Assalamu alaykum,

Just thought it would be nice if we had a lil thread on arabic literature, somewhere we could discuss our fave poems or ones that have inspired us insha Allah...

The following poem is mentioned by Al-Imaan Nawawi in the beginning of his book Riyadhus Saaliheen.

(The poet is unknow) He said:


ان لله عبادا فطنا : طلقوا الدنيا و خافوا الفتنا

نظروا فيها فلما علموا : انها ليست لحي وطنا

جعلوها لجة واتخذوا : صالح اﻻعمال فيها سفنا

Idhaa qaalat Hadhaami fasaddiquuhaa ** fa innal quwla maa qaalat hadhaami

The poet was talkin' bout his wife, his requestin everyone to beleive her cos everything she says is nothing but the truth, and it was said that 7adhami was an old lady who had terrific eyesight and she would warn her people if there was an army approaching (dunno if she's the same lady)

What about the poem sheikh Yahya used to recite:

و لقد نصحتك ان قبلت نصيحتي : والنصح اغلى ما يباع و يوهب

The poems saying that certainly i have given you advise if you're gonna take my advise, and advise is more valuable, It can't be sold or granted.

I think the followin poem by Al-Imaam Shaifi3ee is brilliant masha Allah:


اذا نطق السفيه فﻻ تجبه :فخير من اجابته السكوت

فان كلمته فرجت عنه : و ان خليته كمدا يموت

It's saying that if a fool speaks to you then don't respond to him/her cos bein' silent is better than answerin' him/her, and if you do reply to them you'll only be releivin them, but if you leave them he dies in sadness...

The Poem In my Sig is One I like very Much By Imaam Ash-Shaafi'ee too:

شكوت إلى وكيع سوء حفظي** فأرشدني إلى ترك المعاصي

وقــال إن علم الله نـــــــورٌ ** ونور الله لا يعطى لعاصي


“I complained to Wakee` about my bad memory,
and he taught me that I should keep away from sin.

He said that knowledge of Allaah is light,
and the light of Allaah is not given to the sinner.”

yh masha Allah that poem is reallly nice, it's amazin to think that Wakee' Rahimahu Allah told an Imaam, who worships Allah day n night to avoid sins.......what about us? :S

I was on an Arabic forum just now and came across this poem:

اعتزل ذكر الأغاني والغزل....................... وقل الفصل وجانب من هزل

بن الوردي (691-749هـ=1292-1349مi

عمر بن مظفر بن عمر بن محمد بن أبي الفوارس أبو حفص زين الدين بن الوردي المعري الكندي. شاعر أديب مؤرخ، ولد في معرة النعمان (بسورية) وولي القضاء بمنبج وتوفي بحلب. وتنسب إليه اللامية التي أولها: اعتزل ذكر الأغاني والغزل التى انا بصدد نشرها
و حقيقة انا كنت قد قرأت بضعة ابيات من هذه القصيد و كنت اتمنى لو احصل على بقية الابيات
ومن فضل الله تعالى قام احد الاخوة الفضلاء جزاه الله خير بنشرها فى احد المنتديات

