where do you muster up the will power to overcome something, give something up, etc when it is just so much easier to give up and give in?
I look at the positive side of overcoming something. It is easier in the short term to give up but in the long-term, you are going to face serious consequences. It does depend on exactly what we are talking about.
For me, I focus on the positive rather than the negative.
sometimes our iman affects our outlook on things. for example perhaps one has sinned or just generally isn't as good of a Muslim as they should/could be...they therefore feel like a hypocrite/coward and get into the mindset of "well whats the point, im a hypocrite anyway as if i could be of any help." sometimes their energy levels are at extremely low levels and cant seem to do simple tasks. they tend to feel a bit cowardly and dont wish to go forward with certain things as they feel they may bring more harm than good...as you can tell, they feel quite restrained. but they really do want to improve and get out of these shackles.
are these feelings of cowardice/hypocrisy due to their low eman (between sinning and these feelings of hypocrisy/coward, why wouldn't they be...it only makes sense, no?). how can they tell if its due to low iman or if its normal humanly feelings? (it normal for people to sometimes feel like rubbish sometimes).
what would you advise someone like this?
...desperate for husnul-khitaam...
please make dua that Allah grants me a good end (to my life). please make dua that Allah guides me.
if you find it difficult to resist something then find a blemish or a negative aspect regarding that thing and just focus on it....it will make it easier to abstain from it
for example, if you like sugary cup cakes then a negative aspect you could focus on could be its non existing nutritional value and that it will definitely decay your teeth, you dont want that to happen so to abstain from eating cup cakes create this image in your mind of decaying teeth and cup cakes with monster faces possessing big chisels waiting to carve your teeth up
U can always change something about urself if thats what u really want n believe. Beating urself up about it n being too hard on urself isn't always the answer. So u realise u got some bad traits, thats normal but u can't always stress urself out about it so much that it blocks u from seeing the fact that u can change. Change ur way of thinking n the way u view urself, we tend to become what we think. Thats the biggest start, than u move on to practical steps: Avoid whatever it is that makes u feel like a hypocrite or a coward.
We all make mistakes n thank god we do cause thats how we learn to better ourselves.

By not ruminating over it. Thinking is an obstacle to pure will as often as it is an aid.
Peace be to any prophets I may have mentioned above. Praised and exalted be my Maker, if I have mentioned Him. (Come to think of it praise Him anyway.)
