US Military Deems Homosexuality a 'Mental Disorder'

US lawmakers have called on the US Defense Department to withdraw a document which states that homosexuality is a "mental disorder."
Researchers recently found the Pentagon's directive 1332.38, on "physical disability evaluation," which includes homosexuality in a list of "mental disorders," along with mental retardation and personality disorders.
The November 1996 document was re-certified as "current" in 2003, according to the Center for the Study of Sexual Minorities in the Military at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
"It is disappointing that certain Department of Defense instructions include homosexuality as a 'mental disorder' more than 30 years after the mental health community recognized that such a classification was a mistake," Representative Marty Meehan of Massachusetts said Tuesday.
"There is no scientific basis for such a classification, which leads me to believe that the classification is motivated by something more sinister," he added.
Meehan and eight other members of Congress sent a letter to Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on Monday calling for changes.
They said "any inadvertent outdated language" should be updated so that military regulations are consistent "and in keeping with the American Psychiatric Association's stance reaffirming that 'homosexuality per se implies no impairment in judgment, stability, reliability or general social and vocational capabilities.'"
Lieutenant Colonel Jeremy Martin, a Pentagon spokesman, told AFP the document is "currently under review."
The lawmakers also called for a general review of the US military's policies and medical regulations. They estimated that there are about 65,000 homosexual and bisexual members of the US armed forces.
Since 1993, he said the US military has had a "don't ask, don't tell" policy under which gays and lesbians are tolerated as long as they do not make their sexual orientation public. Openly homosexual soldiers are forced to leave the service.
According to a Congress watchdog report released last year, the US Army has spent 200 million dollars in 10 years to replace the estimated 10,000 homosexual soldiers forced to leave the military.

Im sure there was an Hadith that this is a sign of Qayamat. When someone will do an evil act and we would be led to believe that it is mental and we could not help oursleves. I think it was in one of Sheikh Hamza Yusuf's CD's

Out of interest - and not really wishing to spark another homosexuality debate - how does Islam view homosexuality?
1. as a 'mental disorder' as the article suggests? OR
2. a learned behaviour and conscious life choice? OR
3. a condition a person is born with? OR
4. a combination of the above? OR
5. something else ...

The Sahaabah were unanimously agreed on the execution of homosexuals, but they differed as to how they were to be executed. Some of them were of the view that they should be burned with fire, which was the view of ‘Ali, and also of Abu Bakr as we shall see below. And some of them thought that they should be thrown down from a high place then have stones thrown at them. This was the view of Ibn ‘Abbaas.
Some of them thought that they should be stoned to death, which was narrated from both ‘Ali and Ibn ‘Abbaas.

i learnt in my psychology class that homosexuality is a combination of childhood events and chemical imbalances in the brain that causes same gender attraction

Yep, that's why it's a mental Disorder, and all homosexuals need to be institutionalized and treated till they get better, and not have rights and wonder the streets and be proud of their mental disorder...

Well.......I don't think Homosexuals see it that way ....Some of my classmates are homosexual and they told me that they were all born that way and that it is not somekinda disorder ....believe me they r actually proud they r homosexuals .....eeeeeeeeeeew...

Ya, thats what they say, and that is what they make themself believe, they are sick in the head. Everything might seem totally normal though.
And now people are becoming homosexual just for entertainment purposes... because they get more attention that way.
It's one thing to be a homosexual, but around society you act normal and don't involve anyone in your personal life, but it's another when you flaunt it out just for attention, those are the ones that are like a cancer to our society and should be treated or removed.
