    Alcohol’s impact on global health

    Assalaamu alaikum,

It became very popular about 20 years ago to talk of the health benefits of drinking wine. But as a new report from the OECD highlights: the harms of alcohol far outweigh it's benefits…

In 2010, only 38.3% of the world population aged 15 years and older had drunk alcohol in the past 12 months. Nevertheless, alcohol’s impact on global health is dramatic. In 2012 about 3.3 million deaths were attributable to alcohol consumption, 5.9% of all deaths. This is greater than the proportion of all deaths from HIV/AIDS (2.8%), violence (0.9%) and tuberculosis (1.7%) put together. In terms of the global burden of disease and injury, measured in disability adjusted life years (DALY s), 5.1% of all years of potential life lost in the world in 2012 due to premature mortality and disability were attributable to alcohol consumption (WHO, 2014).

… thus confirming what God, Glory to Him, the High, Told us in the Qur'an (2:219)

Shakir: They ask you about intoxicants and games of chance. Say: In both of them there is a great sin and means of profit for men, and their sin is greater than their profit. And they ask you as to what they should spend. Say: What you can spare. Thus does Allah make clear to you the communications, that you may ponder.

As the report emphasizes, alcohol does not only damage the liver, but it contributes to a whole range of health problems, from cancer, to heart disease, to injuries, and many others.

The idea that alcohol consumption should be encouraged for it's health benefits, then, is absolutely ridiculous.

May Allah, the One Who Knows, Help us to see clearly His Truth.

Re: Alcohol’s impact on global health

for sharing stats. Eye opening facts.

In UK, we have people who go Pubs regularly go "for a pint" as they say. Unaware of the harmful effects, then they have hangover the next day. Causing dehydration, weakness, vomiting, urine loss and many more. Then they go for the experience again, why would they want to go through those symptoms all over again just for a moment of pleasure while drinking?

Alcohol combined with bad behavior and drunkenness. This all leads to a spell of trouble. Take a look at some of these stats.

    - In England, in 2012 there were 6,490 alcohol-related deaths, a 19% increase compared to 2001

    - Alcohol is 10% of the UK burden of disease and death, making alcohol one of the three biggest lifestyle risk factors for disease and death in the UK, after smoking and obesity.

{You who believe! Intoxicants and gambling, (dedication of) stones, and (divination by) arrows, are an abomination of Satan's handiwork. Eschew such abomination, that you may prosper. Satan's plan is (but) to excite enmity and hatred between you, with intoxicants and gambling, and hinder you from the remembrance of Allah, and from prayer; will you not then abstain?} (Al-Ma'idah 5:90-91)

Re: Alcohol’s impact on global health

A lot of people like to have a drink so they can 'escape' from their problems.

Little do they realise they will wake up the next day with the same problem(s)!

In UK, the NHS staff have also stated that alcohol consumption is their biggest challenge.

What is prohibited is prohibited for good reasons - reasons that we may be able to see and other reason's which we may not be able to identify. If we follow Islam to the T it's in our favour! In sha Allah
