Fasting helps us to be better Muslim if we take effects.

Fasting is prescibed by Allah in Quran. There are obligatory and voluntary fasting. Of the obligatory, is Fasting in Ramadan, starting when new moon has been sighted, at end of the shaban. Allah tells us about fasting.

Al-Baqarah 2:183

O you who believe! Observing As-Saum (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqun (the pious - see V. 2:2).

Here He tells us that fasting can lead to piety. But we have to take more effects to achieve this goal. Fasting is not merely abstaining from foods and drinks, but also from our sins. Our eyes has to fast, our tongues has to fast, our ears has to fast, our hands has to fast... that is to abstain from sins and harm.

Hadith

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Allah said, 'All the deeds of Adam's sons (people) are for them, except fasting which is for Me, and I will give the reward for it.' Fasting is a shield or protection from the fire and from committing sins. If one of you is fasting, he should avoid sexual relation with his wife and quarreling, and if somebody should fight or quarrel with him, he should say, 'I am fasting.' By Him in Whose Hands my soul is' The unpleasant smell coming out from the mouth of a fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the smell of musk. There are two pleasures for the fasting person, one at the time of breaking his fast, and the other at the time when he will meet his Lord; then he will be pleased because of his fasting."

Unfortunately, we do not see Ramadan as blessing from Allah. Some of us see fasting as burden rather than blessing when Allah told us that fasting is better if we knew. Some treat Ramadan as month of sleeping rather than worship, sleeping the whole day. Some treat it as month of feast, extravagant iftar and suhoor.

Some of us only pray 2 rakat of tareweeh then they end up leaving immediately.

Unfortunately this is common. We have no sincerity toward Allah, we do not feel concerned with our religion. This is actually told by Prophet peace be upon him.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

"There are people who fast and get nothing from their fast except hunger, and there are those who pray and get nothing from their prayer but a sleepless night."

Rather than acting like this, we should make our best effects. Start reading Qur'an, try to recite more dikhr, like la ilaha illallah, which is best dikhr as per hadith. We should help poor people, give them charity. We should try to avoid idle talks. We should meet our brothers with cheerful face, as that is sunnah.

May Allah help us to be better muslims and make us among Al-Muttaqun
