So I just discovered that m&ms aren't halal, at least the red ones aren't as they contain carmine - I was a little horrified because I absolutely adore m&ms and I could (and have) eaten bucketfuls of them as I assumed they'd just be halal, which is of course a mistake I'll learn from.
Anyway, I was discussing this a sister I know. As it is only the red ones which are not halal, would it be okay to just not eat the red ones and eat the other colours, or is it better to just not eat them altogether?
I was thinking there would be an issue about contamination, even if it is a dry food.
I'm just trying not to count right now the number of red m&ms I have eaten in my life .

I'm unsure about picking out the non-red ones, but I'd assume that if it's haram to consume, then it's haram to buy in the first place. You wouldn't want to support a product that uses haram ingredients, and I think if you really love their product, you should let them know that you will no longer buy it because it's not halal nor suitable for vegetarians due to the carmine so that they'll know this is an issue that they should resolve.
I remember a longggg time ago, I used to love starbursts candy. They used to use gelatin in them and when I found out I stopped eating them and let everyone around me know (they hated me for it) so after quite a few years of not consuming them I just recently found out that it's now suitable for vegans. Companies can change their ingredients, especially if it's something as simple as a color. But when they choose not to make it suitable for everyone then we have to make the choice not to consume their products until they make those changes.
in sha Allah I'll get chocolate covered khajoor and of course, Ice Cream... we're never too old for ice cream lol
Scimi
Sukkary khajoors (dates right?) omg...on ice cream...topped with whipped cream and walnuts..no no pecans...and a light drizzle of toffee..and maybe some fudge.
..and no harm in having date cake on the side. Just a slither though, no one wants to go overboard here.
Those red m&m's are feeling kinda alone now. The new kids on the block (modern confectionary) cannot compete with tried and tested timeless classics like khujoor. Best part is, khujoor is good for us and it's sunnah whereas chocolate is chocolate - processed pathetic, having said that, I'd be lying if I said I didn't like chocomel and marabou. Lol
for the replies, I did throw away the packet of m&ms I was eating just this morning - none of them felt right anymore even after I did take out the red ones (and ain't nobody got time to do that anyway, lol).
@Scimitar
, women love that type of baby food which is brown and filled with hideous amounts of sugar and e-colours in brightly coloured packaging - it's like so much more cost-effective than diamonds and yet it gives equal pleasure . You can't beat that.
But chocolate-covered khujoors are nice. I really love those khudri dates, I should start buying them more regularly - they'll fill that empty space left by the m&ms.

That would like a piece of poetry - dessert heaven.
Altho a slither of date cake is not enough - it needs to be a huge mountain-sized plate of cake.

Also, just to point out, whenever you are buying foods such as yoghurts or sweets or juices, and they are shades of pink, orange, red or purple, definitely check the ingredients for carmine or E120 - basically a form of beetle which is crushed to create certain colours.
It can also be in cosmetics - definitely check inshaAllah.
Just can't believe how I was eating those m&ms, I'm like chronically obsessed with label-reading and yet I have no idea why I didn't even bother to read the packaging of that chocolate which is almost always in the kitchen cupboards. Astaghfirullah, honestly.
There are plenty of chocolate brands out there which are halal (including Cadbury's, thank goodness) and it won't take long to find a new favourite inshaAllah.
Or, maybe even go for chocolate-covered khajoors, which seem to be a new trend I've discovered here. Stuffed with pistachios and hazelnuts. And with ice cream.

I'm not trying to get diabetes here I'm too old now..my metabolism will fail me. But you youngins go on and have all the sweets you want before it's too late.
For the record, more than any other dessert, I'm in love with frozen yogurt (nonflavored) with some berries and a drizzle of honey and pistachio butter.
..and speculoos cookies for dipping in my milk tea.
I still haven't gotten used to the idea of having tea without chocolate digestives.
Oh,
and dunking them to the point of collapse and trying to catch the biscuit in your mouth before it falls into the tea cup lol.
I'm becoming quite the expert now
Scimi
I wish you didn't remind me. There's a brand of digestive biscuits called McVities..I assume you have it there..has chocolate on one side. I'm not allowed to get those anymore. Absolutely no self control with those.
