Muslims make up 20% of the world, and by global facebook statistics europe, oceania and north america combined probably compose well over half of the population of Facebook (where Muslims are a minority).

Pakistan blocks YouTube over “blasphemous” material

20 May, 2010

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has blocked the popular video sharing website YouTube indefinitely in a bid to contain “blasphemous” material, officials said on Thursday.

The blockade came hours after the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) directed Internet service providers to stop access to social network site Facebook indefinitely on Wednesday because of an online competition to draw the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).

Any representation of the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) is deemed un-Islamic and blasphemous by Muslims.

Wahaj-us-Siraj, the CEO of Nayatel, an Internet service provider, said PTA issued an order late on Wednesday seeking an “immediate” block of YouTube.

“It was a serious instruction as they wanted us to do it quickly and let them know after that,” he told Reuters.

YouTube was also blocked in the Muslim country in 2007 for about a day for what it called un-Islamic videos.

PTA spokesman, Khurram Ali Mehran, said the action was taken after the authority determined that content considered blasphemous by devout Muslims was being posted on the website.

“Before shutting down (YouTube), we did try just to block particular URLs or links, and access to 450 links on the Internet were stopped, but the blasphemous content kept appearing so we ordered a total shut down,” he said.

He regretted that the administrators at the Facebook and YouTube had not taken the content off despite Pakistan's protests.

“Their attitude was in contravention to international resolutions and their own policies advertised on the Web for the general public,” Mehran said.

The PTA issued a statement Thursday saying, “PTA would welcome the concerned authorities of Facebook and YouTube to contact the PTA for resolving the issue at the earliest which ensures religious harmony and respect.”

The PTA decision to block all of Facebook also cut Pakistanis off from groups and pages dedicated to opposing the competition, which have thousands more supporters than the competition does.

Along with the ban, some popular websites, including Wikipedia and Flickr, have been inaccessible in Pakistan since Wednesday night. But the spokesman said it happened purely due to a technical reason and no orders were passed against them.

He said the authority was monitoring other websites as well.

“BLACKBERRY SERVICES”

Siraj said the blocking of the two websites would cut up to a quarter of total Internet traffic in Pakistan.

“It'll have an impact on the overall Internet traffic as they eat up 20 to 25 per cent of the country's total 65 giga-bytes traffic,” he said.

After the PTA's directives against Facebook and YouTube, Pakistani mobile companies blocked all Blackberry services on Wednesday night but restored services used by non-corporate users later on Thursday.

“We have intimated to the Blackberry service administrators in Canada to block them and once it's done, the service will be restored fully,” said Farhan Butt, an official at Pakistan's biggest cellular company, Mobilink.

The closure of services worried Blackberry users.

“The biggest concern for us ... is the delay in decision making,” said Zahid Sheikh, head of information technology department at National Foods Limited in Karachi city.

“Our top officials and senior management are not always in office. They do travel and work from remote locations, and with this shut down, they can't access emails.”

Publications of similar cartoons in Danish newspapers in 2005 sparked deadly protests in Muslim countries. Around 50 people were killed during violent protests in Muslim countries in 2006 over the cartoons, five of them in Pakistan.

comment:

When you see that 25% of the country's internet traffic was on these sites, you realize how many people were wasting time. This will help them to do something else with their time, hopefully something productive. Shame on all the other so called Muslim countries for allowing such sites that attack Islam.

Facebook Menace - What we should do

The issue of Facebook and their latest antics against our Beloved Muhammad sallallāhu ῾alayhi wasallam has angered and frustrated the Muslim Ummah. The reaction of the Muslim Ummah in the face of such blasphemy is appreciated. This malevolence is not foreign to Islam and the Muslims. During the time of our beloved Muhammad sallallāhu ῾alayhi wasallam, individuals like Ka’ab Bin Ashraf , Abu Lahab, his wife and others were also guilty of defaming our Prophet sallallāhu ῾alayhi wasallam. Their fate is known to all.

