السفرة الكرام - The Noble Emissaries

    Report bad ads?

InshaAllaah, I'm gonna post up some notes based on the series, "السفرة الكرام - The Noble Emissaries" by Yaasir Qadhi. It goes without saying, the only way to truly learn tajweed is under the tutelage of an authorised Qaari. The notes are on the theory aspect. Anyone who wants to make additions/corrections, please do so.

    Bismillaah;

السفرة الكرام - The Noble Emissaries
Lessons on Tajweed: the Art of Reciting the Qur’aan

The Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:
“The one who recites the Qur’an fluently, will be in the company of the obedient and noble angels.” [Bukhari]
    Definition of ‘Tajweed’

Linguistically, Tajweed comes from the root word ‘jawwada’, which means to improve, better, ameliorate, upgrade, make better.

Its legal meaning is to recite the Qur’aan, as it was revealed to the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), by giving every letter it’s rights, pronouncing it correctly along with the established rules and intonation.

Therefore, the science of Tajweed can be divided into two main categories:

    · Pronunciation of the letters

    · The rules and intonation

Re: السفرة الكرام - The Noble Emissaries

^ Ta'awwudh is to seek refuge with Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) from the Shaytaan. Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta'aala) mentions,

فإذا قرأت القرآن فاستعذ بالله من الشيطان الرجيم
"So when you want to recite the Quran, seek refuge with Allah from Shaitan (Satan), the outcast (the cursed one)." [16:98]

Re: السفرة الكرام - The Noble Emissaries

Al-Makhaarij al-Huroof (places of articulation of the letters)

There are 5 areas from which the letters of the Arabic alphabet emanate from.

    They are as follows:

    • the chest area
    • the throat (divided into 3)
    • the tongue (divided into 10)
    • the lips (divided into 2)
    • the nose
In total there are 17 specific places of articulation, derived from the 5 general areas.

    Ø The chest area

From this area emanate the 3 vowel sounds (not letters but sounds!):
    Ø a (الأَلِف)
    Ø e (الْيَاء)
    Ø u (الْوَاو)
They are known as the sounds/letters of madd (elongation).

    Ø The throat

From this area emanate 6 letters, which are divided into 3 categories:

Al-Makhaarij al-Huroof (places of articulation of the letters) cont.

    Ø The toungue

This is the primary area where sounds/letters originate from. A total of 18 letters!

It is divided into 10 specific areas.

    1) ق: furthest part of the tongue away from the mouth, connecting with the soft palate at the top. (back of tongue)

Qaaf 1 - السفرة الكرام - The Noble Emissaries

    2) ك: just in front of where Qaaf orginates, connecting with the hard palate at the top. (back of tongue)

Kaaf 1 - السفرة الكرام - The Noble Emissaries

    3) ي & ش ,ج:In the articulation of the following letters, the entire middle portion of the tongue is utilised. (middle of toungue)

    4) ض: when the entire left or right blade of the tongue connects with the ipper molars.

Dhaad 1 - السفرة الكرام - The Noble Emissaries

    5) ل: the front edge (not tip!) of the toungue connecting with the gum behind the canines.

    6) ن: similar to the laam, but here you use the tip connecting with the gum behind the canines.

Note: please do watch the video if you have time inshaAllaah; somethings cannot be effectively explained just by having it written down.
