BRUMAS - Cat in the pink over new colour

by:BBC NEWS 24

"A west Devon couple are baffled by how their nine-year-old white cat turned pink after a weekend stroll.

'Barbie pink'

Philip and Joan Worth said they were shocked when Brumas returned home.

Mrs Worth said: "He was pink - Barbie pink. His head, ears and right down his body, although not underneath, had gone a quite brilliant pink.

"We went to the vet on Saturday, but they couldn't find any reason for it, although they decided it wasn't toxic, which was what I was worried about."

Brumas' new colour is not toxic, vets have said
Mr Worth said: "We have thought about everything as to how this happened, from him being covered in some form of cow treatment to children's poster paints.

"We have no clue where he was that could have caused this to happen."

However, paint is not believed to be the cause as Brumas' fur was not matted.

The couple, who adopted Brumas after he was found on Dartmoor and taken in by the Cats Protection League, have five other cats but none of them has been affected in the same way.

Mrs Worth added: "He seems fine, he's eating well and the other cats aren't terribly bothered." "

Is it haraam to have cats in the house?
What is the difference between having a cat and having a dog?

Do cats make your house stink?

Sorry cat lovers those questions have been bugging since this thread never seems to stop.

Ruling on keeping cats

Question:

I know that cats in Islam are regarded as clean and pure animals but i am not sure what the ruling is on keeping them in the house as pets.
I don't have anything against cats but i feel keeping them in the house and letting them wonder around the kitchen، bedroom etc is unhygienic. Please could you shed some light on this issue.

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

It is permissible in Islam for a person to keep permissible things that no one else has taken possession of before him, such as taking firewood from the desert or wood from the forest. The same applies to taking cats and raising them. One takes possession of a permissible thing by be acquiring it and having it under one's care, provided that it does not belong to anyone.
Based on the above, we may say that there is nothing wrong with keeping cats which do not belong to anyone, on condition that one feeds them and does not torment them. But if it is proven that they cause some harm, such as if they are ill or one fears that they may transmit disease, then you should not keep them, because “there should be no harming nor reciprocating harm.” So whoever will be harmed by a cat’s presence should not keep one. Similarly, one who is not able to feed a cat should let it eat from the vermin of the earth and not keep it locked up, because of the report narrated by al-Bukhaari (3223) and Muslim (1507) from ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with them both), according to which the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “A woman was punished because of a cat which she kept locked up until it died, and she entered Hell because of it, because she did not feed it or give it water when she kept it locked up, neither did she let it eat from the vermin of the earth.” For more information see question no. 3004.

With regard to cats eating food or drinking water, that does not make the food or water naajis (impure), because of the report narrated in Sunan Abi Dawood and elsewhere, which says that a woman brought some hareesah (a kind of food) to ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) and found her praying. (‘Aa’ishah) gestured to her that she should put it down. Then a cat came and ate some of it. When ‘Aa’ishah had finished praying, she ate from where the cat had eaten and said, “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘They (cats) are not naajis (impure), rather they are among those who go around among you (al-tawwaafeena ‘alaykum).’ I saw the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) doing wudoo’ with water from which a cat had drunk.”

According to another report narrated by Abu Dawood (68) from Kabshah bint Ka’b ibn Maalik, who was married to Ibn Abi Qutaadah, Abu Qutaadah entered and she poured some water for him to do wudoo’. A cat came and drank from the water, and he tipped the vessel for it so that it could drink. Kabshah said: “He saw me looking at him and he said, ‘Do you find it strange, O daughter of my brother?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “They (cats) are not naajis (impure), rather they are among those who go around among you (al-tawwaafeena ‘alaykum).”’” These two reports were classed as saheeh by al-Bukhaari, al-Daaraqutni and others, as was stated in al-Talkhees by Ibn Hajar, 1/15.

“Those who go around among you (al-tawwaafeena ‘alaykum)” means that they are like servants who are with people in their houses, i.e., cats are always with people, in their houses and among their vessels and furnishings, etc., and this is something that cannot be helped.

So if a cat drinks from a vessel or eats some of the food, it does not become naajis (impure). The owner has the choice. If he is not put off or if he needs it, he may eat (the food) or drink (the water), because it is taahir (pure), unless it is obvious that it will cause harm. If he is put off by the idea of eating or drinking, then he may leave it.

But we should point out here that what some people do, paying a great deal of attention to their cats and beautifying them, spending large amounts of money on them, is indicative of a lack of common sense and religious commitment, and exaggeration with regard to leisure, when there are millions of needy Muslims all over the world, let alone the fact that we Muslims should pay attention to making the best use of our time and filling it with worthwhile and beneficial pursuits, far removed from this folly which has come to us from the kaafir west where some people spend more on their cats and dogs than they spend on their own sons and daughters, let alone the poor and needy. They may even bring their pets to stay in fancy hotels and bequeath large amounts of money to them. Praise be to Allaah Who has honoured us with Islam and distinguished us from all the other nations.

We should also point out that selling cats is not allowed, as was narrated in Saheeh Muslim (2933) from Abu’l-Zubayr who said: “I asked Jaabir about the price of a dog or a cat. He said, ‘The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade that.’” For more information see question no. 7004 and 10207.

