    Re: Collecting the 99 Names

Thought I'd start off with just a few insha'Allah. Note, these are just some of the evidences...there are obviously more places as well.

    Ar-Rahmaan - The Most Beneficent [55:1]
    Ar-Raheem - The Merciful [2:163]
    Al-Malik - The King [62:1]
    Al-Quddus - The most holy [62:1]
    As-Salam - The Bestower of peace [59:23]

Ok, I think I'll give other people a chance to continue insha'Allah

    Assalaamu Alaikum

There is this book called "Concerning the Beautiful Names and Attributes of Allah" by Shaikh Uthaymeen,

It has a list of Allah’s names found in the Quran with Evidence and Allah’s names found in the Sunnah with evidence. Too lazy to copy it out.

    99 names of ALLAH:smile:

What are the 99 Names of Allah?

    Asma al-Husna

The Most Beautiful Names of Allah

"...Nothing is as His likeness; and He is the Hearer, the Seer..." Qur'an [42:11]
(Arabic transliteration: Huwa Allathi Laysa Ka Mithlihi Shay'un Wa Huwa As-Sami' ul-Basir)

Names 1-50 Go to Names 51-99

    Allah
    The Greatest Name
    In the Name of Allah,
the Compassionate Source of All Mercy Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; the Compassionate Source of All Mercy and Master of the Day of Judgment. We serve You and seek Your help. Guide us on the straight way. The way of those who have earned Your favor, not (the way) of those who have earned Your anger, nor (the way) of those who went astray. (Surah Fatihah 1-7) tr. Emerick

    1
    Ar-Rahmaan
    The Compassionate

The Most Gracious has imparted this Qur'an unto people. He has created people: He has imparted unto each of them articulate thought and speech. At His behest the sun and the moon run their appointed courses; before Him prostrate the stars and the trees. And the skies has He raised high, and has devised for all things a measure, so that you too, O people, might never transgress the measure of what is right: weigh, therefore, your deeds with equity, and cut not the measure short! and the earth has He spread out for all living beings, with fruit thereon, and palm trees with sheathed clusters of dates, and grain growing tall on its stalks, and sweet- smelling plants. Which, then, of your Sustainer's powers can you disavow?
    Ar-Rahman 55:1-13, tr. Asad
    2
    Ar-Raheem
    The All-Merciful

In the Name of Allah,, the Compassionate Source of All Mercy y. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; the Compassionate Source of All Mercy. Surah Fatihah 1:1-3

    Al-Malik
    The Absolute Ruler

And thus have We bestowed from on high this divine writ
as a discourse in the Arabic tongue, and have given therein many facets to all manner of warnings, so that men might remain conscious of Us, or that it give rise to a new awareness in them. Know, then that Allah is sublimely exalted, the Ultimate Sovereign, the Ultimate Truth: and knowing this, do not approach the Qur'an in haste,
ere it has been revealed unto thee in full, but always say: "O my Sustainer, cause me to grow in knowledge!"
    Ta Ha 20:113-114, tr. Asad
    4
    Al-Quddus
    The Pure One

And We vouchsafed unto Jesus, the son of Mary,
all evidence of the truth, and strengthened him with holy inspiration.

    5
    As-Salam

And know that Allah invites people unto the abode of peace,
and guides him that wills to be guided onto a straight way.
    Yunus 10:25, tr. Asad
    6
    Al-Mu'min
    The Inspirer of Faith

O you who have attained to faith! Remember Allah with unceasing remembrance, and extol His limitless glory from morn to evening. He it is who bestows His blessings upon you, with His angels echoing Him, so that He might take you out of the depths of darkness into the light.
    Al-Ahzab 33:41, tr. Asad
    7 Al-Muhaymin
    The Guardian

Unto you, O Prophet, We have vouchsafed this divine writ,
setting forth the truth, confirming the truth of whatever there still remains of earlier revelations and determining what is true therein. Judge, then, between the followers of earlier revelation in accordance with what Allah has bestowed from on high, and do not follow their errant views, forsaking the truth that has come unto thee.
    Al-Ma'idah 5:48, tr. Asad
    8
    Al-'Aziz

    For, Allah's are all the forces of the heavens and the earth;
and Allah is indeed almighty, truly wise!

    9
    Al-Jabbar

And they prayed to Allah that the truth be made to triumph.
    Ibrahim 14:15, tr. Asad
    10
    Al-Mutakabbir
    The Greatest

Allah alone is the ultimate Truth,
    so that all that men invoke instead of Him is sheer falsehood;
and because Allah alone is exalted, truly great!

    15
    Al-Qahhar
    The Subduer

    17
    Ar-Razzaq
    The Sustainer
It is Allah who has made the earth a resting-place for you and the sky a canopy, and has formed you -- and formed you so well -- and provided for you sustenance out of the good things of life. Such is Allah, your Sustainer: hallowed, then, is Allah, the Sustainer of all the worlds!

