    Story: Internet Matchmaking (OP)

Here's my new story. I will be posting it in parts insha-Allah.

I try not to write any unislamic stuff in my stories but the stories are works of fiction and sometimes they might contain material not entirely islamic.

    ----

    Story: Internet Matchmaking
    Started Oct. 18, 2010

Saeid was crazy in love with the woman he’d met through an Islamic matrimonial website. The website was run by a national Islamic center which had masjids all over the country and so the service was available throughout the United States. Saeid had been to one of the Center’s programs where he met a brother advocating the service. The brother’s own daughter had found a practicing husband through the service, so Saeid knew he spoke from personal experience.

“Our representatives meet with the prospective spouse and their immediate relatives and talk to them ourselves, so we know who’s reliable, insha-Allah.” Brother Majid had said. “We look into the prospective spouse’s needs and personally find matches that fit those needs the most. If the prospective then want us to talk to potential spouses further or look into references, etc. we charge further. However, current first time costs are only $50 which can be paid when we find a match.”

So, after thinking a while, Saeid had agreed to sign up. And in a few weeks, he’d been informed of a sister named Khulood living in Louisiana who seemed to be his perfect match. One of the representatives had personally known her for many years and had vouched for her. So Saeid got her information and spoke to her and her family a few times, agreeing to meet them in three months. During this short time they would get to know more about one another through phone calls and email. Saeid spoke to the girl’s parents and brothers as well as an uncle. One time he even met the girl’s uncle when he was in transit in Saeid’s state while on his way to his country. The girl was originally from Morocco.

After three months Saeid finally went to see Khulood. But the shock was something that might’ve killed him! Khulood wasn’t at all the same person he’d seen in the few photographs he’d received. She was extremely overweight. He guessed she was at least 250 pounds. And from her behavior she seemed like she was suffering from depression which had crippled her actions. After meeting her and exchanging a few words, trying hard to hide his disappointment and anger, he was escorted to the male guest room where he met with her male relatives.

Now that Saeid knows the family had lied to him, what will he do? Find out in the next installment.

Subscribing to the thread. I have a hunch about what lies ahead (and it's not just the straightforward happy ending), but I won't spoil it for you others regarding the possibility that I might actually be right.

The old me would hope that the main dude ends up lonely, because that's reality. The guy doesn't always get the girl, and sometimes the hero dies. Welcome to the real world...

But the new me... well I want the dog to live, man. That's all I'm saying...

    Re: Story: Internet Matchmaking

Sorry about that.I couldn't log on a few days ago and then I got busy with work.

    Here's the next part.

A week later, they were at Kamal’s wedding party. The party was set in an Islamic manner, with the guests divided into two, the males in one part of the house and the women in another. The nikah was done at the nearby masjid and afterward there was a small party with drinks and sweets for the regular guests as well as nasheed songs. At night, the groom took the bride to his house and the next day there was a walima dinner for all the guests in the groom’s house.

The wedding went well. The best thing was that neither Khulood nor her relatives approached him or his family. However, he did see Khulood later as he was leaving the house. And he saw that she was in terrific shape and looked wonderful, wearing a black embroidered abaya and headscarf. And since their paths crossed in the lawns in front of the house, he could do nothing but to greet her. It would be bad manners if he didn’t, not to mention that it might hurt her too, and that was something he didn’t want to do. So he said, casually, “Assalamo alaikum, Khulood.”

“Oh, Saeid, I didn’t know you would be here,” she exclaimed when she saw him.

“Kamal is my long time friend, so I had to come. How are you doing?”

    “Better than ever,” she replied.

“I am very happy to hear that,” he said. Then, seeing that the situation was awkward and Islamically incorrect, he excused himself, and proceeded on his way while Khulood entered the main house.

That night, his mother inquired about the beautiful girl he had met in the lawns.

“I wanted to tell you about her,” she said. “But I didn’t know how. But now that you’ve met her, I’d like to ask you your idea about her.”

    “What?” Saeid said.

“You know, the girl you met in the lawns. She was the most beautiful girl in the whole party and is extremely polite and helpful. Not only that, she is Kamal’s wife’s cousin.

“Aha,” was all Saeid could say.

“So what is your idea about her?”

He shrugged. What were his thoughts? He knew that she was pretty and honorable. But what was her state of mind in fact? It was something he couldn’t trust. And although he had found himself attached to her, it was this thing that stopped him.

“So, are you going to tell me or are you going to reject this one like the countless others that we inquire about. Really, Saeid, sometimes I wonder if you are attached to someone and not telling us about it.”

And he thought, yes the one I’m attached to is this one. But didn’t tell his mother that. And since he saw that there was no getting out of this without an answer from him, he said, “You can’t know a person in one meeting. And marriage is something that has to be thought of with utmost care.”

“I am amazed you are talking some sense,” His mother said. “It is true, but we aren’t going to base our decision on just one meeting, of course. We will see her often.”

“Check everything out. I don’t want anything fishy.”

“Why should you think there will be any,” his mother asked. “Is it because of that matrimonial services that has made you so wary. Your sister and I watched her the whole night and saw her quite fit. She will make an amazing daughter-in-law, insha-Allah.”

Lania. He knew she had something to do with it.

“I leave it to you to learn everything and to make an informed decision,” he said quickly. Then excused himself to find his sister. She was sitting in the adjacent room near the window, looking out.

“What’s all this about Khulood?” He asked angrily.

She turned around to face him. “What are you talking about?”

“What did you tell Mom that made her like her so much?”

“Nothing,” she said, “I just pointed her out and said she was the prettiest in the room and then Mom didn’t do anything but follow her around. Really it wasn’t my fault.”

