The Meaning of Al Haneefiyyah

Adapted from “Lessons on Tawheed, Fiqh and Hadeeth”
For the Second Level of Continued Studies from the Curriculum of
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Translated by Abu ‘Abdis Salaam Siddiq Al Juyaanee

Al Haneefiyyah is the way of Ibraaheem (Alahis Salaam) which is to worship Allah alone sincerely dedicating all of the religion to Him alone. This is what Allah has order all of mankind to do, and the reason for which He created them. Allah the Most High says,

“And I (Allah) created not the jinns and humans except they should worship Me (Alone).” [Ath Thaariyaat: 57]

Worship, means to single Allah out Alone in all forms and types of (legislated) worship; thus the greatest thing that Allah has ordered us with is the establishment of Tawheed, which is to worship Allah alone; while the greatest thing which He has prohibited us from is Shirk, which is the associating of partners with Allah in worship. The proof for this is the statement of Allah,

“Worship Allah and join none with Him in worship.” [An Nisaa: 36]

Knowing Your Lord And The Fact That None Has The Right To Be Worshiped In Truth Except Him

Know dear student that knowing your Lord the Most High is the most fundamental principle which every human being is required to know. Your Lord Allah is the One who reared us and all of the creation out of His vast bounty. Allah is the only One we are to worship and there is no one who is to be worshiped other than Him. The proof for this is Allah’s statement,

“All the praises and thanks belong to Allah, the Lord of the ‘Aalameen mankind, jinns and all that exists.” [Al Faatihah: 2]

Everything other than Allah is created. Both you and I are created beings from the creation.

Allah is known by reflecting on His signs and creation. The night, day, sun, moon, seven heavens, seven earths and all that is in and between them are from Allah’s signs and creation. (Allah is the only One who created these things and thus the only One who deserves to be worshiped). The proof of this is Allah’s statement,

“And from among His Signs are the night and the day, and the sun and the moon. Prostrate not to the sun nor to the moon, but prostrate to Allah Who created them, if you (really) worship Him.”
[Al Fusilat: 37]

And,

“Indeed your Lord is Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth in Six Days, and then He Istawa (rose over) the Throne (really in a manner that suits His Majesty). He brings the night as a cover over the day, seeking it rapidly, and (He created) the sun, the moon, the stars subjected to His Command. Surely, His is the Creation and Commandment. Blessed be Allah, the Lord of the 'Aalameen (mankind, jinns and all that exists)!”
[Al ‘Araaf: 54]

Allah is Lord and Creator of everything in existence and the only One who deserves to be worshiped. It is incumbent upon the creation to worship Allah the way in which He deserves to be worshiped; alone, sincerely and dedicating all of ones religion to Him alone. This is Al Haneefiyyah.