AsalamuALyakum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh,

Hadith - Bukhari 3:553, Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar [Also in Muslim, Narrated Abu Huraira]

Allah's Apostle said, "A woman was tortured and was put in Hell because of a cat which she had kept locked till it died of hunger." Allah's Apostle further said, "(Allah knows better) Allah said (to the woman), 'You neither fed it nor watered when you locked it up, nor did you set it free to eat the insects of the earth.' "

Hadith - Muwatta 2.13

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ishaq ibn Abdullah ibn Abi Talha from Humayda bint Abi Ubayda ibn Farwa that her maternal aunt Kabsha bint Kab ibn Malik, who was the wife of the son of Abu Qatada al-Ansari, told her that once Abu Qatada was visiting her and she poured out some water for him to do wudu with. Just then a cat came to drink from it, so he tilted the vessel towards it to let it drink. Kabsha continued, "He saw me looking at him and said, 'Are you surprised, daughter of my brother?' I said, 'Yes.' He replied that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, cats are not impure. They intermingle with you .' "

Yahya said that Malik said, "There is no harm in that unless one sees impurities on the cat's mouth."

Hadith - Muslim, Narrated 'Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin

Dawud ibn Salih ibn Dinar at-Tammar quoted his mother as saying that her mistress sent her with some pudding (harisah) to Aisha who was offering prayer. She made a sign to me to place it down. A cat came and ate some of it, but when Aisha finished her prayer, she ate from the place where the cat had eaten. She stated: The Messenger of Allah said: It is not unclean: it is one of those who go round among you. She added: I saw the Messenger of Allah performing ablution from the water left over by the cat.

Hadith - Dawud, Narrated Jabir ibn Abdullah

The Prophet forbade payment for cat.

Note: The name of Abu Hurayrah, a major authority on hadith, literally translates to "cat man" or "father of cats". Both Abu Hurayrah and the Prophet enjoyed the presence of cats.

Action Items for the Muttaqun:

Do not sell a cat for money or other traded goods.

There is no harm in the cat's saliva unless the cat has visible impurities on its mouth.

Feel free to have pet cats, but be sure to adequately feed and water, and provide roaming time.

Remember... Allah, subhana watala, sees everything we do!

Pond for cats

by: BBC SCIENCE
BBC SCIENCE

Creating a mini-pond

  • You can make a small pond out of virtually any container. Old enamel sinks or stone troughs work well, but make sure that whatever you use is watertight.
Fill the container with rainwater. If you have to use tap water, leave it to stand for a few days before continuing so that additives such as chlorine evaporate.
  • Construct a ramp or simply put stones at one edge of your container so that if an animal falls in it can get out again and won't drown.

OR

  1. You'll need to dig a shallow hole for your pond. Make sure it has a sloping edge so that animals can get in and out easily. It's also a good idea to have shelved sections of the pond to create different depths to suit different plants and wildlife.
  2. Create a deeper section of the pond in the middle, at least 60cm deep, so that it doesn't freeze solid in winter. This will help hibernating wildlife.
  3. Line the hole with butyl or polythene pond liner for speed, or choose the traditional method of lining with clay.
  4. Fill your pond with rainwater if possible. If you have to use tap water, leave it to stand for a few days so that additives such as chlorine vaporate.

Cats breed

Part XXV Breed profile :Cornish rex :)

Don't look now, follows our poll:hiding:
Origin :
The Cornish Rex cat gets his name from the Rex rabbit The similarities come from the unusual wavy coat. The Cornish Rex came about in Cornwall, England in 1950 and it seems occurred from a mutated gene. In the United States the Cornish Rex was recognized for championship in 1979 as is presently involved in competition all over the world.

I look like a deer :-[
Appearance :
This cat is very lean and resembles a Whippet dog with its arched back and pulled up stomach. Long, thin legs and the way it poses on its feet make the cat look as if it's standing on tiptoe.

Body:
very distinctive, small to medium in size, males proportionately larger but never coarse. Torso long and slender, not tubular, showing a deep, but not broad chest. The general outline is comprised of graceful arches and curves without any sign of flatness. The back is naturally arched and evident when the cat is standing naturally. The underline gently curves upward from the ribcage to form a smallish (tucked up in appearance) waistline. Hips and thighs muscular and feel somewhat heavy in proportion to the rest of the body.

Coat patterns:
The coloring of the Cornish Rex may be of any variety including colorpointed. The major factor is the coat. It is so important in showing the cat that usually at least 50 points will be put towards the coat.
Colours: White, Cream, Blue and White, Tortoiseshell, Torti and White Van, Cinnamon Silver, Point Si-Rex.

Ready for the football final cup
Personality
Intelligent, inquisitive and extrovert, shows great resourcefulness in getting what it wants. Playful and affectionate, enjoys indoor life.
The Cornish Rex is a most affectionate cat who is active and playful. Cornish Rex cats will fetch and catch and will be like a kitten far into his maturity.

Who said my ears are not clean :? :-[
[/B]
Intelligence
They are intelligent and ready to live only indoor

Grooming
The coat on the Cornish Rex is its most unusual feature. Short and very soft it lies quite close to the body and appears as waves of curls all over the cat including it's stomach. Daily hand grooming is what the Cornish Rex cat requires. He does need a warm climate.

Health
Despite its delicate appearance the Cornish Rex is a hardy and robust breed. They do not experience any unusual or significant health problems and should live to 12-15 years. Due to their short coat these cats may not be comfortable outdoors on cold or wet days as they do feel the cold.
I am happy

Cats breed

Part XXVI Breed profile :American curl - the Peter Pan of felines world :)

Origin :
On a typical hot June day in 1981, a stray longhaired black female cat with funny ears mooched a meal from Joe and Grace Ruga in Lakewood, California, and moved in. "Shulamith" is the original American Curl to which all bona fide pedigrees trace their origin. No one ever suspected that from that simple encounter, and the birth of some kittens 6 months later, would grow a worldwide debate about the genetics behind those unusual curled ears. When selective breeding began in 1983, fanciers bred the American Curl with an eye toward developing a show breed. In analyzing data on 81 litters (383 kittens), renowned feline geneticist, Roy Robinson of London, England, confirmed that the ear-curling gene is autosomal dominant, which means that any cat with even one copy of the gene will show the trait. In the December 1989 Journal of Heredity, Robinson reported finding no defects in any of the crosses he analyzed. This information provided the pathway for a new and healthy breed…and one with an outstanding temperament.

