Greetings,
Ulysses by James Joyce, anyone?

Ulysses is my favourite novel by some distance.

It's witty, profound, complex and also the funniest book I've ever read. If you like puns and other tricks of language, this is definitely a book for you.

Each chapter is an experiment with language: one chapter is presented like a newspaper article; another is like a play; one chapter is written deliberately badly to suggest the tiredness of the characters; another imitates the complete history of English prose style (in order) comparing the development of the language to the development of the human embryo.

Basically, the book shows that there was no style of writing that Joyce couldn't produce. This exhaustion of styles reflects the feeling of the times after World War I, when a lot of people were thinking:

What do we do now?

It's not the easiest book in the world to read, so make sure you read an edition with a good introduction and / or notes. Also, make sure you've read Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man beforehand - Ulysses follows on from that book.

Peace

oh, didn't know that^ was in english:offended:, I read some passages in Arabic, quite well written I must say, if I had been in my novel reading days-two years ago-I would've likely read it,,

Anyone read 'The Count of Monte Cristo'?

Not only have I read it. When I was cleaning out my closet like a year ago I discovered that I still had the school edition one I was supposed to hand back in at the end of the year in 10th grade:-[

I want to read Marco Polo's "Description of the World"...Ahhh.

lol, I was just reading that when I last visited my grandfather. It was interesting. Kind of a nice light, topical book to read after dinner of something.

:sl:Jared Diamond is the name of the author. I also heard that book is very good and another book by him Collapse: How societies choose to fail or succeed is also a very good book. I definately have to read those books soon. :D

Hey I was just on a site that measures how many words you can read per minute. http://www.rocketreader.com/demo/flashDemo.html I recommend everyone check it out. Choose Step A I read 358 wpm. :w:

lol, that is cool.

It said I read 576 words per minute but that seems like a lot. I mean I might read faster than I thought but at 576 it seems like I should be reading a book a day. Or it could be that in relation to a book 576 words really arn't that much.
Or it might be that I just don't always make an effort to read quickly normally. I ono.

Still really cool test though:)

pls pls pls.....if anyone have this book:

"I am Legend" was a great book. You really feel the protagonist's desperation and frustration in being the last man alive.
