Sura 86:5-7

Salam

I've been exploring islam for few months and run into some things that i can't explain by myself. ie. sura 86: 5-7 says:
"Now let man but think from what he is created! He is created from a drop emitted - Proceeding from between the backbone and the ribs:"

I can't read arabic Qur'an so have to cope with english translations. So the problem is what does the line above actually mean?

It could mean the semen is coming from the backone/ribs area,
which i would find a bit of a bad explanation.

or it could mean the child is proceeding etc.

So how do you understand this? It would be nice if someone with arabic knowledge could tell the absolute meaning of the verses.

wa'alykum

You understand this verse by turning to an Islamic Science called Tafseer. Tafseer is basically the explination of the Qur'an. The best tafseer ever written is by a scholar called Ibn Khatir. This quote below is from a website called www.tafsir.com.

How Man is created is a Proof of Allah's Ability to Return Him to Him

Allah says,

[فَلْيَنظُرِ الإِنسَـنُ مِمَّ خُلِقَ ]

"So, let man see from what he is created!"

This is alerting man to the weakness of his origin from which he was created. The intent of it is to guide man to accept (the reality of) the Hereafter, because whoever is able to begin the creation then he is also able to repeat it in the same way. This is as Allah says,

[وَهُوَ الَّذِى يَبْدَأُ الْخَلْقَ ثُمَّ يُعِيدُهُ وَهُوَ أَهْوَنُ عَلَيْهِ]
​

"And He it is Who originates the creation, then He will repeat it; and this is easier for Him." (30:27)
​

Then Allah says,

[خُلِقَ مِن مَّآءٍ دَافِقٍ ]


"He is created from a water gushing forth."
​

meaning, the sexual fluid that comes out bursting forth from the man and the woman. Thus, the child is produced from both of them by the permission of Allah. Due to this Allah says,

[يَخْرُجُ مِن بَيْنِ الصُّلْبِ وَالتَّرَآئِبِ ]

"Proceeding from between the backbone and the ribs."

meaning, the backbone (or loins) of the man and the ribs of the woman, which is referring to her chest. Shabib bin Bishr reported from `Ikrimah who narrated from Ibn `Abbas that he said,

[يَخْرُجُ مِن بَيْنِ الصُّلْبِ وَالتَّرَآئِبِ ]

"Proceeding from between the backbone and the ribs."
​

"The backbone of the man and the ribs of the woman. It (the fluid) is yellow and fine in texture. The child will not be born except from both of them (i.e., their sexual fluids).'' Concerning Allah's statement,

[إِنَّهُ عَلَى رَجْعِهِ لَقَادِرٌ ]


"Verily, He is Able to bring him back (to life)!"

This means that He is able to return this man that is created from fluid gushed forth. In other words, He is able to repeat his creation and resurrect him to the final abode. This is clearly possible, because whoever is able to begin the creation then he surely is able to repeat it. Indeed Allah has mentioned this proof in more than one place in the Qur'an.

