Let say that it's prayer time... and suddenly a Sunni see everybody went to a mosque... he joined the crowd and pray in the congregation... when he went off the mosque .. suddenly someone tell him that it's a Shia mosque.

Does that prayer valid?

:sl: akhi.. I really don't know ( I am sorry).. I had a friend in under-grad who was/is lebanese, for the longest time I didn't know she was a shiite...I notice only by the prayers missed one day.. the other thing that was stricking is the males always take their belt off when praying.. when I asked her about this, she stated they are not allowed to wear anything made from animals.. of course i was hot and fervent then to change people... I spoke to her about what she was doing, she said I was in no position to tell her anything when there are so many Muslims who don't pray all together... sadest part is she was from a sunni family.. and I know exactly the member that got her to be a shiite... either way it is her business.. just wish I knew then what I know now..

Question:
Can we pray behind a Shia?

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

We need to describe the beliefs (‘aqeedah) of the Shi’a so as to know the ruling on praying behind them.

For details on their beliefs, please see the answer to Question no. 4569.

With regard to preying behind one who is of this nature, Shaykh Ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

“It is not permissible to pray behind any of the mushrikeen, including those who seek the help of anyone other than Allaah and seek support from him, because seeking help through anyone other then Allaah, such as the dead, idols, the jinn, etc. is shirk, the association of others with Allaah, glorified be He.”

Fataawa al-Shaykh Ibn Baaz (vol. 2, p. 396)

And he said: one should not pray behind any imaam who is known to exaggerate concerning the Ahl al-Bayt (members of the Prophet’s household). If no such thing is known about him or any other Muslim, then it is OK to pray behind them.

Fataawa al-Shaykh Ibn Baaz, vol. 12, p. 107
