Have POSITIVE NEWS? Post it here!

    Report bad ads?

    Hi all

We seem to be very good at finding negative and divisive news and posting it here in this section.

I wanted to start a thread for us to share good news - whether from the media or from our own experiences.
Share a little happiness and joy, and bring a smile to our faces.

Can I ask that we keep this thread just for that? Good news and positive stories.
Without arguments or heated disagreements ...

    Thank you, and Peace

Israel and Syria Confirm Ongoing Peace Talks

Morning Edition, May 21, 2008 · Israel and Syria today confirmed for the first time that they've been holding indirect peace talks with the help of the Turkish government.

An Israeli official says two of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's senior advisers are currently in Istanbul with their Syrian counterparts; they have been holding indirect talks through senior Turkish diplomats since Monday.

Israeli officials say the goal is to restart direct talks and reach a comprehensive peace deal with Syria. A statement released simultaneously today in Israel and Syria said the two sides are committed to "serious and continuous" talks.

But the two sides have also yet to meet face to face.

Peace talks fell apart eight years ago over how much of the occupied Golan Heights Israel would be willing to return to Syria as part of a peace deal. Israel captured the territory in the 1967 war.

Just last fall, Israeli jets carried out an airstrike on what was alleged to be an North Korean-built nuclear facility in Syria.

The confirmation of talks comes at a sensitive time for Olmert. More direct negotiations with the Palestinians have made little progress, and Olmert is to be questioned again this week on allegations he took bribes from a businessman. Olmert has denied the allegations.

The unpopularity of Olmert — and his low approval ratings — leave him with little or no poltiical capital to try to convince skeptical public that a Syrian peace deal is possible.

Israeli officials say they are committed to holding separate peace talks with the Palestinians and Syrians simultaneously. The talks between Israel and the Palestinians have shown little progress to this point, and a growing number of moderate Palestinians are starting to questioning the basis of the process — the idea of Israel and Palestine living side by side.

Here is another one. Plans for the United 93 Memorial have been finalized. It is quite a beautiful design. There is to be a pond echoing the one created by the impact. The official site and design are remarkable free of political context. A person transported in time from 2000 would have trouble deducing what happened.

    Stray parrot talks way home

How is this for a happy story?

A stray parrot was reunited with its owner in Japan after repeating its name and address at the local veterinary clinic that took it in, police said.

Police captured the red-tailed African Grey, Yosuke, earlier this month after a woman called to say it was sitting on a fence in her backyard near Tokyo.

The parrot was then handed over to the animal clinic to be cared for.

It began by greeting people and singing popular children's songs, before repeating its name and address.

Police matched the name with its owner, who was reunited with Yosuke earlier this week.

The parrot had become lost two weeks ago after flying out of its cage in Nagareyama city, Chiba prefecture, near Tokyo.

"I'm glad I had taught him my address and name," the Daily Yomiuri newspaper quoted his owner as saying.

The African Grey parrot is considered one of the most intelligent birds and is said by experts to have the cognitive ability of a six-year-old.

Re: Have POSITIVE NEWS? Post it here!

    I actually posted this on a different thread, but you're Christian and this is one of your prophesies, so I'll post it here too;

But seeing Kamunyak for the first time is nothing short of witnessing a miracle. Appearing out of nowhere, the lion and the lamb curl up side by side. Fascinated, Saba follows them for days. She’s not alone in her astonishment, gawping gazelles bark out their alarm, not quite believing their eyes.

Re: Have POSITIVE NEWS? Post it here!

This is a happy story from my own life:

Good friends of our (a family of husband, wife and two children) have experienced much trouble and difficulties in the last three years.
First the husband lost his job, then he had several health problems (slipped disk, mild stroke), which meant he is now walks with a stick and is medically unable to work.
Then the landlord, who owns the house they have lived in for 18 years, wanted them to move out.
This went on for some time, the case going to court, and finally the deadline came close by which time they would have to move out.

Problem is, this family is in receipt of benefits, and most landlords don't want tenants on benefits ...
Social housing is very rare and the local council is already overstretched with people needing housing.
There was a real risk that our friends would become homeless and have to live in a B&B.

Two weeks before the deadline a house just across the street became vacant.
The previous tenants had left it is a terrible mess, BUT the landlord was willing to take tenants on benefits.

The problem was that to get the house into a inhabitable state, it needed complete redecorating, painting, new carpets etc ... and that takes time for the landlord - more time than this family had before being made homeless.

So the church they attend said 'We'll do it!' ... and that's just what we did.
Loads of people came in organised groups to clean, empty, paint, fix and decorate ... and within a week the house was a good as new!

It has been a wonderful experience to see how much people can achieve, when they have a common aim and are willing to work together! And it has been humbling to be a small part in all this.

And, thank God, this family has now moved into their new home, and the worry of being homeless is gone. Yesterday we met in their house to give praise to God for all he has done.

    God is good!

Burma 'to let in all aid workers'

Burma's top leader has agreed to let all foreign aid workers into the country for relief work in cyclone-hit areas, UN head Ban Ki-moon has said.

After talks in Burma's remote capital, Naypyidaw, with Gen Than Shwe, Mr Ban said the decision was a breakthrough.

    [...]

Burma's military leaders had previously refused to allow a full-scale relief effort by foreign aid workers.

Even though the quake suffering is terrible. Here is a positive story. I'm not quite sure how a breast feeding woman would have enough milk for more than two babies and the Chicoms are known to engage in some propaganda, but this is an irresistable stroy.

