It's part of the South Indian languages, including Tamil, Telegu, Kannada e.t.c. so that will explain it's linguistic closeness towards them. I am not Malayali myself, but I know a few friends who are.

I don't know much malayalam, but here are a couple of basic things I already know:

Greetings = Namaskarram

Prayer = Niskaram

Mosque/Church/Place of Worship = Pali

Here = Ivede

There = Avede

Where = Evede

Some phrases:

Pali evede
= Where is the moque?

Namal pali niskirchu
= We prayed at the mosque (I think)

Ningal'a peredentha?
= What is your name?

Vanakkam,

I would like to learn malayalam, many Indian immigrants in my country is Tamil. i just know some Tamil words such as Vanakkam, Amma, Ellek, Chellama, Vithu, Ullagamae Samayyam Valnuli Aaru...thats all...

I am a Malay but also speak Thai co-linear with Malay. Malay and Thai is easy for people who speak language with basic Sanskrit, Persian, and Arabic : )