Our responsibility as Muslims to our beloved Muhammad sallallāhu ῾alayhi wasallam is as follows:

1.To delete Facebook accounts and any other media that deems it acceptable to disrespect our beloved Rasoolullah sallallāhu ῾alayhi wasallam and never to reactivate them again.
2.To inform others of the above as well.
3. Deleting facebook is one form of expressing our love for Rasoolullah sallallāhu ῾alayhi wasallam. However, objective love of Rasoolullah sallallāhu ῾alayhi wasallam is to inculcate his teachings in our life.

We are not talking about “Muslims” insulting our prophet but it is non Muslims! If we scream and shout what is it going to achieve us? We tried that with the newspaper instead all newspaper around the world decided to print the picture with exception of few. The Quran says it is forbidden for us to draw him (pbuh).
Do you think is okay for Muslims to sink low and be violent over such things? Over 100 people died during protest all over the world. Has it stop them insulting our prophet? No! They just continued. They insult Jesus by calling him the son of God and draw but yet I don’t hear Muslims making such noise about it?
Nothing we do will stop them. We can scream and shout as much as we want, they don’t believe in our Prophet and that is also an insult on us.
Just look how low some Muslims went over this incident: there is a facebook group called Everybody draw Holocaust day (30 June 2010) created by Muslims. Disgusting...and you are telling me this is the way to go?

.

you could not understand My post. where i have said about muslim insulting prophets s.a.w .
what about our boycott and protest, you can't denied it's importance. you want also all of us to be hypocrites and we see our beloved prophet is going to be badly insult by jews, cristian and we all the time ignore it, then what the excuse we will have on the day of judgement infront of our Prophet s.a.w. Now Muslimah it's not fair. Our Belief completion required the love of our Prophet more than anythings. It's ok that there should be no Voilence, that we know this voilence is due to ignorance not due to peaceful protest or boycott and this voilence created by some opposite parties to restrict all that.
what the boycott has resulted every time you have seen, how they have shamely excused. Now why we could not get complete result of this boycott ? this is due to difference in Ummah. the Complete Boycott can stop these son of swines from doing these insult again and Now due to combined protest of ummah agianst these events, we can demand for international ruling on this insult of Scare Personality or beloved personalities of any religion. That there should be no insult to the scare personalities which related to other religion and which have no link with you, your freedom of speech should limited to you and your family, Offending other without any reason should be stopped through law.
Don't compare muslims with other shameless peoples jews who insults their Prophets. This is because they have made fun of their religion. they have no authenticity of their religion. Islam is pure and here every thing is natural as revealed. we have clear instruction for all things. don't teaches us new techniques, new ways. i have given in my last post what our religion teaching for our prophet Defense and dignity.
I don't say boycott is the only way to stop, we can use many other strategies throgh proper plainings.
You have arises a good point of Holocaust. Can you ask from those jews why they have restricted to speak on this event. why they can't bear person openly speaking on this events.

The best solution is to ignore them and will eventually be bored. If someone was to draw my mother and I would still ignore them.
Good they will be bored making insult again and again.
I am sorry, i think my that Question was not for liberal and shameless person, who don't have any kind of importance of his mother even. That Peoples are going to insult her badly and making without clothes picture of his mother and showing with unknown people doing adultery on the big hoarding in the whole city and he is just ignoring. Shame on these kind of peoples.

Sorry sister your liberal and silly points have no weight and importance for us.

WE CAN GIVE OUR ALL THINGS EVEN OUR LIFE FOR THE DEFENSE & DIGNITY OF OUR PROPHET (PBUH).

Well Said.
Jazak Allah Khair

Believe me you can protest all you like, it isn’t going to stop them. These people who are insulting our prophet are not necessarily Christians and Jews. There are mainly atheist you think they have every right to insult all religions. And you think “Draw Mohammed (pbuh)” group is insulting? You haven’t seen anything yet. Hence: why I deactivated my account 6 months ago.