Appearance :
  • Boasting head adornments that could have easily been fashioned by a legendary hat designer, along with their opulently plumed tails reminiscent of a luxurious ostrich-feather boa, the American Curl has audiences in awe worldwide.
  • Designed exclusively by Mother Nature, the ears can be likened to those of a Lynx with long tufts fanning outward accentuating the swept-back look, while complementing the Curl's overall sophistication, stylish elegance, and dynamic presence.

Body:
Torso Shape: semi-foreign rectangle, length one and one-half times height at shoulder, medium depth of chest and flank. Size: intermediate, with allowances for larger males. Musculature: moderate strength and tone, flexible. Tail: flexible, wide at base, tapering; equal to body length. Legs: length medium in proportion to body, set straight when viewed from front or rear. Medium boning, neither fine nor heavy. Neck: medium. Feet: medium and rounded

Coat patterns:
  • Longhair Division: Texture: fine, silky, laying flat. Undercoat: minimal. Coat length: semi-long. Tail coat: full and plumed. Color: all colors accepted as listed.
  • Shorthair Division: Texture: soft, silky, laying flat, resilient without a plush dense feel. Undercoat: minimal. Coat length: short. Tail coat: same length as body coat.
  • Color: all colors accepted as listed.

Personality
Wake-up call! The alarm rings and emerging out from under the covers eager to start the day is your Curl buddy. Eyelid pats, nose kisses, and hairlicking prompt a gentle awakening. :statisfie Then your eyes focus on that exuberant little Curl face, and another day begins. The Curl personality is truly unique. If not sleeping up high somewhere in a large salad bowl, figuring out with great determination just how to get into the shower with you, or assuming their spot right in front of a favorite TV show, they are patting at your glasses while you try to read the paper. Needless to say, Curls are very people-oriented, faithful, affectionate soulmates adjusting remarkably fast to other pets, children, and new situations. People say they are very dog-like in their attentiveness to their owners, following them around so not to miss anything.

The first american curl :)
[/B]
Intelligence
When introduced into a new home, Curl's seem to have an inherent respect for the current pet occupants, giving them plenty of room to adjust to the new kid on the block. Not overly talkative, the Curl's curiosity and intelligence is expressed through little trill-like cooing sounds. Because they retain their kitten-like personality well throughout adulthood, they are referred to as the Peter Pan of felines.

Grooming
Because both coat lengths have minimal undercoat resulting in
non-matting hair, grooming an American Curl is easy -- an occasional bath
and combing is all that is needed. Care should be taken when handling
the ears to avoid breaking the cartilage -- do not force the ear into
unnatural positions.

Health
They are healthy cats and they have a good hearing. Just try the "can opener" test - you won’t find any problems with their hearing (smile).

The truth about PET FOOD RECALL

Category: They wanted to kill our pets :(

by Dr. Jon from Pet place site:)

The Food and Drug Administration announced (FDA) that the contaminated wheat gluten and rice protein concentrate imported from China was
mislabeled and was really wheat flour contaminated with melamine and melamine-related products.

It is also believed that the contamination was deliberate. It is thought that the Chinese added the melamine to the wheat to increase the "protein" concentration of the product making it to appear to have a higher protein concentration than it really had.
Melamine is rich in nitrogen which can give the illusion of protein.
Recently, tests conducted on contaminated pet food and the necropsies of affected animals  have suggested that a combination of
chemicals--each alone, seemingly nontoxic--form insoluble substances
that results in crystals that physically damage the kidneys.

For a more complete update and a link to a list of recalled foods, go to Pet Food Recall Update:

Plants for a cat garden

Carol Wallace
List of safe plants:
  • Catmint (Nepeta mussinii) can be plant at the front, where it's silvery leaves and almost perpetual froth of flowers make an excellent border for a bed. The variety called 'Blue Wonder' is a nice, compact plant that flowers in dark blue over much of the summer. 'Snowflake' flowers in white. N. faassenii 'Six Hills Giant' looks much like its smaller brethren, but is much taller, with flower spikes reaching 4'-5'; it is also sterile and won't spread about much. It will work well to hide the catnip.
    Nepeta Faassenii:

  • Cat thyme, Teucrium marum is a member of the mint family, just as the nepetas are. However, it has deep green leaves, for contrast, and the spires of flowers are crimson. Cat thyme is related to germander, which makes a beautiful hedge, and can be clipped to shape; so you could make this bed into a knot garden if you so desire, and few will be the wiser to the real purpose of your plantings. Cats actually love all the teucriums, so be prepared to find them nibbling on your knot.
    Teucrium marum:

  • Perhaps you would like to put up a trellis and have a lovely vine to give the garden some structure. Silver vine (Actinidia polygama), a relative of the kiwis, has lovely white flowers and is guaranteed to send susceptible cats into a frenzy.
    Actinidia polygama:

Plants for a cat garden

Carol Wallace
List of safe plants:
  • Another cat-pleaser is valerian (Valeriana officianalis). Also known as garden heliotrope, the umbels of pink flowers have a lovely scent, and the fern-like leaves will provide a pleasant contrast to the tiny grey of the nepeta. Cats love valerian; unfortunately, so do rats. The rumor is that the Pied Piper of Hamelin used valerian as the secret ingredient to lure the rats out of town. You can be a sort of Pied Piper, too, if your cats are hunters; attract the cats and the rats will be taken care of.
    Valeriana officianalis:

If the very thought gives you the shudders, a garden of cats may be the way to go. Interestingly, many cat plants, whether for or about cats, tend toward the silver in foliage; most also prefer good drainage.
  • Cat tails are familiar along stream banks; they prefer boggy to wet conditions. Since they are also considered a weed in many areas, you may want to think twice about planting them, except in ponds in closed containers.
    Cat tails:

  • Since a good garden design starts with the "bones" you will want a shrub to act as a centerpiece for your design, and what better than the beloved pussy willow? Salix caprea has pink catkins, but may grow as high as 20'. which may well overwhelm the rest of the garden; the native American pussy willow (S. discolor) will probably not top 10 feet, and the rose gold pussywillow (S. gracilistyla) with its rose catkins with golden stamens may stop at 6'. Since willows prefer a moist soil, whereas the other cat plants discussed here prefer theirs well drained, you may simply want to plant this as a feline background.
    Salix caprea :

CATNIP - NEPETA CATARIA

Mint family (Labiatae)
  • The name: The name Nepeta is believed to have come from the town of Nepete in Italy. Cataria is thought to have come from the Latin word for cat. :statisfie
  • Catnip is also known by the following names: Cataria, Catmint, Catnep, Catrup, Cat's Heal All, Cat's-play, Cat's Wort, Catswort, Catwort, Chi Hsueh Tsao, Field Balm, Garden Nep, Herba Cataria, Herba Catti, Nebada, Nep.
  • Constituents: include Acetic Acid, Alpha & beta-nepetalactone, Citral, Nepetalactone, Geraniol, Dipentene, Citronellol, Nerol, Butyric Acid, Valeric Acid and Tannins.

  • The plant: A hardy, upright, perennial herb with sturdy stems bearing hairy, heart-shaped, grayish-green leaves. The flowers are white or lilac, 0.25 inch long, and occur in several clusters toward the tips of the branches. Native of Europe&Asia, naturalized in North America.
  • Cultivation and Propagation: It is easily cultivated in any garden soil, with little care, as the plant does not require the moisture that most mint plants need. Plants should be grown from seed sown where they are going to stand. Bruised or recently transplanted plants are likely to be eaten by cats unless protected. The seed should be sown very thinly in rows 20 inches apart and the seedlings thinned out to 20 inches apart in the rows. It requires almost no care except occasional weeding. A bed will last several years. It can also be propagated by division of the roots in spring.
  • Harvesting: The herb is harvested just before flowering in middle to late summer on a dry sunny day and in late morning when all dew is gone. Drying should be done carefully. The leaves are stripped from the stems and dried as quickly as possible with good ventilation out of direct sunlight, or in an oven at 150 degrees Fahrenheit to avoid losing much volatile oil.
  • Human therapy: Taken as a hot infusion, Catnip promotes sweating and is beneficial for colds, flus, fevers, and infectious childhood diseases. It is soothing to the nervous system and calming to the stomach. It aids with flatulence, diarrhea, and colic. It is sometimes used as an enema to cleanse and heal the lower bowel (use in diluted form).
  • Catnip can also be used for cuts, studies show it has a natural healing quality. Crush fresh catnip leaves, damp them & apply to your cut. **
  • Some other medicinal uses for catnip are: Anaesthetic, antibiotic, anti rheumatic, antispasmodic, astringent, carminative, diuretic, muscular aches and pains, rheumatism, chills, cold in the joints, haemorrhoids, toothache.
  • K’Eogh, in his “Irish Herbal” (1735) wrote of catnip, “It provokes urination and menstruation: it expels the stillborn child; it opens obstructions of the lungs and the womb, and is good for internal bruises and shortness of breath. Drunk with salt and honey, it expels worms from the body.” ***
  • Pregnant women should avoid catnip.

  • Effects on cats:) :Catnip, a member of the mint family, is a harmless "high" for felines. Although many cats will eat it, scientists say they're reacting to the smell rather than the taste. Felines bite, chew, rub against, and roll in catnip to release the volatile oil trapped in the leaves. Catnip is harvested when this essential oil production reaches its peak, and leaves and fragrant flowers are carefully air-dried to preserve essential oils at their best.
  • About 80% of adult cats -- including lions, pumas, and leopards! -- react to this irresistible, intoxicating, analgesic soporific. The tendency to like or ignore catnip is inherited, and it's true that some cats are immune to its influence. Given to the right cat, catnip can cause an amazing reaction! The cat will rub it, roll over it, kick at it, and generally go nuts for several minutes. Then the cat will lose interest and walk away. Two hours later, the cat may come back and have exactly the same response.
  • Because there really isn't any scent that causes this sort of reaction in humans, catnip is hard for us to understand. However, it is not an uncommon behavior in animals that rely heavily on their noses.

  • Although no one knows exactly what happens in the cat's brain, it is known that the chemical nepetalactone in catnip is the thing that triggers the response. Apparently, it somehow kicks off a stereotypical pattern in cats that are sensitive to the chemical. The catnip reaction is inherited, and some cats are totally unaffected by it.
  • The reaction to catnip only lasts a few minutes. Then the cat acclimates to it, and it can take an hour or two away from catnip for the cat to "reset." Then, the same reaction can occur again. Very young kittens and older cats seem less likely to have a reaction to catnip.
  • One interesting fact is that when sniffed, catnip will stimulate kitty, however when eaten it will act as a sedative.

  • Nepetalactone: Nepetalactone causes a hallucinogenic effect. Some say the effects are similar to LSD, others say similar to marijuana. Because cats roll on the floor, which mimics a female in estrus, it has been suggested that catnip acts as an aphrodisiac, but this is unlikely as males react in just the same way. What is likely is the cat is reacting to similar "feel good" pheromones released during sexual courtship/activity. However, non sexual behaviour including playing, chasing & hunting can also be observed. The response to catnip is via the olfactory system. Even cats who can't smell will can still respond to catnip.