أنـا لا أختـار تقبـيـل يــدٍ*** قطعها أفضل مـن تلـك القُبَـل
إن جزتني عن مديحي صرت في *** رقّهـا أوْ لا فيكفينـي الخجـل
أعذب الألفاظ قولـي لـكَ خـذْ *** وأمـرّ اللفـظ نطقـي بلـعـل
مُلك كسرى عنه تغنـي كسـرة *** وعن البحـر اجتـزاء بالوشـل
اعتبـر نحـن (قسمنـا بينهـم) *** تلقـه حقـاً (وبالحـقّ نــزل)
ليس ما يحوي الفتى من عزمـةٍ *** لا ولا فـات يـومـا بالكـسـل
اطرح الدنيـا فمـن عادتهـا *** تخفض العالي وتعلي من سفل
عيشة الراغب في تحصيلهـا *** عيشة الجاهل فيهـا أوأقـل
كم جهول بـات فيهامكثـرا *** وعليم بات منها فـي علـل
كم شجاع لم ينل فيها المنـى *** وجبان نـال غايـات الأمـل
فاترك الحيلة فيهـا واتكـل *** انما الحيلة في تـرك الحيـل
أيّ كفٍّ لم تنل منهـا المنـى *** فرماهـا الله منـه بالشـلـل
لا تقل اصلي وفصلـي أبـدا *** إنما أصل الفتى ما قد حصل
قد يسود المرء مـن دون أبٍ *** وبحسن السبك قد ينقى الدغل
قيمة الانسـان مـا يحسنـه *** أكثر الانسـان منـه أم أقـل
إنما الوَرد من الشـوك ومـا *** ينبت النرجس إلا من بصـل
غير أنـي أحمـدالله علـى *** نسبي إذ بأبي بكـرٍ اتصـل
قيمة الإنسـان مـا يحسنـه *** أكثر الإنسـان منـه أم أقـل
أكتم الأمريـن فقـرا وغنـى *** واكسب الفلس وحاسب من بطل
وادرع جـدا وكـدا واجتنـب *** صحبة الحمقى وأرباب الخلـل
بيـن تبذيـر وبخـل رتـبـة *** وكـلا هذيـن ان زاد قـتـل

دار جار السوء بالصبـر وان *** لم تجد صبرا فما احلى النقـل
جانب السلطان واحـذر بطشـه *** لا تعانـد مـن إذا قـال فعـل
لا تلِ الأحكـام إن هـم سألـوا *** رغبة فيك وخالف مـن عـذل
إن نصف الناس أعـداء لمـن *** وليَ الأحكـام هـذا إن عـدل
فهـو كالمحبـوس عـن لذّاتـه ***وكلا كفّيه فـي الحشـر تغـل
إن للنقـص والإستثقـال فــي *** لفظة القاضي لوعظـا أو مثـل

إن من يطلبه المـوت علـى *** غـرّةٍ منـه جديـرٌ بالوجـل
غب وزر غبّاً تزد حبّاً فمـن *** أكثر الترداد أقصـاه الملـل
لا يضر الفضل إقـلال كمـا *** لا يضر الشمس إطباق الطّفل
خذ بنصل السيف واترك غمده*** واعتبر فضل الفتى دون الحلل

When The shiekh was teaching us It,He made the students memorise it, even some of the Lil kiddos cause its got alot of hikmah in it,
they'd get up group by group and start to recite.. like they do for the bukhari and muslim classes remember! :D

غِبْ وزُرْ غِبَّاَ تزِدْ حُبَّاً فمـنْ * أكثـرَ التَّردادَ أقـصاهُ المَلَلْ

لا يضـرُّ الفضلَ إقلالٌ كما * لا يضرُّ الشمسَ إطباقُ الطَّفَلْ

خُذْ بنصلِ السَّيفِ واتركْ غِمدهُ * واعتبرْ فضلَ الفتى دونَ الحُلُلْ

حُبّكَ الأوطانَ عجـزٌ ظاهرٌ * فـاغتربْ تلقَ عن الأهلِ بَدَلْ

So Abul Abbaas Al-morree narrated from Al-Rayaashee who narrated from Al-Asma'ee who said:
When the death of 7ajjaaj neared he started reciting:-

O my lord indeed my enemies have sworn and exerted,
that i am a man from the residers of the fire

do they swear on blindness, woe to them
Their knowledge isn't like (the knowledge) of the great in affairs the most Forgiving

So Al-7assan was informed of this and he said: verliy if he is saved, he is saved because of these 2 (verses)

And some added to this poem:

Indeed if the leaders servants' begin to age
to mend their ways they free them, the way the pious free them

And you O my creator deserves more in that generosity,
I have certainly aged in freeing, so save me from the fire

