O he who is busy with his dunya!
Whom illusions of a long lifetime have deluded
Was he not in a state of heedlessness
Until his appointed time drew near?
Verily death arrives suddenly
And the Grave is the collection-box of actions
Be patient over the dunya and its hardships
No death is there except at one’s appointed time

Abu Haatim Muhammad Ibn Idris related that he heard Abu Q'abissa saying that he had seen in his dream Suyan Ath-Thawri and asked him what Allah has made of him:

He Answered:

"I looked strugglingly at my Lord; He then said to me
Enjoy my being contented with you, Ibn Said.
You have been awake worshipping at the dark night,
With longing tears and a lover's heart.
Choose before you whatever you like,
And ask still for more. I shall not be far from you."

The old man had shed some of his grinding teeth and was therefore slow in eating, while the youth was swallowing up of the loaf and then sat aside complaining of his love, leaving the old man suffering in hunger. The youth was called Ga'afar... and the old man composed the following poetry:

What arose my doubt about Ga'afar is that Ga'afar
Swallows up the loaf and cries as having lost a camel
I told him that if he were indeed in love, he would not be glutton;
For love would have made him forget such gluttony

"I like the righteous though i am not one of them,
So as I may be favoured for their sake with intercession,
And I dislike those whose trade is disobedience,
Though we are altogether in the same trade

The poetry of Umayr as he threw his dates away rushing for martyrdome:

Hurrying unto Allaah without provision
Save piety and work for the Hereafter,

And endurance of struggle for the cause of Allaah.
Any provision is bound to depletion.
Save piety, goodness, and right guidance!

Hassan Ibn Thabit, the poet of Rasoolullah, writes about our beloved Rasool Sallallahi alaihi wasallaam:

When i beheld his halo shining
I covered my eyes with my hand for protection,
Fearing for my sight of his glory.
I can look at him only in glimpses:
A soul of light in a moonlike body.
Same as an ornament framed out of bright stars.

Malik Ibn Dinar rahmatullahi alayh said: "Once i forgot my prayers and fell asleep. I saw in my dreams an extremely beautiful girl with a sheet (of paper) in her hand, asking me if I was literate. Answering her in yes, she gave it to me, and I found written therein:

Having pleasures and aspirations distracted you
From the fair nymphs of Heaven,
Where you would immortally live
And play with fair girls in Paradise?
Get up of your sleep! Better for you
To pray and recite Qur'an rather then to sleep !

A friend who does not benefit at the time of hardships,
Is close to an enemy on the scales,

The friend does not remain, during all times,
Nor does the brother, except for consolation.

I searched the days, with all my strengths
for a brother to trust, but my search was fruitless,

The lands and those who live them were barren,
As though its people were not people [I wanted them to be]

Part from the days where you used to do as you wish
And restrain your soul when the decree of Allah is ordained

And don't despair over the events of the past
For none of the events of the dunya were ever meant to remain

And be a man who is firm upon his affairs
And whose character is that of pardoning and nobility

And there is no sadness or happiness that is continuous
Just as there is there is no comfort or pain

If you are a person who is satisfied with what he has
Then you and the owner of all possessions are equal

And upon he who's open valley death descends upon
Then there is no earth or sky to protect you from it

And the earth of Allah is vast but
When the ordainment of Allah descends even the open valley congests.

Who has found true peace of mind
In better, or perhaps in worse?
The businessman is worn with fear
Of loss in his commerce

The statesman lives in fretful dread
Of times and tides adverse
The potentate, for all his power
In thrall to angst and fears

For after every glad report
Comes news that rocks his piers
I’d envy the birds, but the nest, I found
Is oft where the kill occurs

By Allah, if a man had to live, in control
Of his life, for a thousand years
Indulging in every beauty’s delight
In a bliss that for life endures

With never an illness obstructing his way
And he never a worry incurs
And tranquility reigns, and his days are serene
And no noise ever reaches his ears—

None of that would avail him the first night spent
In the grave, when he ends his years.

There is no peace of mind for the one with intellect and sophistication in remaining stationary - so leave homelands and and go to foreign fields,

Travel! You will find a replacement for what you have left. Crash out! The sweetness of life is in crashing out,

I have seen that standing water stagnates, if it flows it nourishes, and if it doesn't run, it doesn't nourish,

If the lion doesn't leave his den he can't hunt, and if the arrow doesn't leave the bow it won't strike,

If the sun stood still in its course then people, Arab and non-Arab, would become bored,

Gold dust is as the earth thrown in its places, and oud is a type of firewood in its ground,

If one travels this, his ambition is honoured. If one travels this, he is honoured like gold.

The king of Sanjar wrote to Sheikh Abdul Qâdir Jailâni (Rahimahullah) that he wanted to grant the state of Nimroz to his khanqah. He replied,

May my fortune be blackened like the umbrella of the king of Sanjar,
if I have the desire for your kingdom.
Since I have achieved the kingdom of the latter part of the night,
I am not prepared to buy your kingdom for even a grain of barley.

The kingdom of the night is the worship of Allâh and performing tahajjud. As Moulana Rumi says that if you achieve the taste of one sajdah, you will also leave the kingdom like Ibrâhim Ibn Adham (Rahimahullah).

"In an authentic quatrain composed by Rumi, he tells us:

I am the servant of the Qur'an as long as I have life.
I am the dust on the path of Muhammad, the Chosen one.
If anyone quotes anything except this from my sayings,
I am quit of him and outraged by these words.

Junayd said: “I have never benefitted from anything in the way I have benefitted from these couplets which I heard from a slave girl who sang them in a room. She said:

When I say: Abandoning [of others for your love] has given me threadbare clothes,
You will say: If there was no abandoning [of others] then love would not be pleasant,
And if I were to say: This heart, passion has burned it,
You will say: Surely passion is the honour of the heart,
And if I were to say: What sin have I committed? She would say,
Your life is such a sin that no other sin can compare with it.

Junayd said: “I became stunned and screamed. So the owner of the house came out and said: ‘Oh master, what has befallen you?’ I said: ‘It happened on account of what I heard.’ He said: ‘She is a gift from me to you.’ So I said: ‘I accept and she is free for the sake of Allah.’ I then married her to a man, and she gave birth to a pious son who performed the Hajj thirty times on foot.”

Abu Nu‘aym said: “Abu ‘Ali al-Rudhbari was asked regarding the person who listens to musical instruments and says that he has reached a station in which the changing of situations does not have an effect. Al-Rudhbari responded, ‘Yes, he has reached. However, that is to hell…’ He also said: ‘Surely, those who are desirous of Allah find the sweetness of [their] desire — at the time when the essence of connecting to His proximity (qurb) is revealed to them — sweeter than honey…’ He also said: ‘In earning the world lies the disgracing of souls, and in earning the hereafter is its honour. How strange is that person who opts for disgrace in seeking that which shall perish over honour in seeking that which shall remain?”

Among his poems there are:

There is no wonder if all of that (wealth) which I have was to go,
Wonder is only in that small amount — how did it remain behind?
Take hold of the remainder of your soul which has become ruined,
Before separation comes, for this is the last breath.

That flower is no flower which does not have a pleasant fragrance
and that heart is no heart which lacks Allah’s love and remembrance.

"Your hope in my heart is the rarest treasure,
Your Name on my tongue is the sweetest word.
My choicest hours
Are the hours I spend with You -
O Allah! I can't live in this world
Without remembering You.

I LOVED THIS

Finding Life

True love is notheing but drinking the wine of eternity.

In this state, the soul finds life only by dying-
but I wanted things in reverse!

I thought, "First I will know you, then I will die."
He replied, "Whoever knows me never dies."
