroys everything that it comes across.

O Muslims! During vacations and holidays, late nights become a serious problem which is widespread, and most people who practice this habit forego sleep and all other important activities in their lives and immerse themselves in wrongdoing and sinful acts. They seem to forget that the days of summer are temporary, just like a guest, and that these days and nights will quickly come to an end.

Successful are those who ponder upon the heat of summer and the hot water it produces and reflect thereby on the Hereafter and the Hellfire. This is a preventive remembrance which would stop them from spending their nights sinfully; wasting time by indulging in prohibitions; and killing hours whilst partaking in immorality and corruption - which destroys families and the next generation. Glad tidings are due for the slaves who restrain themselves from straying, and spend their time beneficially in matters such as, Qur’aan circles, lectures, courses, developing their mental abilities and permitted wholesome entertainment which is free from any prohibitions.

Staying up until the last hours of the night and resisting sleep when the body is in desperate need of it, or consuming prohibited medication that keeps one awake, results in serious problems such as health diseases, psychological disturbances, bad tempers and loss of enthusiasm; one would thereby become physically weak, lazy and apathetic to the extent that one can no longer shoulder any responsibilities nor fulfil any duties which one has during the day, because staying up late is tiring and burdensome. Thawbaan, may Allaah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophetsallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallamsaid: “Staying up late is tiring and burdensome.” (Daarimi, Tabaraani and others). A person may resist sleep to stay up for an extra hour and lose as a result many hours if not days.

Slaves of Allaah! Staying up late is a major reason behind many of the moral crimes, community problems, car accidents and instability in national security that currently exists.

O Muslims! Let us look at the household of the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam to see the Prophetic methodology and guidance, so that we can follow in his footsteps and protect ourselves with his Sunnah from the finely decorated evil of Satan and the sweet words of the corrupt. ‘Aa’ishah, may Allaah be pleased with her, said: "The Prophetsallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, never slept before the ‘Ishaa’ prayer and never stayed up after it." (Ibn Maajah) And when she heard ‘Urwah, may Allaah be pleased with him, talking after the ‘Ishaa’ prayer she remarked: "What is this talk after dark? I have never seen the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam sleeping before this prayer or talking after it. He was either praying and gaining (reward) or sleeping and saved (from evil)" (Abdur-Razzaaq). Al-Aswad, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "I asked ‘Aa’ishah, how was the (night) prayer of the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam?" She, may Allaah be pleased with her, replied: "He slept for the first part of the night and prayed at the end of it." (Bukhaari & Muslim).

O Muslims! Sleeping in the first part of the night has many benefits. Those who follow the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam in doing this find that their body has been properly rested. Abdullaah Ibn ‘Abbaas, may Allaah be pleased with him, said: "Once I spent the night at the house of my aunt Maymoonah, the wife of the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam. I put my head on a pillow while laying down sideways while the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam and his wife lay down lengthways. The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam slept until midnight, or just before or right after it. Then he woke up and wiped the sleep from his face by rubbing his face with his hands and then he recited the last ten verses from Soorah Aal ‘Imraan. Then he performed a perfect Wudhoo’ and stood up for prayer." (Bukhaari & Muslim). This is how his night was, but where are those who imitate him?

O Muslims! You have two angels accompanying you all your lives and they record all the deeds that you perform. ‘Urwah, may Allaah be pleased with him, said "I was talking once after the ‘Ishaa’ prayer and ‘Aaishah heard me, so she said: 'Why don’t you give your record keepers a rest? The Prophet never slept before this prayer nor did he stay up after it’" (Ibn Hibbaan). Imaam Maalik, may Allaah have mercy upon him, reported that ‘Aa’ishah, may Allaah be pleased with her, used to send some of her family members after ‘Ishaa’ prayer to say to the people: "Why don't you give your record keepers a rest?" Az-Zarqaani, may Allaah have mercy upon him, reported that Abu ‘Abdul Malik, may Allaah have mercy upon him, commented on this by saying: "She meant the one who records evil deeds, and if people refrain from evil then he will rest and not record anything, and this was because of the hatred that she had for the evil that people did."

The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, dispraised staying up late and warned against it as Ibn Mas’ood, may Allaah be pleased with him, said: "The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, used to dispraise and warn against staying up after ‘Ishaa" (Ahmad).

The Prophetsallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallamsaid: “Beware of staying up after people’s movements settle” and in another narration: “Beware of staying up after the night has settled, because you do not know what spreads out on the earth from the creatures of Allaah” (Al-Haakim). Abu Barzah Al-Aslami, may Allaah be pleased with him, said: "The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam used to like to delay the ‘Ishaa’ prayer and he hated to sleep before it or talk after it". Imaam Ibn Hajar, may Allaah have mercy upon him, commented on this by saying: "This is because sleeping before it might make a person pray it after its due time, and staying up late might cause one to miss the Fajr prayer, or make a person miss out on the (optional) night prayer. ‘Umar, may Allaah be pleased with him, used to punish people the people who did this and say: 'You stay up for the first part of the night, then sleep for the last part of it?’". Ibn Hajar, may Allaah have mercy upon him, continued by saying: "Some people may differentiate between the seasons where the nights are long and those whose nights are short, but in order to settle this issue, we must realise that the advice of the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam was general and applicable at all times". Imaam An-Nawawi, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "The scholars have agreed that staying up after ‘Ishaa’ is dispraised, unless it is for the purpose of doing something (religiously) beneficial".

The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam did stay up late on some occasions in order to fulfil some needs or accomplish some tasks for the benefit of the Muslims, as ‘Umar, may Allaah be pleased with him, said: "The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam and I used to stay up late at night at the house of Abu Bakr, may Allaah be pleased with him, discussing the affairs of the Muslims." (Ahmad & Tirmidhi). Ibn Mas’ood, may Allaah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophetsallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallamsaid: “Staying up late is permitted for one of two categories of people; either those travelling, or those praying.” (Ahmad). ‘Aa’ishah, may Allaah be pleased with her, narrated that the Prophetsallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallamsaid: “Staying up late is for one of three categories of people; those travelling, those praying the night prayers, or those on their wedding night.” (Abu Ya’laa). Imaam Bukhaari, may Allaah have mercy upon him, gave the title of one of the chapters on his famous book as: "Staying up late with the wife, the guest, for learning or being benevolent".

Therefore, the summary of the ruling regarding staying up late is that staying up after the ‘Ishaa’ prayer is dispraised unless it is due to necessity or for a religiously beneficial purpose. If it is the case that staying up late results in abandoning or missing out on an obligatory act of worship then it becomes prohibited, even if the reason for staying up was to perform a religiously beneficial deed or act in obedience to Allaah; anything that leads one to commit a prohibition is itself prohibited. As a consequence, we know that staying up late doing religiously beneficial acts is praised only if none of the above mentioned prohibitions take place.

O Muslims! Many people slight the prohibited type of staying up late, which leads many of them to miss their Fajr prayer, and this has become such a chronic problem that those who attend this prayer in congregation are very few in number. This phenomenon has became very natural, so much so that people do not feel any resentment towards it, despite the fact that the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said: “The most burdensome prayers for a hypocrite are ‘Ishaa’ and Fajr, and if only they (i.e., the hypocrites) knew what virtues they have, then they would have attended them, even if they would have had to crawl to the mosque.” (Bukhaari & Muslim). Ibn Mas’ood, may Allaah be pleased with him, said: "Only a known hypocrite would miss out on these two prayers." (Muslim).

Slaves of Allaah! Fear Allaah and do not practice such a dispraised deed which has very evil consequences. If you have forgotten or become absent minded, then remember that Allaah says that which translates as: “…And if Satan should cause you to forget, then do not remain after the reminder with the wrongdoing people.” (Al-An’aam: 68). Beware that the nights of your life will pass you by whilst you are heedless and becoming more and more astray. Know that during every second of your life, your every word, thought and deed are recorded and exposed to Allaah; nothing can be concealed from Him. Just ponder over the saying of Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam: “Any People who sit in a gathering during which they do not mention the name of Allaah, it will be as if they ate from a dead donkey, and they will bitterly regret it.” (Abu Daawood) The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, also said: “Any People who sit in a gathering during which they do not mention the name of Allaah nor exalt the mention of His Prophet will regret it, then it is up to Allaah to punish them for it or forgive them.” (Ahmad).

O Muslims! The time that precedes dawn is the time for supplicating and seeking forgiveness and repentance, as the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said: “Our Lord descends (in a way which befits His Majesty) every night to the heavens when there is only one third of the night remaining and says: Who is supplicating to me so that I can respond to him? Who is asking Me for something so that I can grant him that which he is asking for? Who is seeking My forgiveness so that I can forgive him” (Bukhaari & Muslim) and the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, also said: “The closest Allaah is to His slave is during the last part of the night, so if you can be amongst those who mention Allaahs name during this time, then do so.” (Tirmidhi).

