through my journey of becoming muslim and actually practising i USE to listen to music constantly literally could not stop, due to a dream i had which i believe was from Allah, i literally stopped from that day Alhamdulilah, i do sometimes find it hard to stay away as it was one of the harder things for me to give up, and some days I'm very tempted by it, so i gave my iPod to my friend so i can't listen to it so easily & deleted it off my phone (which was very hard indeed!)
when i was researching about music and why it was haram, and was told that nasheeds could be my alternative, i then read that nasheeds are allowed and others have said that nasheeds are NOT allowed... a bit confused ?
i always hear nasheeds on islamic videos as their intros so would like to clarify, before i take the step of putting them on my iPod
is listning to music acapella (no beat or instruments) allowed, where there is no bad message, swearing, or defamatory like most of music today
is this what makes music haram the instruments and message ?
is there a reason why the only musical instrument allowed is the duff drum (i think thats what its called)
(sorry but i missed class where the hadeeths of music were covered so wasn't able to ask these questions and always wanted to know these things)

Of course the obvious advice, don't listen to nasheeds all the time. Listen to Qur'an tilwat and beneficial lectures too.
Adding to what brother @Saleem Khan said. Nasheeds should bring you closer to Allah , Muhammad and the Qur'an. Then you know it's a good nasheed .
Take a look at these Lyrics by Maher Zain (Vocals only)
Every time you commit one more mistake
You feel you can`t repent
And that it’s way too late
You`re so confused, wrong decisions you have made
Haunt your mind and your heart is full of shame
Don`t despair and never lose hope
Cause Allah is always by your side
Much better than those popular music lyrics with no meaning.
Do you need a nasheed starter pack ?. I can recommend you some if needed.
I just started listening to nasheeds on radio through winamp media player ( its from another forum ) but i dont know where to find them
i know what there is debate about what is harram or what is halal can someone lead me to the right sort

I do occasionally listn to Quran (astagfirllah) i more watch lectures than anything.
the nasheeds are for when i need a music fix to keep me away from the haram music (that sounds terrible i know) , im still tempted but i do stay away alhamdulilah its still hard for me at times but its slowly getting easier for me by the mercy of Allah
In sha Allah brother if you could please, that would really help me out in sha Allah

Salam Alaikum sis!
About the nasheeds, you should know that there is and always will be difference of opinion about whether it is allowed or not. And you being a common person and not scholar, you are not supposed too much about the details of different fatwas. I personally dont like to listen to nasheeds with musical interments. Anyways what you are supposed to do is to always try to improve yourself, which Alhamdulillah you are already doing. If nasheeds are keeping you away from music, listen to them, maintain that level and try to improve yourself. Like if you were listening to nasheed with music, improve yourself to nasheed without music. If you are listening to nasheed without music, maintain it and improve yourself to listening to more of quran. If you are already listening to Quran, maintain it and improve yourself to inherit it in yourlife at the same time... similarly always try to improve. Life is short, and we should always try ourself to use it in most be beneficial way and improve ourself.
But i honestly dont like most of them they are like waaay too girly for me (am i terrible for saying that )
I like the ones in arabic if i had to choose as they sound more like Quran to me
But honestly coming from the music i use to listn to, it would bore me and feel like torture to my ears those types of nasheeds and make me miss music even more (sorry) (IN NO WAY DO I MEAN WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT, its just how it is presented to me in as slow "boyband" type feel ) (i feel like im sounding terrible )
Just a point i can listn to Quran and not feel bored at all (just incase anybody thinks im some shaytanic person )