Cats breed

Part XXVII Breed profile :TOYGER CAT

Origin :
The name 'Toyger' comes from the the words Toy and Tiger.

The Toyger was founded by Judy Sugden of EEYAAS Cattery in the USA. The Toyger is the result of a cross between a striped Domestic Short Hair and a Standard Bengal Tabby This resulted in a striped Cat which after many years of hard work resembles a 'mini Tiger'.

The Toyger is a designer breed and currently still being developed. Breeder's are striving to give this stunning breed the true look of a mini tiger over the coming years. Many of the features proposed have never been seen in a domestic cat. Progress is slow but steady and it could be several years before the Toyger truly resembles the wild tiger although the founder is aiming at 2010. Judy Sugden says that with a few more years of breeding, her Toygers will look even more like the real thing, with ears that are shorter, smaller eyes, a bigger chin and a wider nose tip.
The Toyger has no tiger blood in it but does possess genes passed on from the Asian Leopard cat.

Appearance :
The cat has the look of a mini tiger

Body:
Toyger's are of medium size with a strong and robust torso. The tail is long and muscular and set and carried low. Toyger's coats are short, thick, plush, soft and feel extremely luxurious.

Coat patterns:
The ideal colouring for a Toyger is an orange/tan background with dark stripes like that of a Tiger. The stripes are actually long rosettes and should not be uniform like a mackerel pattern but more like long random individual stripes. The coat must be striped with no spotting. The ears small and rounded, good solid bone structure and overall balance.

Personality
The Toyger has a laid back easy going temperament and makes a good companion. They are athletic and love to be around people. They are very suitable for most households and get on well with children and other pets.

[/B]
Intelligence
Toygers are intelligent and are easily trained

Grooming
Only to prevent hairballs

Health
Toygers are generally robust and healthy

Cats breed

Part XXVIII Breed profile :CHAUSIE CAT

Origin :
The Chausie is regarded as one of the most beautiful breeds of cat. Originally a hybrid of the African Jungle Cat (Felis Chaus - Right), the Chausie with its beautiful golden or melanistic (black) coat captures the look and feel of the wild in a domestic cat.

The breed name Chausie was derived from the scientific name of the Jungle Cat, which is Felis Chaus. The Chausie is an effort to preserve the stunning wild look by reproducing it in a loving and friendly, domestic cat.

Appearance :
Their size, look, and manner all hinting at their proud wild heritage.

Body:
They are large cats, standing anywhere from 14 to 18 inches at the shoulders. They are tall, lean and very long cats, with their hind legs rising slightly higher than the front. The Chausie should be almost exactly twice as long as it is tall. Chausies are also considered twice as tall as a domestic cat and can be 2 to 3 times as heavy. Male Chausies can weigh twenty pounds or more with the female somewhat smaller.

Coat patterns:
There are only 3 currently recognised colours of Chausies, and all are colours naturally found in the Jungle cat. These colours are golden, black, and silver-tipped melanistic. Chausie kittens commonly have stripes or spots in their coat when young. As the kitten matures, the markings on their body should fade leaving a stunning, wild ticked coat. Barring or stripes on the legs and face should still be visible in the adult coat.

Personality
Chausies are typically sweet-natured, very affectionate cats.
Their muscular build and wild ancestry enable them to be quite athletic and fast They rarely sit in one place for very long. The wild look and personality of this breed quickly captures the hearts of their humans. Chausie owners know that their Chausie is a very special cat.

[/B]
Intelligence
Alert and intelligent, they are often referred to as "dog like" in their manner.

Grooming
Little grooming and against hairballs.

Health
Climbing is essential for a Chausie's mental health. Have an off-limits surface in your home and you're going to have a problem!

Salam,

at first my only thought in arriving to this thread was a complaint about the new litter of black kittens in my back garden belonging to neighbours. It is the third litter of little black kittens since I moved to the house I am living in early September 2005!

!!!!!!!

I can not even get in my back door without black cats crossing my path. And today arrived home to find that a mysteriously "approved of by police" visitor has broken into my home AGAIN. This is the third time!

However, I have much better animal stories to tell you all than that.

Recently a shaytan told me a story which he seemed to be using as evidence that my own method in an Animist tradition is destined to lose. My totem animals in Aboriginal culture include a red bellied black snake. It is a sort of venemous snake which politely kills and eats all the far more venemous snakes, and so folk who live out bush with young children, like having red bellied blacks around.

So the shaytan tells me this yarn: he had seen footage over the internet of a rabbit attacking, killing and eating a snake;

he was gloating over me while telling me

So then first I told him about the man who bite a shark. It is true, he was on the network TV news in the past month. He was drunk and watching the fishermen on a jetty, and one of them had a little shark, but his line was not strong enough. The water was only a metre deep, and the drunk man jumped in and bite the shark, which of course turned on him, and he got quite badly bitten himself, but he beat the shark.

Then after that I told the shaytan another story. I saw it in the British magazine called the Fortean Times. It had an Owl and a Pussycat. The family had found a baby owl abondoned by its mommy, and their cat had just had a litter of kittens. They took the owl in, and the mommy cat adopted it in among all her kittens. The photo was so much the cutest cat photo ever in my world.

Giving a cat a bath doesn’t have to be a terrible experience for you or your kitty. It is, of course, best to start out with a kitten and get them used to the whole grooming process rather than take an adult feral rescue and try dipping him in a sink full of water!