“I wish you’d not pointed her out at all.”

“Really, Saeid, everyone knows you’re in love with her.”

“That’s nonsense. I was impatient to get out of that situation.”

“But you aren’t over her. Always walking around like your head is someplace else, always sighing wistfully. It’s obvious.”

He sighed, “You know I can’t trust her.”

“We’ll do all the checking, don’t worry.”

“But not a word of this to Khulood until you find out everything. I don’t want her getting hurt again.” Then he left.

And he wondered why the situation had taken this turn. Why couldn’t they both go on with their lives instead of bumping into each other again and making things further complicated? He had helped her get out of her gloom but wasn’t that enough?

Still he hoped everything worked out and nothing happened to hurt Khulood. He worried about her more than anything.

A few weeks after returning home, his family informed him that they had done all the checking related to Khulood, including meeting relatives and friends of the family, and learned that all was good. And in coming weeks, they would be going to meet Khulood’s family to learn of their thoughts on the matter. His family wanted to know of his thoughts, and whether he was okay with it.

“It’s alright with me,” he told them. And wondered if this was fate? Or had he lost his mind? Could he trust her family after the initial deception? And why didn’t he tell his parents of that? He knew it was the one thing that would stop them from proceeding, so why wasn’t he telling them if he didn’t want to marry her? But he knew deep down that the fact was that he loved Khulood. And didn’t want anything to come in the way. Maybe Allah had answered his silent prayers to make things alright and now he would get what he wanted.

That night, he called Kamal and informed him of his family’s decision to meet Khulood’s family. He also told him that Khulood’s family should be informed and that they shouldn’t disclose anything about his past association with them.

A few weeks later, they were once again in Ruston, Louisiana, this time in Khulood’s house.

And discussing the prospect of Khulood’s marriage to Saied.

What will happen next? Will Saeid and Khulood remarry? Find out in the next installment.

    Re: Story: Internet Matchmaking

Saeid kept quiet throughout the proceedings, letting his family and Khulood’s make the final decision. He knew that there would be no complications from Khulood’s family since they had already gotten to know him. It took a few weeks to reach the final decision, but eventually, both families decided that the two would be married.

Saeid wondered whether to be happy or worried. But deep down, he felt peaceful. Although still worried about deceptions and lies, he felt that whatever happened, it was the will of God and that God would make everything alright. Especially since both families had prayed the Istikhara prayers several times before deciding.

A few months later, he and Khulood were married for the second time, this time in the presence of both families and friends and even relatives from back home. The party took place in Louisiana at a wedding hall and then the couple flew to Hawaii for their honeymoon. When they returned home to Saeid’s house, his sister’s marriage was being set up and a few weeks later, Lania too was married.

In the following few months, Saeid realized that not only was Khulood totally normal but also that she was the most amazing woman in every characteristic. And he knew that when you do something for God’s sake, God doesn’t let you down but makes the impossible possible.

Khulood too realized that having faith in God was the best thing, which was what she had learned from her previous connection with Saeid. It was something that could make you endure the most trying circumstances. And since she had had faith in God when she decided to end her first marriage with someone like Saeid, God had made everything work out.

And so, the couple lived happily ever after.

    The end.

    Re: Story: Internet Matchmaking

I am glad y'all liked the story & i hope you liked the ending. Was it a satisfactory ending for the story? did you expect from the beginning that it would end this way? Author of the book Beginnings,Middles, and Ends says that the writer makes promises at the start of the story regarding how the story will be and how it will end, and if the story ends differently, the reader feels unsatisfied, like he/she knows that that wasn't a proper ending. so i hope my story fulfilled your expectations.

oh and i didn't read the last comments until after posting the previous two parts. and you don't have to worry about causing a change in the story with your comments, as i didn't intend tp change the storyline after it was written.

Brother Futawwa, I would love to read what you thought would happen next.

The ending was... rather anti-climactic. I have to admit that I was hoping for a big showdown and a revelation and much drama.

But overall, I suppose it will do.

Perhaps a bit more substance at the end would've made it meatier but to be honest, I'm just glad it had an ending. Recently I read so many novels that leave the ending to your imagination that I wanted to throw the book out the window. I mean if I wanted to imagine things, why would I read a book in the first place ugh! So yeh, I feel I got my cupcake (well it was short story) and eaten it too. Well done!

    Re: Story: Internet Matchmaking

ur story kinda reminded me of this Can't blame you for thinking
That you never really knew me at all
    I tried to deny you
But nothing ever made me feel so wrong

I thought I was protecting you
From everything that I go through
But I know that we got lost along the way

Here I am with all my heart
    I hope you understand
I know I let you down
    But I'm never gonna make
    That mistake again
    You brought me closer
    To who I really am
    Come take my hand
I want the world to see
    What you mean to me
    What you mean to me

which is weird cuz its been ages since i stopped listening to music n i still remember this :S

Ohh, I HATE it when movies and books do that. I want an ending; I want closure. It just makes me want to rewrite the story and do my own ending whenever I see that in a book or movie.

    Re: Story: Internet Matchmaking

Good story about having faith and for girls who loose hope and judge themselves too harshly upon being rejected by un suitable suitors. well done writer !

BUT, in Islam, YOU CANT GET MARRIED twice to the same person , without the girl having married another man, and gotten divorced.. OOPS
sorry guys but there's one tiny lil techinal glitch there in the story

(but correct me if im wrong, he did get married to khulood in the beginning right?)

Maybe she got married to someone else "off camera" and it was just never mentioned...

I suspected that Kamal's wedding was another setup to get the protagonist to meet Khulood again