*The Complete Boycott can stop these son of swines from doing these insult again and Now due to combined protest of ummah against these events, we can demand for international ruling on this insult of Scare Personality or beloved personalities of any religion.*

I don’t think this will ever happen considering most of these countries that permit insult to our prophet and their own prophets are secular not a religious state.

*That there should be no insult to the scare personalities which related to other religion and which have no link with you, your freedom of speech should limited to you and your family, Offending other without any reason should be stopped through law.*

I find this statement insulting. What are you suggesting, because I don’t necessarily agree with you I must have joined the stupid group and drew Mohammed (pbuh) all in the name of free speech. Get you facts straight pal.

*I don't say boycott is the only way to stop, we can use many other strategies throgh proper plainings.*

Boycotting, strategies and even violence would not stop bigots from drawing or insulting Islam. They are clearly bigots and have no intention to change.

* You have arises a good point of Holocaust. Can you ask from those jews why they have restricted to speak on this event. why they can't bear person openly speaking on this events.*

It doesn’t matter; using that as so called revenge against the creator (who are not Jews btw) and its followers of that group is childless and clearly not Islamic behaviour. If you think this is the way to go then go for it.

*I am sorry, I think my that Question was not for liberal and shameless person, who don't have any kind of importance of his mother even. You are so arrogant and childless. Firstly, if someone was to draw a picture of my mother, they do so to get a reaction. Paying attention to idiots gives them want they wanted in the first place. These people who are so against are bigots and stuck in their ways. You know absolutely nothing about me to even call me a liberal. Your silly judgement and to say I don’t care about my mother is uncalled for ....Go to hell.

Your thought and thinking style is very strange.
Your ideas have no support from Sunnah and life of sahaba r.a. keep on ignoring Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) big insult .
My post and messages are clear And i have also given the reference From sunnah and shariah ruling on this topic.
Unto you your religion, and unto me my religion.

So it's true. There was a ban on facebook in pakistan. Pretty sad, considering Pakistan gives Facebook a load of hits. I heard there's another initiative going on by non-Muslims to delete facebook in unison on May 31st.

Like I have you keep protesting against bigots. And they are bigots for a reason. I am simply turning the other cheek and making more use of my time with people that can change and need help. Like I said, you will achieve absolutely nothing and the idea of a law would be nice but it isn’t going to happen in these “secular” countries unless you can make a direct obvious link between these insults to racial hatred and violence towards muslims. If you can, maybe. And like I said you think this is the greatest insult in facebook against our religion? lol, they have insulted Allah (swt) himself. Facebook is just a place for hate towards all people not just muslims (Jews, black, Asian etc) but you continue...

Ok you two kids, behave now. Regardless of what reason anyone has Deleting facebook is one form of expressing our love for Rasoolullah sallallāhu ῾alayhi wasallam, and whether the kuffars there delete the page or not (which they didn't even at protest of pakistan), we should concern ourselves with what is important to us Which in this case is not to support the kuffars in their ways by remaining to be part of them (having FB account). Remember the hadith stating to stop the evil with your hand, if you can't than with your tongue, if you can then at least detest it in your heart and that is the weakest of emaan. It's our duty to abandon the kuffars and their sites whether it affects them or not, its a matter of principle. You don't go befriending a person who is cursing your parents out, so what about someone insulting the prophet?

Boycotting that site on principle alone should be enough. But if you want to look at it on monetary value. Facebook makes $2.39 per user visiting their site and having an account, that's how much you are giving to facebook to insult your prophet. Pakistan's internet traffic composed of 25% was going to facebook, so for example let's just say out of the 200+ millions of Pakistanis, even if only 50 million were visiting facebook that's 50 million times 2.39 = $119.5 million dollars facebook is making of Pakistanis alone. What about rest of the Muslims on there? So you see you are supporting the enemies of Allah and His Messenger by having your account there, and well lets just I would rather not be raised as one of them (kuffars) on Judgment Day nor as a supporter of them.