SHAMPOO

Clasification:
  • Waterless Shampoos :-[ - for very scared cats
  • Oatmeal Shampoo
  • Soothing Shampoo
  • Hypo allergenic Shampoo
  • Flea and thick Shampoo
  • Brightening Shampoo

  • Give your cat a bath without submersing her in water
  • Unique formulas you shake or spray on - with no rinsing required
  • Cleans and freshens your cat's skin and coat

Gentle, effective cat bath without the hassle of water! Many cats dislike water, sometimes a full bath is too time-consuming, or maybe your cat just needs a portion of her coat cleaned.

Liquid Waterless Shampoo - Ideal for cats that detest water baths or if you just want a quick, convenient way to clean your cat between regular baths. Just spray on and massage into a rich lather, and then towel dry. No rinsing required. Cleans down to the skin without your cat having to suffer the discomfort of a tub bath. Comes in a 10 oz. spray bottle. For cats and dogs.

Perfect Coat Dry Powder Shampoo absorbs oil and dirt.

OR:

I bought a flea spray which doesn't require bathing either. I became friends with the dogs but still for around 2 more weeks i will not bath them.:-[ But my dogs doesn't like the sound which make the spray when i push that button. I am still tryint to finish to spray their coat.

GROOMING THE CAT
Bathing the cat

By: Dr. Foster and Smith
By: Ehow
SHAMPOO

How to give a cat a bath

Cat owners can generally depend on a cat's natural ability and desire to clean herself, but periodic baths may be necessary. The following tips can help you and your cat have a more pleasant bath experience.

  • Assemble all the necessary materials (a soft towel, soft brush, and a shampoo and conditioner formulated especially for cats) before you get your cat. If the shampoo is very thick, you can dilute it with water before use.

  • Bring your cat into the bathroom. Close the door and keep it closed until you are finished.

  • Just prior to the bath, if your cat allows, place cotton balls in the ears and apply ophthalmic ointment to protect the eyes. Place a towel in the bottom of the sink or tub to prevent slipping. Be sure the "bathroom" is warm, and that your cat has a warm place in which to dry.

  • Gently set your cat in the tub. Give your cat free rein in the bathtub using minimal restraint, but gently hold on to the back of her neck if she tries to escape.

  • Keep in mind that cats do not like to be restrained; so the less it feels like you are controlling your cat, the better. Speak in soft tones and try to appear calm, since your cat will become more nervous if she senses you are apprehensive. Signs that your cat is anxious include flattening of the ears or whiskers, tail thumping, loud vocalizations, and open mouth panting.

  • Scoop water in a plastic cup, and pour it over the cat until her fur is wet, making sure to avoid her eyes.
  • Use lukewarm water. Cats generally dislike sprays, so it is often better to pour water over the cat rather than spraying. If you must spray, avoid hard sprays and spraying near your cat's face. You may want to wrap your cat in a thin towel and wet the coat through the towel, and then apply the shampoo.
  • If you can't wrap the cat in towel, you could use the cat bag as show below:

  • After shampooing, rinse your cat thoroughly. Rinsing is the most important step. You may need to rinse your cat twice to ensure that all soap is removed from the skin and coat.

  • Dry your cat gently with a towel. "Blotting" is better than rubbing, especially in longhaired breeds. Longhaired breeds will also benefit from an additional brush-out and time under a blow dryer set on a no-heat setting (use only if your cat will tolerate the noise).
  • If your cat absolutely cannot tolerate being wet, try using a waterless or powder shampoo, or pre-moistened bath towelettes for pets. You can also give your cat a "sponge bath" with a damp towel.
  • Remember, starting baths when your cat is still a kitten can help acclimate your cat to being bathed, making future baths faster, easier, and more comfortable for you and your cat.

:sl: everyone...

Since this thread is all bout kitty's i fort i'd share sum amazing facts about these gorgus animals! :D

1. The cat receives much respect in Islam, because of tales that the Prophet Mohammed was a cat lover. One story says a cat saved Mohammed from being bitten by a deadly snake. In another, when Mohammed’s cat Muezza fell asleep on his sleeve, the Prophet cut off his sleeve rather than disturb his cat.

2. Although a kitten is blind at birth, the touch receptors in the nose are already developed, and touching noses helps a kitten make contact with his mother.

3. During deep sleep, a cat may twitch his whiskers, flex his paws or move his tail. Judging by the amount of electrical activity in the brain, scientists also think cats dream.

4. Cats can judge within three inches the location of a sound being made one yard away. This is an essential skill for a predator who needs to catch a mouse hiding in tall grass.

5. More than 20 muscles in each ear enable a cat to move her ears like radar dishes and pinpoint the source of a sound. The two ears can rotate in different directions, as well.

6. A cat's heart beats about twice as fast as your heart—about 110 to 140 times a minute in the average cat

7. Cats can compress or elongate their spine, making them smaller to sleep in snuggly places or longer to leap across wide open spaces.
8. Pouncing is powered by a cat's thighs. These muscles are so powerful that if you had a cat's thigh muscles, your thighs would be as big as your waist and you could jump from the ground to the top of a house.

9. A domestic cat's sense of smell is about 14 times stronger than a human's.

10. Cats can make more than 100 different vocal sounds. Dogs can make about 10.

11. The largest litter of kittens on record was born to a Siamese-Burmese mother, who had 19 kittens.

12. Cats of all types get more sleep than just about any other animal. They average 16 hours of sleep a day, most of it in short naps that allow the cat to quickly become fully alert.

13. Ailurophilia is the "love of cats."

14. The nose pad of a cat is ridged in a pattern that is unique, just like the fingerprint of a human.

15. 25% of cat owners blow dry their cats hair after a bath.

