    Just Tell the Truth

    as-salamu `alaykum wa rahmatullah:

    Allah said (which means)

    “O you who believe! Have taqwa of Allah and be with those who are truthful.” (At-Tawbah 9:119)

    And, it is affirmed, in the agreed upon hadith, that the Messenger (sall Allahu `alaihi wa sallam) said:

    “Indeed as-sidq (truthfulness) leads to al-birr (righteousness) and al-birr leads to Paradise. And a man will tell the truth until he is written with Allah as truthful. And indeed al-kadhib (lying) leads to al-fujoor (wickedness) and al-fujoor leads to the Fire. And indeed a man will lie until he is written with Allah as a liar.”

    And according to Muslim, in his introduction to his Sahih, and others, the Messenger, sall Allahu `alaihi wa sallam, said:

    “It is sufficient for a man to be a liar that he narrates everything he hears.”

    Speaking other than the truth, or lying, is not the trait of a believer, and it is also a sin, and in cases where it is intentional, a major sin, and in the famous, popularly reported hadith, lying against the Messenger, sall Allahu `alaihi wa sallam, intentionally, warrants the threat:

    “Let him take his seat in the Fire.” And when one narrates what he thinks is a lie from the Messenger, sall Allahu `alaihi wa sallam, then:

    “He is one of the two liars.” As is also recorded by Muslim in the introduction to his Sahih, as well as others. And this is because even though he did not make up the lie, he did consider it to be false when he passed it on.

    So Allah has ordered being with the truthful, yet today, we find the common rules among our people;

    Whenever anyone says something that seems to support the truth of Islam, it has to be true, even if it is a lie.
    Whenever any of the Muslims do anything bad, it is either because of the Jews, or because of those who support them, and recognizing this rule and not remaining silent with it, means that you are one of their supporters.
    It is lawful to quote from any non-Muslim source in order to prove one’s point. For example, talking at length to prove that Islam calls for such and such action, since we heard or saw or read in the news, the “akhbar” of the non-Muslims. Or, such and such former British spy wrote this in his book, so we can cite this as proof against other Muslims.

    Rather, Allah has ordered being with those who are truthful, and who is it that makes lying, narrating lies, and the spread of falsehood seem fair aside from those who are not satisfied with what Allah has revealed; those who wish to lead others to al-fujoor (wickedness) and to the Fire?

    was-salamu `alaykum

    In the Name of Allaah, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy. By the time! Verily mankind is at loss – except for those who believe and perform righteous deeds, and advise one another towards the truth and advise one another towards patience.
