I think the younger they are the less it affects them. The older you get the more time you've been in a family and the more aware you become of your loss, fear, anger etc. Having said that divorce leaves its mark whatever your age. We're a part of two parents and naturally prefer to see them together. So the least parents can do is make the divorce as amicable as possible and stop biting each others heads off in front of the kids. And they should never talk badly about their ex. That person might be an ex but they are still the child's parent. It's also going to make the child think that back-biting is ok and at the end of the day when your child grows up and gets a deeper understanding of his/her deen, they will look back and think the parent who back-bited wasn't exactly pious either. Finally, whatever the situation, both parents must let the child know that they love him/her the same and they should both remain in the child's life as much as possible. That is the least divorced parents can do to limit the damage divorce does to a child.