O Muslims! Is it befitting to a Muslim to spend these honourable and virtuous times with music and lusts?

O fathers and guardians! You are commanded to prevent your children from going out whenever darkness falls, as the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, said: “Prevent your children from going outside after dark, because this is the time during which Satan emerges.” (Al-Haakim) The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, also said: “When it is getting dark then prevent your children from going outside, because the devils spread out at that time. After this time, you may set them (i.e., your children) loose.” (Bukhaari & Muslim) In addition to this, the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, also said: “Do not allow your children to go outside from sunset until it becomes dark, because devils are sent from the time the sun sets until darkness falls.”in another narration: “Because Jinns spread out and possess people.”

O Muslims! If it is a must that children are prevented from going outside due to devils being widespread during this time, then we must also know that the devils from amongst mankind also spread themselves out throughout the night, aiming to attract and corrupt our youth, and the temptations are countless, which necessitates that we be alert and cautious, for only he who is cautious will survive. Protect your children from becoming misguided and lost due to the fact that they are young and easily tempted inexperienced in life; be trustworthy guardians, faithful, wise and alert. Do not be negligent because that this is harmful and yields bitter results. Allaah says that which translates as: “Indeed this is a reminder, so whoever wills may take to his Lord a way.” (Al-Muzzammil: 19).

Second Khutbah

O Muslims! Something which breaks ones heart due to sorrow and pain is that fact that many people have transgressed the boundaries of what is lawful and unlawful during weddings. They are not satisfied by what Allaah has legislated and made permissible, such as announcing the wedding in order to differentiate between it and an illicit relationship, or allowing women only to beat tambourines and sing songs which are not immoral. They have transgressed these boundaries to the extent that people stay up all night uselessly during wedding parties; they hire male and female singers to sing lustful songs and use musical instruments; they spend excessively; they harm others by loud music and unnecessary noise; they compete with each other in an evil manner by paying very high prices for wedding dresses; the women appear uncovered or covered but with tight see-through dresses, which leaves the body almost nude; the dancers in such gatherings behave like prostitutes and disbelievers; and there is free mixing between men and women; All these are disgraceful practices which has transferred to the Muslim masses from the west by blind imitation.

Slaves of Allaah! Fear Allaah and refrain from what you were prohibited to do. Adhere to that which your Salaf did; make up for what has passed by weeping over your sins which you have repented for and Allaah will change your sins into rewards and forgive you.

The Islamic Stand on Music

Sheikh Salaah Al-Budayr

Rabee’uth-Thaanee 8, 1422 (June 29, 2001)

All praise is due to Allah. I testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, He is One and has no partner. I equally testify that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. May peace and blessings be upon him, his household and companions.

“O You who believe. Keep your duty to Allah and fear Him and speak (Always) the truth.”

(Al-Ahzaab 33: 70)

Our prophet Muhammad told us about these people when he said, “There will be some people among my nation who will regard fornication, wearing of silk (for men), drinking of intoxicants and stringed instruments as lawful.” (Al-Bukhaaree and others)

Jaabir narrated that the Prophet said, “I did not forbid you from weeping. I have only forbidden you from making two foolish and horrible noises: a noise when playing and using the instrument of Satan and a noise when you are afflicted with a calamity and you beat your faces, tear your garments and make a satanic wailing.” (Al-Haakim)

Anas narrated that the prophet said, “Two sounds are accursed in this world and the hereafter: (the sound of) musical instruments in time of happiness and wailing during calamity.” (Al-Bazaar)

For such there will be humiliating torment (in the Hell-fire).”

(Luqmaan 31: 6)

The Prophet said while commenting on this verse, “It is not permissible to sell singing girls nor to buy them, nor to trade in them. Their price is haraam. This verse was revealed regarding that.” (At-Tabaraanee)

Abdullah ibn Mas’ood also commented on this verse when he said, “By Him beside whom no deity is worthy of worship! That (verse refers to) music,”

But Satan promises them nothing but deceit.”

