With matters of the deen, it's best not to base it on our ideas, but on the practice of the Prophet and the sahaabah (may Allah be pleased with them).

And from the site linked to:

There are several occasions that are deemed as a blessing and gift from Allah Almighty other than Eid-al-Fitr and Eid-al-Adhaa in Islamic societies all around the world, and one such revered occasion is Isra or Me’raj that occurs on 27th of Islamic month of Rajab (the 7th month according to Islamic calendar). This year, Isra/Me’raj will fall on 17th of 2012.
Muslims commemorate this gracious event by praying to Allah Almighty and praising Muhammad (PBUH). They try to pray as much as possible this day to appease Allah (SWT). Muslims try to recite as much of Qur’an this day as possible.
Neither the Prophet nor his companions (may Allah be pleased with them) singled out the mi'raaj as an occasion for commemoration, neither taught us that. The israa wal mi'raaj was a tremendous happening that happened once, but there is no daleel for any kind of commemoration of it's anniversary every year on a specific date, either from the Prophet , the sahaabah (may Allah be pleased with them), and the pious predecessors. Indeed, the exact date is unknown.

There is nothing special or different to be done on this night. Neither the Prophet or his beloved companions (may Allah be pleased with them) did anything different on this night, either in terms of worship or anything else.

    Re: Shab-e-Mairaj

^thank you for this post. we missed Mi'raj night because we left our islamic calandar in syria & were pretty sad about it.

in any case, it was a beautiful occasion, for the Prophet (SAW) to go first from Masjid Al-Haram to Masjid al-Aqsa and then from there to the heavens. such a marvelous occasion!

also, it's worth pondering over that the horse of the Prophet (SAW) was called Burak which is derived from burk (lightning/electricty) and now space shuttles go at the speed of light.
