Imam Jalaludin as-Suyuti {May Allah have mercy upon him} said:
“The Companions RA knew it very well that the knowledge of Islam is for practice, not knowledge for the sake of knowledge. ‘Abdullahi ibn ‘Umar RA took eight years to learn the second Chapter of the Qur’an.”
(Durr al-Manthur fi Tafsir Bil-Ma’thur , The Scattered Pearls of Inter-textual Exegesis)
‘Abdullahi ibn Mas’ud {May Allah be pleased with him} confirms this when he said:
“When a man among us learned 10 verses of the Qur’an, he would not move on until he had understood their meanings and how to act by them.”
