A muslim brother of mine needs help

My muslim brother of mine wonders if it is haram to dye ones hair? I have no knowledge of it so I said that I cannot answer your question and I will try to get back to you if I find a legitimate answer. What I have briefly read is that it is only haram to dye ones hair black and the only color that can be used is red henna. Is that true?

I believe it is ok for women to use ammonia based hair dyes... just not men. The reason - I don't know, but I did once upon a time (facepalm) sorry.
