In Malaysia? The people dont say " Assalamu alaikum" as how it should be pronounced, instead it comes out something like " Sam Lay Kum" lol hehehe...
When I'm greeting my aunts/uncles I usually say Assalamu'alaikum followed by Apa Khabar (insert name of aunt or uncle ) followed by the traditional hand kissing.
With other people I just smile....I'm not much of a talker kay:

Traditionally it is, but we don't kiss other people's hand except the aunt or uncle or parents or grand, great grand etc.
But sis, I'll try my best to say the salam correctly.
As for me I normally will ask "Sihat?" which has the same meaning with Apa Khabar means are u in good health? followed by "Dah Makan?" means have you had your meal?

nooo, i neva use dat!!! it sounds weird and freaky meaning freshie!!! But alot of ppl in my area young boys and girls use it!!

Im from Bangladesh, but ive learnt arabic in so many different styles and dialects that it has affected my spoken bengali. Im moving to the UAE soon anyway, so the arabic should come in handy

oh rite i understand nw got abit confused there!! arabic is a very handy language which is very pure and will be the language in heaven! i need to learn it inshalah! i did not make assumption i was answering the question for prs4e, he did not answer it soo is it my fault? somewhere i mustve sed sumthing!! soz

You can go to many places to learn arabic now.
al-Baseera Institute for Arabic Language is very good. They have teachers from all over the Arab World.