16. If your cat is near you, and her tail is quivering, this is the greatest expression of love your cat can give you. If her tail starts thrashing, her mood has changed --- Time to distance yourself from her.

17. Cats wag their tails when it is in a stage of conflict. The cat wants to do two things at once, but each impulse blocks the other. For example: If your cat is in the doorway wanting to go outside, and you open the door to find it raining, the cat's tail will wag because of internal conflict. The cat wants to go outside, but doesn't want to go into the rain. Once the cat makes a decision and either returns to the house or leaves into the rain, the tail will immediately stop wagging.

18. Cats knead with their paws when they're happy.

19. Your cat loves you and can "read" your moods. If you're sad or under stress, you may also notice a difference in your cat's behavior.

20. A cat will amost never "meow" at another cat. This sound is reserved for humans.

21. The more cats are spoken to, the more they will speak to you.

22. A cat that bites you after you have rubbed his stomach, is probably biting out of pleasure, not anger.

A shaytan told me about a rabbit that bite a snake and killed it.

So I told him about the Australian man who jumped into the water with a small shark and bite it. He was drunk and became quite horrifically injured, but he got the shark.

Then I told him about the owl and the pussy cat.

There is an old issue of the Fortean Times with a photo of a baby owl being brought up with a litter of kittens. Apparently the owlet fell out of its nest the family who adopted it to hand raise it had a cat with a litter of kittens, who adopted the owl also in among her kittens.

The photo was about the cutest animal photo I have ever seen.

Do you . . .

  • Enjoy unconditional love and constant companionship?

  • Believe that caring for a pet for 15 years does not seem like a lifetime?
  • Look forward to having your ankles rubbed by an affectionate, hairy animal?
  • Not mind sharing your house with someone who will never clean up after himself?
  • Love a housemate who randomly and regularly entertains you with outrageous and silly antics?
  • Want to take care of someone every day?
  • Like your lap warmed whenever you sit down?
  • Not mind spending your extra money on pet food, toys, veterinary care, and kitty litter?
  • Believe that spaying and neutering pets will solve the pet overpopulation problem?

  • Not mind living with someone who sheds, tracks kitty litter, and throws up hairballs?
  • Want to keep an ID tag on your pet?

If you answered yes to these questions, you could be a perfect cat owner. And now is the perfect time to become one. June is the American Humane's (AH) Adopt-A-Cat Month®.

Questions to ask before adoption :)

What Kind Of Cat Do You Want? - THE Appearance:

There are about 35 cat breeds, plus all the wonderful mixes. This variety in cats gives you plenty of things to take into account when making your decision.

Do you have a fondness for cats whose :
ears are folded over

or
whose noses are flatter?

Or do you like those with ears that stand erect:

or
with bushy tails?:

Do you envision a cat with a short, easy-to-care-for coat:

or
a fluffy cat that looks like a ball of fur? :

Cats come in many colors, with many features and coats – which look appeals to you? Keep in mind that, although all cats shed, longer-haired cats require almost daily brushing to keep their fur from matting. Some breeds, like Persians, need to be groomed on a regular basis, which may require professional services.

Questions to ask before adoption :)

What Kind Of Cat Do You Want? - THE Gender and age:

Gender: Do you want a male or a female cat? Knowing ahead of time whether you want a Simba or a Sasha can greatly assist you in narrowing your options.

Age: Do you want a kitten or a cat? Tiny mewing kittens are hard to resist, but, like any other baby, they require frequent feeding and lots of TLC.

Kittens need lots of attention and will have to be trained to use a litter box. Fortunately, most are fast learners and adapt quickly to their new surroundings. You may prefer adult cats that are often already litter box trained, and that will not display the crazy antics of kittens. Also, adult cats (six months or older) may be a better choice for families with small children as they are less fragile and know how to get out of the way.

Questions to ask before adoption :)

What Kind Of Cat Do You Want? - Personality:

Many cats are affectionate and friendly, while others can be aloof and distant. Some breeds are more inquisitive, more laid back, or more talkative (like the Siamese). What type of personality would work best in your household? Do you have the energy for an energetic kitten? Or would you rather have a mellow cat who is better suited to a quiet household?

Questions to ask before adoption :)

Visit your local shelter first :)

Throughout the spring and summer, animal shelters throughout the country are inundated with hundreds of homeless cats and dozens of litters of kittens. Tragically, about 71% of these animals will have to be put to sleep because there are not enough loving homes. For this reason, the American Humane Association recommends checking out your local shelter or breed placement group first.

Steps for adoption:
  • Make an appointment with an adoption counselor. Calling ahead saves time, as shelters are busy places staffed mostly by volunteers.
  • Consult a veterinarian about the health issues of different breeds of cats. Some medical problems are more common in certain breeds.
  • Prepare a list of questions and bring it with you to the shelter.
  • Request a tour of the animal wards and exercise rooms. All areas should be clean, comfortable and odor-free - indicators of quality care.
  • Observe the cats available for adoption. Select an active one that shows no signs of respiratory disease, such as sneezing or watery eyes.
  • Ask if the cat has been examined by a veterinarian or animal technician.
  • Ask whether the cat has been tested for feline leukemia, vaccinated, treated for fleas and given worm medication.
  • Play with the cat and check that she has clean ears, healthy pink membranes in her mouth and no evidence of diarrhea under the tail.
  • Check the skin for flea debris or patches that are scaly, inflamed or lacking hair. These could indicate ringworm, which is treatable but contagious (to you and other pets).
  • Pay the adoption fee and consider making a donation. Most animal shelters are private, not-for-profit organizations, operating solely on donated funds.
  • Be prepared to leave the cat at the shelter an additional 24 hours. Most shelters require this waiting period to discourage impulsive adoptions.
  • Take the cat to a veterinarian soon after adoption. Follow the veterinarian's recommendations for completing the vaccination, worming and preventative health protocol

you must really have a big yard.

