I'd say that is correct too. People do use it in the sense of marriage proposal eg: hamaari beti ke liye ek rishta aya he, meaning: there has been a marriage proposal for our daughter, or a marriage proposal came for our daughter. Also hum apni beti ke liye ek rishta dekhne gai the, i.e. we went to see a potential match for our daughter.

So I would agree with you that that is one of the meanings of the word.
