Re: Muslim name or not??
I'm not sure if its an Islamic name...my friend is Iranian and her names Sofia and she's Muslim....I know it means wisdom in Greek.

Re: Muslim name or not??
Would it still be Islamic if I were to spell it with a Y, i.e. Sofiya/Sofiyah instead of Sofia?
Sorry, but I don't really trust the names sites because some of the ones i've been on have different meanings on each for the same name :-/

I think u can spell it really however way u see fit...
There are no rules..
Which way do u like the most? :sunny:
Example: Some people will spell Mohamed Mohammed, Mohamad, Mohhammed.
Btw Muslims are allowed to have non-arabic names so long it's not a demeaning/bad name..So there is really no requirement to have an arabic name.

Yup, plenty of names that are usually considered Muslim names aren't even Arabic. Take 'Khan' as an example.

Both spellings are fine. Transliterations are never perfect.

Re: Muslim name or not??
I like this name, but it's not Arabic and it's not like Safiyyah, it's got Greek origins and means "wisdom" which is a very nice meaning and totally accepted as a name of a Muslim girl. Safiyyah, on the other hand, comes from "al-safa'" which means purity in Arabic, and you can see the difference between both meanings.

Re: Muslim name or not??
what is Islamic names?
in Islam there is no Islamic names.. any name is allowed
but there is just one condition: it must has good meaning
even if the name came from Mars.. it is OK if it has good meaning
about "Sofiya", it depends..
if it is ( Sofi a صوفيا ), I don't know the meaning, the other members have said that it means "wisdom"
but it written as "Sofiy a/Sofiy ah/Sophiy a".. so it is not "صوفيا".. it is "صوفية"
and this means "mystic"
this is what I think!

And I guess "mystic" wouldn't be a good meaning would it?
