The Ten Reasons that are Required to Instigate the Love of Allah

Al-Imam ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah be pleased with him)

· First: Recitation of the Qur’an with contemplation and understanding of its meanings, and what is meant of it, as the contemplation of a book that someone memorizes and explains in order to make others understand the intent of the author from it.

· Second: Getting close to Allah by way of an-Nawafil (supererogatory actions) after the Fara’id (obligatory actions), for indeed it leads to the rank of being loved after the rank of loving.

· Third: Continuance of His remembrance at all times, with the tongue and the heart and the action and in any state, so his share of love is in proportion to his share of this remembrance.

· Fourth: Giving precedence to what He loves over what you love when the Hawaa (whims and desires) start prevailing, and then ascending to what He loves even if the ascent becomes difficult.

· Fifth: Having the heart to examine His names and His attributes, and observing them and being aware of them, and rolling about in the gardens of this awareness, for the one who is aware of Allah through His names and his attributes and his actions then He has certainly loved him.

· Sixth: Observing His kindness and benevolence, and His blessings and bounties, both inward and outward, for verily it is a motive towards loving Him.

· Seventh: And it is the most amazing of them: the breaking of the heart in its entirety before Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta’alaa), and there is no expression of this better than this other than names and phrases.

· Eighth: Seclusion with Him at the time of the divine descending, to call upon Him and to recite His words, and standing with the heart and behaving before Him with the behavior of servitude, then concluding that with asking for forgiveness and repentance.

· Ninth: Sitting with the affectionate and truthful ones, and collecting the best fruits of their words just as he selects the best of fruits, and not speaking except if the benefit of the speech has become predominant and you have known that in it is an increase of your state of affairs and a benefit for others.

· Tenth: Staying away from every reason that stands between the heart and between Allah ‘Azza wa Jall.
