Omar Al – Mukhtar, The Lion of the Desert, leader of the Muslim resistance, “fought” Mussolini’s forces with faith and wisdom. Unlike some of Libya’s rebels today, who beg the imperialist NATO troops to come and bomb their country.
Omar Al-Mukhtar, the legendary Islamic scholar and Libyan hero, was hanged on this day 81 years ago (September 16, 1931) for resisting the Italian colonization of Libya. Today, and everyday, we remember his courage and bravery.
He was hanged publicly three days after at the age of 70. When he was asked if he wished to say any last words, Mukhtar replied with a Qur'anic phrase: "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un." ("To God we belong and to Him we shall return.")
