A Humerous Incident
Mutawakkil, the Caliph of his time, scolded one of his slaves thus:
"I heared that you beat up the Imam of a Masjid, and if you don't have a strong enough reason for this, I am going to severely discipline you!!!!"
"O Leader of the Faithful," he offered;
"I passed by the Masjid and the Mu'adhin was giving the Iqamah. I was running an errand for you so I quickly joined the prayers. After Suratul Fatiha, the Imam started reciting Suratul Baqarah: the longest chapter in the Quran. I thought that he would recite only a few verses, but he recited the entire chapter in the first rakaat."
"In the second rakaat, I really thought he would recite Surah Ikhlas or a similar short chapter , but he started with Surah Al Imran, the second longest chapter in the Quran; and he completed the entire chapter."
"The sun was already rising when he eventually completed his prayers. He then turned around and made an announcement 'All of you, please repeat your prayers because I wasn't in a state of wudhu!!"
"At this, I got frustrated and beat him up!"
The Caliph just smiled at this episode and let his slave leave.
Re: When is it allowed to beat up the Imam of a Masjid?
Greetings and peace be with you Khalid Saifullah;
An interesting story, and if you were looking to make an excuse for why you are late, the slave had the best answer. But and it is a big but, who was the slave putting first, himself or the Caliph, because rushing prayers did not seem to be putting Allah first.
In the spirit of making prayers count.