(Al-Israa’ 17: 64)

Fellow Muslims! Shun music and its instruments for it leads to promiscuity. It is also the trap of Satan by which he lures men to immoral acts. Zayd ibn Al-Waleed said, “O Omayyads! Keep away from music for it reduces modesty, increases lust and destroys man. It acts in the same way as alcohol and one who is under its influence acts like one who is drunk.” Umar ibn Abdul-Azeez wrote to his sons’ tutor: “Let your first lesson for them be the hatred of musical instruments that come from Satan and end with the wrath of Allah; for it reached me from trustworthy sources that attending a place where music and its instruments are played grows hypocrisy in the heart as water makes plants grow.” He also wrote a letter to Umar ibn Al-Waleed part of which goes thus, “And your introduction of musical instruments and flutes is an innovation in Islam and I have decided to send to you those who will chop off that evil head of yours.”

Brothers in faith! Beware of things that lead to Allah’s wrath. Appearance of music and stringed instruments is a cause of Allah’s wrath and His chastisement. Aboo Maalik Al-Ash’aree narrated that the Messenger of Allah said, “There will be a group of people among my nation who will drink alcohol calling it by other names and upon their heads stringed instruments will be played and in their presence songstresses will sing, Allah will cause the earth to swallow them and He will turn them into monkeys and pigs.”

‘Imraan narrated that the Messenger of Allah said, “In this nation there will be humiliation, corruption and slander. The companions asked, “When will that happen O Messenger of Allah?” He said, “When songstresses and stringed instruments appear and when alcohol is consumed.” (At-Tirmidhee)

When Maalik ibn Anas was asked about what some men in his time regarded as permissible music, he answered, “It is only the sinful people who do that here.”

Fellow Muslims! Listening to music is one of the greatest traps of Satan that he sets to divert people’s attention from the Qur’an. Ash-Shaafiee said, “I left behind in Baghdad something that heretics introduced which they called Taghbeer with which they distract people from the Qur’an.”

Aboo Hurayrah narrated that the Prophet said, “The fornication of the tongue is uttering immoral utterances, fornication of the hands is touching and fornication of the feet is walking (unto what is forbidden). The heart desires and wishes but it is the private parts that confirms or denies them.”

(Muslim)

Fellow Muslims! Extolling music and stringed instruments and regarding musicians as leaders of society means calling people unto error and driving them away from the book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet. The Prophet said, “Whoever calls unto an error will have the sin equal to that of those who follow him without deducting anything of their own sins.” (Muslim)

“And if they pass by some evil play or evil talk, they pass it by with dignity.”

(Al-Furqaan 25: 72)

Fellow Muslims! Fear Allah and be conscious of Him and obey Him.” O you who believe! Fear Allah and be among the truthful.”

Brothers in faith! Allah allows the beating of tambourines in marriage ceremonies along with songs that contain no description of women or any other immoral message. That is in order to make the marriage publicised and distinguish between lawful and unlawful marriages. The Prophet said, “The difference between the lawful and unlawful marriage is the beating of the tambourine and the proclamation of the marriage.”

In Saheeh Al-Bukharee, Rubayyia bint Mu’awiyyah said – after her marriage had been consummated – “Some girls were beating a tambourine and praising those of their fathers who had been killed during the Battle of Badr.” Ibn Hajar said, “In the sound hadeeths there is permission for women to do that exclusively. Men should not join with them in that because of the general ruling that forbids men from imitating women.”

Al-Imaam Al-Awzaa’ee said, “Do not attend a marriage ceremony in which there is drum beating and stringed instruments.”

Fellow Muslims! Repent and turn back to Allah. Adhere to the manners of your religion, reform yourselves and hold fast unto the Book of your Lord and the Sunnah of your Prophet and you will prosper and succeed.”

Assalamu Alaykum Warahmatullahi Wabarakaatuh,

Death
Sheikh Salaah bin Muhammad al Budayr Imaam WaKhateeb Al Masjid An Nabawi
February 15, 2008 ~ Safar 8, 1429

All praise is due to Allah, the Magnificent, the Exalted. I praise Him for the favors and grace He has bestowed upon us. I bear witness that there is no God except Allah alone without any partners. He is glorified and well above being compared with anyone or anything. He is greater than any attribute of creation which will ultimately come to an end. I also bear witness that our Prophet and Leader Muhammad (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) is His servant and messenger, and the one who has been characterized by the best and most honored of traits and attributes. May the Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him, his family, and companions, the most best of companions and most honored family.