المسألة الرابعة : في هذه الآية قولان : أحدهما : أن الولد مخلوق من الماء الذي يخرج من صلب الرجل وترائب المرأة . وقال آخرون : إنه مخلوق من الماء الذي يخرج من صلب الرجل وترائبه ، واحتج صاحب القول الثاني على مذهبه بوجهين الأول : أن ماء الرجل خارج من الصلب فقط ، وماء المرأة خارج من الترائب فقط ، وعلى هذا التقدير لا يحصل هناك ماء خارج من بين الصلب والترائب ، وذلك على خلاف الآية الثاني : أنه تعالى بين أن الإنسان مخلوق { مِن مَّاء دَافِقٍ } والذي يوصف بذلك هو ماء الرجل ، ثم عطف عليه بأن وصفه بأنه يخرج ، يعني هذا الدافق من بين الصلب والترائب ، وذلك يدل على أن الولد مخلوق من ماء الرجل فقط أجاب : القائلون بالقول الأول عن الحجة الأولى : أنه يجوز أن يقال للشيئين المتباينين : أنه يخرج من بين هذين خير كثير ، ولأن الرجل والمرأة عند اجتماعهما يصيران كالشيء الواحد ، فحسن هذا اللفظ هناك ، وأجابوا عن الحجة الثانية : بأن هذا من باب إطلاق اسم البعض على الكل ، فلما كان أحد قسمي المني دافقاً أطلق هذا الاسم على المجموع ، ثم قالوا : والذي يدل على أن الولد مخلوق من مجموع الماءين أن مني الرجل وحده صغير فلا يكفي ، ولأنه روي أنه عليه السلام قال : « إذا غلب ماء الرجل يكون الولد ذكراً ويعود شبه إليه وإلى أقاربه ، وإذا غلب ماء المرأة فإليها وإلى أقاربها يعود الشبه » وذلك يقتضي صحة القول الأول .
واعلم أن الملحدين طعنوا في هذه الآية ، فقالوا : إن كان المراد من قوله : { يَخْرُجُ مِن بَيْنِ الصلب والترائب } أن المني إنما ينفصل من تلك المواضع فليس الأمر كذلك ، لأنه إنما يتولد من فضلة الهضم الرابع ، وينفصل عن جميع أجزاء البدن حتى يأخذ من كل عضو طبيعته وخاصيته ، فيصير مستعداً لأن يتولد منه مثل تلك الأعضاء ، ولذلك فإن المفرط في الجماع يستولي الضعف على جميع أعضائه ، وإن كان المراد أن معظم أجزاء المني يتولد هناك فهو ضعيف ، بل معظم أجزائه إنما يتربى في الدماغ ، والدليل عليه أن صورته يشبه الدماغ ، ولأن المكثر منه يظهر الضعف أولاً في عينيه ، وإن كان المراد أن مستقر المني هناك فهو ضعيف ، لأن مستقر المني هو أوعية المني ، وهي عروق ملتف بعضها بالبعض عند البيضتين ، وإن كان المراد أن مخرج المني هناك فهو ضعيف ، لأن الحس يدل على أنه ليس كذلك الجواب : لا شك أن أعظم الأعضاء معونة في توليد المني هو الدماغ ، والدماغ خليفة وهي النخاع وهو في الصلب ، وله شعب كثيرة نازلة إلى مقدم البدن وهو التريبة ، فلهذا السبب خص الله تعالى هذين العضوين بالذكر ، على أن كلامكم في كيفية تولد المني ، وكيفية تولد الأعضاء من المني محض الوهم والظن الضعيف ، وكلام الله تعالى أولى بالقبول .

This refers to EMBRYOLOGICAL development of testes inside mothers womb:-


A structure called "Intermediate mesoderm" is formed on each sides of vertebral column(spine).
Then it differentiates into 3 parts:-

1>"Pronephros" on each side of spine of NECK(neck region) of developing baby(embryo). It dissolves off & does NOT make any important structure in fully developed human baby.

2>"Mesonephros" is part of "intermediate mesoderm" between spine & ribs (thoracic region)on each side. It develop lots of tubules which later form testes. & sperms r formed in these tubules. Then testes migrates(proceeds) downwards from here to it's final place , scrotum. In some premature babies testes r un-descended completely & r found in abdomen & have to b surgically corrected.

3>"Metanephros" is part of "intermediate mesoderm" on each side of abdominal spine of developing baby.It also form tubulus & develop into kidneys. Kidneys r in pelvis of developing baby. Then they ASCEND to reach final position in upper abdomen.


These embryological stages have been discovered in recent past. & Allah's book indicated towards it 1400+ years ago.

Quran:86:5:"So let the man consider from what he is created.. 6:He is created from a fluid emitted. 7: proceeding from between the backbone and the rib. 8:Surely He(Allah) is able to bring him back (to life). 9:On the day when hidden thoughts shall be searched out.

(that is; He can duplicate the same processes of development again)

Right upper rounded ball is testes & Left upper rounded ball is ovary while Grey Mushroom-Like oval masses on lower side are KIDNEYS. Kidneys are formed in pelvis & then ascend to abdomen while Testes & ovaries form in Chest Region & then descend to scrotum & pelvis respectively.

So Sperm forming cells & eggs are from chest region of developing baby(embryo)

it is to show the contrast, the verse literally means:"created from flowing/gushing water", water in Arabic is used also to refer to semen.
and then:"Proceeding from between the backbone and the ribs.", the ribs and backbone are solid, hard in contrast to the fluidity of the semen, both being contained within the same body. It's not uncommon in Arabic to refer to a part and mean the whole.

some have said it means what brother sur posted^, note that it is not impossible for a verse to have multiple meanings.
