I was recently in Iran, and tried to log on to this site. My access was blocked by the government (I guess). Why would an Islamic country block access to an Islamic web site ? I think that stinks !!!
Greetings,Maybe they have blocked a lot of things under a general category rather than for specific reasons, in which case the block could be unintentional...
I came across THIS recently, its a list of the worst offenders when it comes to to internet censorship.
In alphabetical order,
Belarus
Burma
China
Cuba
Egypt
Iran
North Korea
Saudi Arabia
Syria
Tunisia
Turkmenistan
Uzbekistan
Vietnam
Libya, the Maldives and Nepal have just been removed from the list.
The part on Iran says'
Repression of bloggers seems to have declined in 2006. Whereas around 20 were imprisoned in 2005, only Arash Sigarchi is in jail at the moment. But Internet filtering has stepped up and Iran today boasts of filtering 10 million “immoral” websites. Pornographic sites, political sites and those dealing with religion are usually the ones most targeted. But since the summer of 2006, the censors have concentrated on online publications dealing with women’s rights. The authorities also recently decided to ban broadband connections. This could be explained by a concern not to overload the very poor-quality Iranian network, but it could also be motivated by a desire to prevent the downloading of Western cultural products such as films and songs.
Communication into Iran is fairly difficult, especially faxes. You have to go through an operator who logs your details, who you are, what you're calling or sending a fax for etc After all that the person/company may never recieve the fax anyway!
Syria has problems with emails. You can send an email today and they don't recieve it until like 2-7 days or something like that. Worse than snail mail! I heard it was so the government can filter the emails and it takes some time to do that.
Yeah, imageshack and photobucket are blocked. That makes a lot of sense, seeing that pictures can post pictures that are innappropriate and obviously haraam.
"...You are my Walî in this world and in the Hereafter. Cause me to die as a Muslim, and join me with the righteous." [Surah Yusuf 101]