Oh Muslims, fear Allah, the Almighty, and give thanks to Allah for the favors and graces He has bestowed upon you all your life. Lessen your hopes in this life, and prepare yourselves for a sudden death, since there is no servant who has far-reaching hope except that it ends in sinful deeds. Allah says: "O you who believe! Fear Allâh and keep your duty to Him. And let every person look to what he has sent forth for the morrow, and fear Allâh. Verily, Allâh is All-Aware of what you do." [Surah Hashr: Ayah 18]

Oh Muslims, you are in a place which is not meant to last forever, even if your life is lengthy. This life is a bridge for those who will cross it. It is a lesson for those who reflect and take examples and lessons from it. The life of this world is only the enjoyment of deception and deceiving things. This is a life that leads to death. When you look at the crowds of people, you see nothing but dispersion, and you only hear that so-and-so is ill or that so-and-so has died. Death is evident at all times, and we are neglectful of what will happen to us sometime in the future.

Oh you who is made for death and yet goes astray. Oh you who has listened to admontions giving you guidance and advice. Oh you who have indulged in awful sins, won't you stop, regret, and cry, and open your eyes to see goodness, and walk towards guidance so as to find the true goal into attaining true happiness. If you send and refuse and abandon and turn from the guidance, you will be surprised by your sudden death, and you will be told of your deeds. On the Day of Judgement, you will know who you disobeyed and you will cry tears of blood when remembering your deeds and the pursuits you followed in your life. Allah says "...On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance (then) avail him?" [Surah Fajr: Ayah 23]

Oh you who commit prohibited acts, stop! Oh you who commit sins, are you not ashamed and embarrassed? Oh you who oppose your Lord by commiting sins, slow down. Oh you who give yourself full freedom to do whatever you want and follow all that you desire, Allah the King, and His angels are a witness. Allah says: "Not a word does he (or she) utter, but there is a watcher by him ready (to record it)." [Surah Qaaf: Ayah 18] Oh you whose heart is busy thinking about this and that girl. Oh you who is enjoying himself. Is there a covering over your heart? How much humiliation and disgrace in you? Oh you who has been disabled by deprivation. Oh you who has responded to sin, how many doors did you close in your pursuit of sin? How many times did you turn away from people who tried to advice you? How many prayers did you neglect? How many sinful looks did you have? How many people's rights have you taken? How many night clubs and places of sinful activity have you approached? How much evil have you spread?

Did you forget the time of your last breath, death; when the tongue becomes heavy, when the hands are loosened, and when the eyes gaze, and family and neighbords cry over you. Did you forget what happens to an individual at the time of his death, when his soul is pulled out, the hardships he experiences is severe. His moaning can be heard from afar, his color changes, his forehead sweats, and his right and left hands hit together against each other. The Messenger of Allah (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam), and there is nobody more favorable to Allah than his messenger, when it was his time to die, he had a small pot with water in it next to him. He put his hand into the water and wiped his face with it and said "None has the right to be worshipped except Allah. Death has its agonies." [Saheeh Bukhari]

Where are the ones who we lived with for a long time, and then we forgot? Where are the ones whom we loved and treated with kindness? How many eyelids of our loved ones did we close in death? How many dear ones have we buried? How many close ones did we put into the grave, and yet we remain standing. Did death have mercy on anyone when they were sick or in a weak state? Did death leave money for the sake of his children? Did death give more time to a family man for the sake of his children? Where are those who were with us in the past days and years? There came to them the destroyer of joys, the stopper of desires, the divider of groups. Death made the masajid and places empty. You find them in the middle of graves, not down, not being able to remove the status they are in. And they cannot bring to themselves any benefit or harm. They await a day when nations will be called to their Lord, and all creation will be gathered and directed to the place of judgement. The people will tremble from fear and horror of that day. Eyes will shed tears, and hearts will break apart from the fear of being judged.

Oh servants of Allah! Take advantage of your lifetime that is going to elapse. Put entertainment aside, and stand up at night in repentance with regret, since such repentance is accepted. The forgiveness of Allah is accepted and His favors are evident. Therefore, if you have done bad deeds earlier in your life, hasten to do good acts, praising Allah the Almighty, and do not delay. Whoever has failed to do an obligatory duty, should do it, and whoever had a kafara that he should do, should do it. Moreover, whoever was unust to his fellow Muslim concerning his money, or honor, or anything else, should ask Allah the Almighty for forgiveness before there comes a day when he has no money. On that day, if he has a good deed, it will be taken from him according to the amount of his injustice. And if he did not have any good deeds, then bad deeds will be taken from the person who was treated unjustly and will be given to him. Hence, know that Allah ordered you with an order that He started with Himself, then by His glorifying angels, and then with you oh believers, both jinn and mankind
