Would it be okay to start hifdh if you only knew basic (level 1) tajweed?

    Re: Hifdh Question

Define basic tajweed? It is better for the student to know how to pronounce the letters correctly from their points or articulation and know their attributes as well as the basic rules of ikhfa, idgham, idhar, noon saakin, meem saakin and madd etc so they can memorize the Qur'an correctly. But you don't need to be a master reciter to start memorizing. My teacher never focused on tajweed much during memorization provided the student could recite correctly and made few tajweed mistakes. Once the memorization was complete, he would work on perfecting the student's tajweed mistakes.

    Re: Hifdh Question

I want to do level 1 tajweed at this institute, and it says you learn:
    - How to begin reciting from the beginning or middle of a Surah
    - Learn exactly where the letters are articulated from
    - The names of the places of articulation
    - The three types of Qalqalah,
    - How to understand the difference between heavy sounds (Tafkheem) and light sounds (Tarqeeq),
    - The four rules of Noon as-Saakinah and Tanween,
    - The three rules of Meem as-Saakinah,
    - The rules Laam as-Saakinah,

That sounds like a very standard curriculum. Looks good to me.