    20
    Al-Qabid
    The Constrictor

Aren't you aware of your Sustainer through His works? -- how He causes the shadow to lengthen towards the night when, had He so willed, He could indeed have made it stand still: but then, We have made the sun its guide; and then, after having caused it to lengthen, We draw it in towards Ourselves with a gradual drawing-in.

Asad
    22

    Ar-Rafi'
    The Exalter

High above all orders of being is He, in almightiness enthroned. By His Own will does He bestow inspiration upon whomever He wills of His servants, so as to warn all human beings of the coming of the day when they shall meet Him -- the Day when they shall come forth from death,

    30
    Al-Lateef

    The Resurrector

O People! If you are in doubt as to the truth of resurrection,
remember that, verily, We have created every one of you out of dust, then out of a drop of sperm, then out of a germ-cell,
then out of an embryonic lump complete in itself and yet incomplete, so that We might make your origin clear unto you. And whatever We will to be born We cause to rest in the mothers' wombs for a term set by Us, and then We bring you forth as infants and allow you to live so that some of you might attain to maturity; for among you are such as are caused to die in childhood, just as many a one of you is reduced in old age to a most abject state, ceasing to know anything of what he once knew so well. And if, O people, thou art still in doubt as to resurrection, consider this: thou canst see the earth dry and lifeless -- and suddenly, when We send down waters upon it, it stirs and swells and puts forth every kind of lovely plant! All this happens because Allah alone is the Ultimate Truth, and because He alone brings the dead to life, and because He has the power to will anything.
    Al-Hajj 22:5-6, tr. Asad

    The Witness
However it be, Allah Himself bears witness to the truth of what He has bestowed from on high upon thee: out of His own wisdom has He bestowed it from on high, with the angels bearing witness thereto -- although none can bear witness as Allah does.

    The Truth

And who is it that brings forth the living out of that which is dead, and brings forth the dead out of that which is alive? And who is it that governs all that exists?" And they will surely answer, "It is Allah." Say, then: "Will you not, then, become fully conscious of Him -- seeing that He is Allah, your Sustainer, the Ultimate Truth? For, after the truth has been forsaken, what is there left but error? How, then can you lose sight of the truth?"

    Re: Collecting the 99 Names

Question: I heard somewhere that the Prophet (peace be upon him) has 99 names? Is this true? What are those names?

Answered by Sheikh `Alî A. al-Jumu`ah, professor at al-Imâm University, Qasîm Branch

The names of our Prophet (peace be upon him) cited in the hadîth related by Jubayr b. Mut`im are five. He relates that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “I have five names: I am Muhammad, I am Ahmad, I am al-Mâhî for Allah eliminates disbelief by me, I am al-Hâshir since all people gather under me at the day of Judgment, and I am al-`آqib”. [Sahîh al-Bukhârî (3532), Sahîh Muslim (2354), Sunan al-Tirmidhî (2842) and Musnad Ahmad (80/81/84)].

These are the authentic names of the Prophet (peace be upon him) that he cited himself. There are other names stated in the Qur’an. Ibn Hajar writes: “The other names of the Prophet (peace be upon him) which are mentioned in the Qur’an are: al-Shâhid, al-Mubashshir, al-Nadhîr, al-Mubayyin, al-Dâ`î ilâ Allah, al-Sirâj al-Munîr, al-Dhikr, al-Rahmah, al-Ni`mah, al-Hâdî, al-Shahîd, al-Amîn, al-Muzammil, and al-Mudaththir. More names came in the hadîth related by `Abd Allah b. `Amr b. al-`آs which is al-Mutawakkil.

    Other famous names are: al-Mukhtâr, al-Mustafâ, al-Shâfi`, al-Mushaffa`, al-Sâdiq, al-Musaddiq and others.

Ibn al-Qayyim mentioned other names in his book Zad al-Ma`âd such as al-Qâsim, al-Dahûk, al-Qattâl, `Abd Allah, Sayyid Walad آdam, Sâhib Liwâ’ al-Hamd, Sâhib al-Maqâm al-Mahmûd. However, these are all descriptions and not really names.

What the questioner said regarding 99 names is not substantiated by any authentic hadîth related from the Prophet (peace be upon him).

Ibn Dahiyyah writes in his book devoted to the prophetic names: “Some people said that the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) names are equivalent to Allah’s names (i.e., 99 names)... "If someone were to search for them, he would find them to be more like three hundred names.”

He then goes on to enumerate these names in his book, referring them back to his sources in the Qur’ân and in different biographical works. He also mentioned the proper way of pronouncing these names and their meanings.

This is as far as I can go in this matter, and may peace and blessing be upon our Prophet Muhammad.

    Re: Collecting the 99 Names

    Hey snakelegs.

I think the odd number has to do with the fact that there are no equals to Allaah, He is One and He has created the creation in pairs, i.e. humans, animals, plants etc. however God is One and there is none like Him. [so there is no even to Him.]

Maybe thats why the odd number is emphasised so much. Allaah knows best.
