Muslims pray five times a day because they have been commanded to by Allah. Prayer brings one closer to Allah and reduces the temptation of sin; prayer helps one realise that Allah is always watching and helps one attain spirituality, peace and tranquility. It also instills a sense of humility when one goes into the masjid and bows down to their Lord.
The five prayers are: Fajr, Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib and Isha. These are the five obligatory prayers.
There are also supererogatory prayers that can be done before or after these obligatory prayers, or read at any other time for specific purposes (e.g. Salatul Tawbah or Salatul Istikharah).