JIANGYOU, China (CNN) -- A Chinese police officer is being hailed as a hero after taking it upon herself to breast-feed several infants who were separated from their mothers or orphaned by China's devastating earthquake.

Police officer Jiang Xiaojuan, 29, was feeding nine babies at one point.

Officer Jiang Xiaojuan, 29, the mother of a 6-month-old boy, responded to the call of duty and the instincts of motherhood when the magnitude-7.9 quake struck on May 12.

"I am breast-feeding, so I can feed babies. I didn't think of it much," she said. "It is a mother's reaction and a basic duty as a police officer to help."

The death toll in the earthquake jumped Thursday to more than 51,000, and more than 29,000 are missing, according to government figures. Thousands of children have been orphaned; many others have mothers who simply can't feed them.

At one point, Jiang was feeding nine babies.

"Some of the moms were injured; their fathers were dead ... five of them were orphans. They've gone away to an orphanage now," she said. Watch the officer care for babies »

She still feeds two babies, including Zhao Lyuyang, son of a woman who survived the quake but whose breast milk stopped flowing because of the traumatic conditions.

Hahahahaha! I got it, lol. But seriously, we should open a thread like they have over on the Invoflad forum. They call it "Hate Box A Go Go" and that's where people go to square off. Not on a thread that's looking for positive news.

Also, maybe Glo should have re-titled the thread to prevent people from posting war propaganda and government PR here?

    Just a thought

SAN FRANCISCO, CA On February 11 more than two hundred participants began the Longest Walk 2, a five month cross-country journey on foot to spread their message that all life is sacred. The walkers have come together from many Native American nations and other communities in order to raise awareness about the environment, to visit and promote the protection of sacred Native sites, and to help clean up our Mother Earth.

People have come from as far away as England, Poland, and Australia to participate and support this historic spiritual walk. A group of Japanese Buddhist monks have joined the walk for its entire journey. The walkers are currently traveling along two separate routes on their way to Washington, DC, which they plan to reach in July.

"We're asking all peoples, of all colors, of all religions, to join us," said Wounded Knee, a 65-year-old California Mewuk. "We believe all life is sacred. So, we walk for world peace and justice and the environment, to heal Mother Earth." Those on the southern route are traveling through southwestern and southern states. Those on the northern route are walking across the center of the US, visiting Colorado, Missouri, Illinois, and Pennsylvania, among other states, before arriving in Washington. The northern route is the same route taken by the first Longest Walk, which celebrates its thirtieth anniversary this year.

The first Longest Walk occurred in 1978 in response to proposed congressional legislation that sought to change U.S. Government treaties with Native nations. The Walk was an amazing success: through education and peaceful demonstration, it generated enough popular support to stop eleven proposed bills that threatened Native sovereignty and treaty rights. The walk also led to the passage of the American Indian Religious Freedom Act. Many veterans of the first walk are participating in the current walk, and are educating a new generation of walkers.

Walk organizer Jimbo Simmons, who was on the 1978 walk said, "We feel like the human family has one commonality, and that's Mother Earth. We were trying to protect that [during the first walk], and we still continue to."

In addition to the work of education and cultural preservation, the current walkers are also doing the hard work of cleaning up our country's highways and roads by collecting debris found along the route. Participants are carrying specially marked trash bags and separating the collected refuse into trash and re cycling bins. The walkers are also listening to and recording the concerns and ideas of the people they meet from across the country, and preparing to deliver a message to Congress when they arrive in Washington, DC.

Those on the northern route are broadcasting a live solar-powered radio webcast every day, and walkers on both routes are posting daily blogs and photos from the frontlines of this historic walk.

    and a wee bit odd...

    but still good news...

    just odd:

Woman Wakes After Heart Stopped, Rigor Mortis Set In

Val Thomas’ doctors honestly can’t explain how she is alive today.

Thomas, who lives in West Virginia, is being called a medical miracle after she suffered two heart attacks and had no brain waves for more than 17 hours; reports NewsNet5.com.

Thomas’ heart stopped around 1:30 a.m. Saturday and doctors said she had no pulse. Rigor mortis started to set in, and she was placed on a respiratory machine.

“Her skin had already started to harden and her fingers curled,” Thomas’ son, Jim, told NewsNet5.com. “Death had set in.”

Thomas, 59, was rushed to a West Virginia hospital, where she was put on a special machine to induce hypothermia. This would allow her body to cool down for 24 hours before they would warm her up again, doctors explained.

However, Thomas’ heart stopped again after the procedure.

Her family said their goodbyes and Thomas’ tubes were removed, but she remained hooked on a ventilator as the possibility of organ donation was discussed.

However, Thomas woke up 10 minutes later and started talking.

“The nurse said, ‘I’m so sorry, Mrs. Thomas,’ and mom said, ‘That’s OK, honey, that’s OK,’” Jim Thomas said.

Val Thomas was transferred to the Cleveland Clinic so that specialists could check her out, but doctors said they could find nothing wrong with her.

“I know God has something in store for me, another purpose,” Val Thomas said. “I don’t know what it is, but I’m sure he’ll tell me.”

Had the non-believer known of all the Mercy which is in the Hands of Allah, he would not lose hope of entering Paradise, and had the believer known of all the punishment which is present with Allah, he would not consider himself safe from the Hell-Fire