And since Facebook itself refused to do anything at protest of a nation (Pakistan) shows their position on this and I would venture to say it may even be obligatory for us to not have anything to do with that site.

Perhaps Muslims would be better off having their own separated Internet ('Muslimnet' or something). Because what is on websites world wide is just a reflection of world wide opinion. It is inevitable that that will include a lot of anti-Islamic attitudes.

^ These type of sites will always have some form of un-Islamic connotations. A MuslimNet would be just another matrimonial website type thing.

You are very poor in numbers
Actually total population of Pakistan is around 170 million
the internet users are around 50 million
facebook users are 2.3 million

after usa the second most users are from UK and they are around 27 million
so i don't know from where you got these stats

All this anti-islam, intolerant, islamphobe sites prove is that the bigots have learned to use the computer and are putting it to use so spread their vile filth. Don't expect us to sit aside and watch this, every action has a reaction and we will not let bigots have their way. The christains may be dead in their faith and let others say whatever BS they want about their religion, we still have faith in our hearts and zealous to stand for our religion.

And who owns that website? Even if its population is 170 million and internet users around 50 million, there is no way out of those 50 million users, only 2.3 million are on facebook. If 25% of all of pakistan's internet traffic is going to facebook, any one with "poor math" skills can tell you that's more than 2.3 million users.

I do agree that many people in Pakistan use facebook. Almost all of my cousins are on it? Except those who live in villages. But again, most of Pakistan's population lives poor lives, facebook would be the least of their concerns.

Personally I think Muslims should ignore it.
subhaanAllah! Would you ignore if someone was insulting your mother!? Would abu Bakr and Umar (radiAllahu anhuma) ignore someone insulting habib of Allah (sal-allahu alayhi wa salaam)? Did Allah Azza wa Jal ignore it!? Allhamdulillah, we're Muslims not Christians or any other religious followers. If we ignore today then they will do more tomorrow and so on and so on. Allhamdulillah, the Muslim ummah has defended any allegations or insults thrown at our Prophet (sal-allahu alayhi wa salaam) and we will continue to do so. Just because there is load of negative stuff on the Internet about our Prophet (sal-allahu alayhi wa salaam) doesn't mean we sit idle and do nothing and let that negative stuff pile on.

Even when Mohammed (pbuh) was alive, there were many people that insulted him in front of him and behind his back. And he did nothing but concentrated on our religion. I think our energy should be spent on bettering yourself and our countries (because there is a lot that need sorting).
And defending him (sal-allahu alayhi wa salaam) is not concentrating on religion? It is an obligation upon us to defend his honor (sal-allahu alayhi wa salaam). When he (sal-allahu alayhi wa salaam) was alive, Allah Azza wa Jal defended his Prophet and so did the companions of Allah's Messenger (sal-allahu alayhi wa salaam). We can't let bunch of stupid people walk all over us.

May Allah guide us all and destroy those kuffaar, ameen

Salamu alaykum Wa rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh...

I just want to clear something out. For us muslims, there should be respect among eachother even if we disagree with one another. No matter what, We are brothers And Sisters for sake of Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala. I was just reading some previous posts on this thread, and I see that A muslim said "Go to Hell" to another Muslim. This should not be tolerated at any cost. I am sure there are some non muslims enjoying over these arguements we are having. My advice is that we should cooperate with eachother and debate nicely. Personally, I think what Pakistan did was a good move even if their government is corrupt and treat their citizens bad.Rather, we should make dua if We cannot do anything by action to change the government.

Wallahi, I never knew that Facebook makes money from each user. Also, if a website that allows events like "Draw Muhammad Day" and does not condemn blasphemy we should not support it. May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon Rasoolillah(Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) and all the Prophets of Islam. Please forgive me for anything. May Allah unite us and forgive us all. Ameen.