I don't have cats yet:-[ we have an old male cat which each evening walks on our fence straight under my dogs nose and barks but we didn't adopt him yet. I do have 2 snails in an aquarium, 2 tortoises which are walking only inside of the house and the 2 dogs in the yard. I don't have a big yard but they like to sit in the yard door (when its opened) and watch what happens in the street:)

Here is another addition to our cat family :D

Another one of the cats had 5 kittens so that makes it 12 now that we have in the house because we had to give 2 away

We haven't named this set yet even though they're almost a month old....just can't get around to it :p

Here is just one pic. This kitty was really sleepy and was stumbling around and found this bowl on the floor empty and thought 'hey! this looks cozy' :giggling:

CAT ADOPTION
Adopt a cat in june month

by: Dr. Jon from PetPlace

Feline Temperament Testing during the adoption steps:)

If the one that captures your heart is an older feline, here are a few suggestions from animal behaviorists on how to perform a temperament test in the shelter.

  • Find out who is friendly. When you talk to them, many cats will greet you by rubbing against the cage door and purring.

  • Meet with the cat in a quiet indoor environment. Hold your fingers out and scratch the neck and head area. If he continues to respond in a positive manner, then the cat was probably well socialized in his last home.

  • Determine a cat's tolerance for touch. Try to hold the cat. If she immediately struggles to get away, she may not like human contact. Try a few more times, since the cat may be stressed and need a few minutes to calm down.

  • Test the cat for affection or aggression. After petting a cat a few times, does he nail you with his claws? This cat may not be happy with being petted, which is something to consider if you are looking for a lap cat.

  • Another thing to keep in mind is that cats are very sensitive to the scent of other cats. Consider changing your shirt and washing your hands thoroughly before visiting with another cat.
  • Don't think you have to adopt an animal on your very first visit. This is a big commitment, so take your time. It may require many visits to find the right pet.

Cats breed

Part XXIX Breed profile: American Keuda:)

Origin :
Keudas are thought to be descendents of some of the first cats brought to Texas and some may come from Spanish origins. Isolated and remote colonies which have been checked as fully as possible for the oldest lines have been the source for the breeding cats.

Appearance :
These cats are semi-foreign in build with a modified wedge head, refined muzzle and moderately large ears, making the head appear triangular. They are equipped with excess skin, elbow and belly flaps and have straight, medium to short hair, and long tapering tails.

Body:
Medium in length, athletic; a belly flap and loose skin on adults; moderately substantial bone especially in males

Coat patterns:
These cats come in varying colors. Most common are black, white, blue, smoke, brown tabby, silver tabby, color point, red, and recently, piebalds.

Personality
For the most part Keudas are energetic and outgoing. They often like to play in water and may attempt to share their owners shower or help with the dishes. It is advisable to keep fish bowls covered in their presence.Colony spirit is strong in them and they will often mother the new kitten or defend the garden from the dog next door, yet they will befriend the family dog.

[/B]
Intelligence
They may be taught to walk on a leash and are generally considered to be quite intelligent.

Grooming
Once per week.

Health
American Keuda Cats cannot tolerate extreme cold well, since they have no undercoat.

Cats breed

Part XXX Breed profile: KUCING MALAYSIA :)
The pictures belong to Kelab Kucing Malaysia

Origin :
The idea of a cat that could be identified with Malaysia came up at the end of 1994.
Opinions were sought from the various International Judges that were in Malaysia.
For almost a year, these were gathered and finally The FIFe 's President
and also as the Board Member of the International World Body in maintaining
and regulating breed standards, Mrs. Alva Uddin came out with the selection
of Kucing Malaysia or Malaysia Cat.
The first cats could be seen by the year of 2008.

Appearance :
The ideal Kucing Malaysia or Malaysia Cat is a medium sized cat with
medium boned muscular body. The main feature will be the egg shaped head
and together with the openness of the eyes, should give the
characteristic alert appearance of the breed.

Body:
Medium in length and broad chest, with good depth and strong muscle
tone. High legs, medium to slender in size (more slender for females)
with slightly oval paws.

Coat patterns:
All colors recognized in the Pointed patterns with white. A white blaze
in the face and muzzle is desirable.
The tail is medium thick with a rounded tip, of medium length and up to the shoulder
blades. Tail should be full colored.

Personality
Similar to persian

CAT COAT COLORS AND PATTERNS
Coat colors: Self (Solid) Colors - The white

from: The cat site
Pet people place
Pusscats

Solid or Self- The easiest one to recognize is a coat of one colour that is evenly distributed all over the body.

!Colors have different names in different countries and in different breeds. Different breeds/countries may use the same name for different colors! This section describes colors in as non-specific a way as possible.!

White - This is the only color that is always solid without any underlying tabby markings. There are several genetic varieties of white, some of which create an all-over solid white cat, others bicolor or tricolor cats. One genetic variety of solid white can sometimes cause deafness; however, not all white cats are deaf (just as not all deaf cats are necessarily white).
If the cat retains any spot of another colour on the coat, it is no longer considered a solid.

CAT COAT COLORS AND PATTERNS
Coat colors: Self (Solid) Colors - The blue

from:
Cat Fanciers

A "solid blue" is blue-gray all over. It may be a dark slate gray, a medium gray, or a pale ash gray. This color is also sometimes called "maltese." This is the color of the Russian Blue, Chartreux, and Korat, but it can appear in almost any other breed as well, and is also seen in non-purebreds. Solid blue does not indicate that a cat is related to any of these breeds.
