Why did the Prophet (peace be upon him) say, when you go in unto your wives say "in the name of Allah"?
Some people think it is absurd and morally wrong to say such a statement before one is about to have sexual intercourse with his wife.
Let us look at the Hadith in its full content:
Narrated Ibn 'Abbas:
The Prophet said, "If anyone of you, when having sexual relation with his wife, say: 'In the name of Allah. O Allah! Protect us from Satan and prevent Satan from approaching our offspring you are going to give us,' and if he begets a child (as a result of that relation) Satan will not harm it." This Hadith is from the authentic narrations collected by Imam Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 54, Number 493
So we now know the main reason behind this, but could there be any other wisdom behind invoking God’s Name and protection before a man is about to have sexual intercourse with his wife?
Yes, another great wisdom behind this is that since it reminds the man of Allah almighty every time he is about to have sex with his wife, and since this becomes a habit for him to remember God before having sex with his wife, then if ever he is tempted to commit adultery with another woman, then he will remember God and fear Him, and maybe if he is truly a God fearing man, which he would have to be in the first place since he cared enough to obey the Prophet’s Hadith, then maybe he will not carry on with the heinous sin of adultery. If anyone argues why this shouldn’t be the case for women, then I would say to them that men are naturally more desirous than women, and they have less self control than women do.
Also people who say it is morally wrong to say in the name of God, before one is about to have sexual intercourse with his wife, think of sex between husband and wife as something disgusting, which was the case with the Christian monks and priests, but in Islam sex between husband and wife is not looked down upon, it is something that is considered sacred between the husband and wife. Also another group of people who think it is absurd and morally wrong to say such a statement before one is about to have sexual intercourse with his wife, are adulterers, because they feel guilty saying in the name of Allah before they commit their filthy sins.
And Allah knows best, salam (peace)