والنَّارُ يَصْلاها الشَّقيُّ بِحِكْمَة *** وكذا التَّقِيُّ إلى الجِنَانِ سَيَدْخُلُ
ولِكُلِّ حَيٍّ عاقلٍ في قَبرِه *** عَمَلٌ يُقارِنُهُ هناك وَيُسْأَلُ

My aspiration in this world is to put forth knowledge,

Being one who is calling to the Qur'an and sunan,
That, in their gatherings, the men have forgotten;

And, as a Mujahid, on the farthest frontlines to stay,
If I am called forth, being the first to make my way;

ًWith the clanking of weapons in the darkness, frequented by silence,
Clashing with the disbelievers, encircled by the violence;

Not turning back, facing my demise with my chest,
To be killed by a disbeliever is the youth's death noblest;

So, O my Lord, allow me not to die in any other way,
And use me not as a stuffing for the graves.

قال الحائر إيليا:
جئتُ لا أعلم من أين ولكني أتيتُ
ولقد أبصرت قُدّامي طريقا فمشيتُ
وسأبقى ماشيا إن شئت هذا أم أبيتُ
كيف جئت؟ كيف أبصرت طريقي؟
لست أدري!
ويرد دكتورنا:
جئتُ دنياي وأدري، عن يقين كيف جئتُ
جئت دنياي لأمرٍ من هُدى الآيِ جلوتُ

I was going to make a separate thread for this, but I think it's best posted here. The following poems are all from Khateeb al-Baghdaadee's book, 'Iqtidaa-ul-'Ilm al-'Amal' (knowledge mandates action). Forgive me for not typing up the arabic, but it's easier if I just post up the translation:

Muhammad bin Abee 'Alee al-Asbahaanee recited to some of them:

"Act upon your knowledge and you will profit, O man
Knowledge doesn't benefit so long as one doesnt't perfect his actions
Knowledge is beauty and Taqwaa of Allah is its decoration
Those with Taqwaa are always preoccupied with their knowledge
The proof of Allah, O possessor of knowledge, is immense
Neither plotting not scheming concerning it is of any use
Acquire knowledge and perform deeds as much as you can
And do not let vain pastimes and argumentation distract you
Teach the people and always make it your goal to benefit them
And beware, beware of fatigue and weariness overtaking you
Admonish your brother with gentleness when he makes a mistake
For knowledge is affectionate with those who are overcome by errors
And if you are amidst a people that have no religious morals
Then command them to do good when they act ignorantly (i.e. sin)
And if they disobey you, then remind them without getting annoyed
And be patient, strive in patience and do not let their actions worry you
For every goat is attached to its two feet
Have patience whether they are oppressive or fair"

(Khateeb al-Baghdaadee said) I read in the back of a book from Abu Bakr Muhammad bin 'Abdillaah bin Abaan al-Haythee:

"If knowledge is not acted upon, it becomes a proof against you
And you will not be excused for what you carry (i.e. of knowledge)
So if you come to realize this fact, then you will also realize
That the proof of a man's speech lies in his actions."

Abu 'Abdillaah Muhammad bin 'Alee bin 'Abdillaah as-Sooree recited to me the following verses from himself:

"For how long will I strive in seeking knowledge
Working hard to gather it and welcoming it warmly
Seeking to study from it all of its forms and subjects
And diffifcult topics, while not producing any deeds at all
If the one seeking knowledge doesn't produce good deeds
Based on his knowledge, he becomes a wretched servant
Verily, grasping the forms of knowledge only benefits
Those who act upon them whilst being a pious person."

Meaning:

A friend who does not benefit at the time of hardships., Is close to an enemy on the scales.
The friend does not remain, during all times, Nor does the brother, except for consolation,
I searched the days, with all my strengths, For a brother to trust, but my search was fruitless,
The lands and those who live them were barren, As though its people were not people [I wanted them to be]
