To be honest I never asked that question. I really don't care how old it is, the years behind it are of little importance. The minutes or centuries it has left are what matter.
Why? because thats the age of the oldest rocks by radiometric testing.

The general position is that Buddhists could probably spend their time more constructively than speculating about it; it simply isn't relevant and there is no 'position' on the matter in Buddhism as such. Buddhists would be happy enough to go along with the science.

Orthodox Judaism does hold that the earth is a few thousand years old, at least the circles I am in, however I will present to you the following analogy. Adam was created as a 20 year old, obviously in mature form. If Adam the day he was created as a 20 year old went to the doctors and was asked how old he was, he would reply "1 day old" and the doctor would of course laugh. The answer is that the earth was created in a mature form like Adam.
Why such a belief in the creation of a mature earth would scare anyone is beyond me. There are enough rapists and criminals running around our cities that taking a minute of your time being "scared" by such a belief in a way scared me more.

Plus, Adam & Eve: They have 2 kids Cain and Able.
Caine marries and has Enoch. Where did enochs mum come from?
How come less than a few dozen generations down the line from Adam, Citys are built and wars with thousands of casulties occour?
I'm afraid that to argue that the world is 4000years or 6000 years old is argueing that it's flat...just because it says in a pre-columbus book that it is.

Actually the Midrash speaks about the mature age of the earth and of man thousands of years before Carbon dating was created. You have brought up an interesting topic though.
Carbon-14 dating rests on two assumptions. (a) that the amount of carbon-14 in the atmosphere has always been constant, and (b) its rate of decay has always been constant. Neither of those assumptions have been proven or close to proven. Since the world was created in six days according to the Orthodox Jewish belief, who knows how the cosmic radiation in the atmosphere was fluctuating then.

So the Universe either exploded with the big bang and googliion tons of hyperheated matter swirled and coeleced together in well established astronomical phemomenons that we see happening to this day, and the earth seperated with the other planets from the sun and cooled forming a crust with its still molton inner core?
Or God thought one Monday, "Sheesh...bored...gotta do something this week"...and by sunday he had flatpacked the earth together, but made it old for giggles.

I really don't think you should use this approach. It just won't work, trust me... I've got some back ground in physics... carbon dating has been shown to be too reliable to be wrong by as much as say, a billion years.
Your best option is to say that since the world was created in a mature from, that includes the ratio of radioactive to non-radioactive carbon.
