View Full Version : Madrasa schools in Indonesia

I just learned that Barack Obama, one of the current front-runners for the Democratic Party nomination for US President went to a Madrasa school in Indonesia between the ages of 6 and 10.

Some people are wanting to make a big deal about this. Some people say it is insignificant. I don't even know what a Madrasa school is. Can anyone educate me?

Yeh, I know it means school but a lot of people seem to use it as if it means an islamic school (I didn't even know that until I came to LI)

hm well i guess coz they're still schools.

madrasah comes from 'diraasah'/'yadrus' which means 'study'/'studying'

so madrasah = place where u study (i.e. school) (can refer to any sort of school)

madrasah ibti-daa-iyyah = primary school

madrasah thaanawiyyah = secndry school

jami'3ah = uni

Hello GraceSeeker what is your opinion about all this fiasco?

Also their is considerable view that since it is a christian nation muslims should not be allowed to. _ _ _ _ (fill in the gap), but my point is America is a more of a secular state with a Christian Majority so it is not a matter of some prohibition in the christian scriptures.

Anyway What is you opinion on this?

To answer you Skillganon, let me copy the two posts I made from a different forum, where I first heard this news:

I was simply asking the question, why now is this becoming news? chillary putting it out makes sense, as she will need to do some "battle" before ascending to the democratic throne, but are Americans ready for an Islamic-raised President? I know the media at-large is ready, they are foaming at the mouth, but is Joe-six-pack? I doubt it.

as far as issues, He's adamantly anti-life, so I dont have to give it a second thought.
John Randolph, served in Congress from 1799 to 1813. And he was the Republic Party leader during the presidency of Thomas Jefferson. He was defeated for reelection in 1812, but elected in 1814 and 1816, skipped a term, and served from 1819 until his resignation in 1825. Randolph was appointed to the Senate in December 1825, to fill a vacancy and served until 1827. Randolph was elected to the Congress in 1826, chairing the Committee on Ways and Means.

Now why is that significant to this discussion? Randolph was a Muslim. That he was a Muslim became a concern to some when the US had to deal with the Barbary Pirates (Libyia). But Randolph voted to send in the marines -- to Tripoli (and now you know where that line in the Marine Hymn comes from). And Randolph also became a Christian in later life, though not at the time of his election.

I think paranoia can get us to think that any little thing is important when someone is different than ourselves. The question should not be about Barack Obama's past or even his present religion and then have people make inferences for themselves from that. The question should be is Obama a patriot? Will he seek to serve the country if elected? The other questions are moot if we get the right answers to these two.
Barndog, et al, I'm not saying that one should not consider a person's faith as part of the process one uses to determine if a candidate is someone you wish to vote for. But I think that for one candidate to highlight an opposing candidates attendance at a Muslim elementary school is to play to American paranoia, and does not serve the electorate well. If they were to bring up issues related to Obama's actual beliefs that might be connected therein it would be one thing, but all that I have heard so far is that we shouldn't trust him because of it, with no reason given other than an apparent play to our national paranoia with all things Muslim.
I'm from Illinois, so I had heard of Obama a little bit before, but did not vote for him for Senator. I like much of what he has done, but we have diametrically opposing views regarding the sanctity of unborn human life. As long as he supports abortion on demand, I do not think I will be able to vote for him.

Is this guy a Muslim himself? I think they said he was a Christian now.

Wow, he studied at a Muslim school when he was a kid. He should be executed. :rollseyes

The hype they are making of this is just pathetic.

i have a dial up connection so i can't really get the video except in 2 second bites. seems that hillary clinton dug up and exposed his criminal past - attending a muslim religious school in indonesia as a kid? is that it?
i'll have to see if i can find an article on this, since video really doesn't work for me.
this just confirms my negative feelings toward hillary clinton - that's stooping pretty low.
i'll have to check obama out - the only candidate that i like at all is dennis kucinich, and he has no chance at all. basically, i think the whole presidential election is a farce.
p.s. if anybody has a link to an article i can read about this, please post it. i can't make a whole lot of sense out of the video. thanks.
