Event : SPICE JOURNEYS : Taste and Trade in the Islamic World
Date : 18 Jan 2007 - 30 Jun 2007
Category : Exhibition
The story of the spice trade is closely linked to the global spread of Islam. Spice traders, the most prominent of whom were from the Middle East, travelled far and wide in search of trading activity. Their search had a notable impact on the course of world history in general, and on Southeast Asia in particular, where many valuable spices are still found.
The exhibition Spice Journeys highlights the role of Muslim merchants in the spread of Islam as well as raising awareness of the richness and diversity of spices and cuisines in the Islamic world. Among the avenues that are explored is the significance of spices and their importance as a commodity in the Islamic world. Ceremonies of hospitality such as coffee, tea, betel nut and incense indicate that to serve one’s guest was akin to serving the Almighty himself. Concern for the wayfarer – stranger, friend and kin alike – was expressed in terms of food, drink and shelter.
As the story of spices is ultimately that of people, the exhibition will engage the viewer in this experience. Scenes of bazaars, for example, will attempt to draw on all the five senses. In this way it is not information that is communicated but also a lasting experience.
A publication for the exhibition is available at the Museum Shop, please click here for more information.
Event : TRAVELLING EXHIBITION: RHYTHM & VERSES at the Alexandria Library, Egypt
Date : 03 Jun 2007 - 24 Jun 2007
Category : Others
Rhythm & Verses is a pioneering exploration of calligraphy in the Persian and Arabic languages through an examination of Iranian single folios from the 16th to the 19th century. So far, little research has been conducted or published in this relatively esoteric field. However, IAMM is now making its collection of 250 Persian calligraphic works accessible to the public through a comprehensive catalogue that examines these folios in detail, with translations of their content. From this assortment, IAMM has selected a collection of its most significant works for display in an inspiring re-creation of a calligrapher’s atelier.
The exhibition includes many of the Islamic world’s most revered calligraphers. Their works cover the major calligraphic styles – Naskh & Riqqa', Ta'liq & Nasta'liq, Shikasteh, and Siyah Mashq. These folios, with illuminations like rare and radiant jewels, are made more precious by their content – words of wisdom, advice, poetry, proclamations of faith, agreements of marriage and meditative calligraphic exercises, all executed by the skilful hand of the calligrapher. Here rhythm is lent to the pages with each fluid stroke of the artist’s pen, the visual lilt of the calligraphic curves and the melody of the verses in recitation.

THE ROLE OF ISLAMIC STATES IN A GLOBALIZED WORLD
17 - 18 JULY 2007
1) INTRODUCTION
Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (IKIM) is organizing an international conference on "The Role of Islamic States in a Globalized World" from the 17th to 18th July 2007 at the Best Western Premier Seri Pacific, Kuala Lumpur.
This Conference will be officiated by the Right Honourable Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato' Seri Abdullah bin Hj. Ahmad Badawi.
2) BACKGROUND
Unlike that of a wholly Secular State, the spiritual foundation of an Islamic State is the Primordial Covenant (al-Qur'an, 7: 172), whose fulfillment Muslim society must endeavour collectively by acknowledging God as their Lord.
Implied in this acknowledgement is the imperative to uphold Justice with all its dimensions: educational, linguistic, economic, political, juridical, technological and aesthetic.
While contemporary polity of the Globe is threatened with power-crazy politics, factionalism, and the deficiency of poverty programme, Islamic States must offer constructive alternative models.
Affirming the world of Nature as Divine Signs (ayat), Islamic States must contribute to the global strive to conserve the biosphere from pollution and deterioration, preserving the healthful ecological balance in the environment.
Affirming human rights to security, Islamic States must assist towards the global elimination of criminal violence and war. Affirming human need for a decent minimum of economic goods, Islamic States must reinforce the eradication of global economic exploitation and poverty. And affirming human ideals for spiritual excellence, Islamic States must provide high quality lifetime education for all its citizens.
The concept of an Islamic State is also appealing to other present-day religionists, as we are similarly against the secularization of nature, of moral values and of politics. Furthermore, Islamic State promotes alternative model of multi-racial harmony as the one which is based rather upon parallel ethics of world religions.
3) AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
The Conference aims to discuss specifically on the strategic modus operandi of revitalizing the Muslim Ummah in the global context - particularly through a system of education that is able to harness the human capital element.
Within this framework, major areas that will be deliberated are as follows:
i) the economic and financial system to suit the globally contextualized Islamic States;
ii) the management of global peace and conflicts;
iii) the orientation of science within the Islamic States;
iv) the future of Islamic Arts, Architecture and Languages; and
v) a critical evaluation of the administration of Justice in contemporary Islamic States.
