Ruling on aborting a pregnancy in the early stages ​


Question:

What is the ruling on aborting a pregnancy in the early months (1-3) before the soul is breathed into the foetus?.


Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

The Council of Senior Scholars issued the following statement:



1 – It is not permissible to abort a pregnancy at any stage unless there is a legitimate reason, and within very precise limits.



2 – If the pregnancy is in the first stage, which is a period of forty days, and aborting it serves a legitimate purpose or will ward off harm, then it is permissible to abort it. But aborting it at this stage for fear of the difficulty of raising children or of being unable to bear the costs of maintaining and educating them, or for fear for their future or because the couple feel that they have enough children – this is not permissible.



3 – It is not permissible to abort a pregnancy when it is an ‘alaqah (clot) or mudghah (chewed lump of flesh) (which are the second and third periods of forty days each) until a trustworthy medical committee has decided that continuing the pregnancy poses a threat to the mother’s wellbeing, in that there is the fear that she will die if the pregnancy continues. It is permissible to abort it once all means of warding off that danger have been exhausted.



4 – After the third stage, and after four months have passed, it is not permissible to abort the pregnancy unless a group of trustworthy medical specialists decide that keeping the foetus in his mother’s womb will cause her death, and that should only be done after all means of keeping the foetus alive have been exhausted. A concession is made allowing abortion in this case so as to ward off the greater of two evils and to serve the greater of two interests.

No. I am pro-life, but there are far too many people calling themselves Christians who do not appose abortion. I do not know if there is that split in the Muslim community or not.

It is wrong... unless mandated by a medical condition... though there are numerous problems that can arise in pregnancy the norm is that it is a natural physiological state not a pathological one... Some ladies with lupus have multiple abortions due to a hypercoagulability state... they are in fact sponatnous abortions, it is best in such a case however, to perform a DNC to make sure there are no products of conception that could potentially cause the death of the mother still left in the uterus. These aren't typically performed at abortion clinics! It is an actual medical emergency. Abortion for the sake of birth control, having made a mistake, poverty, promiscuity isn't a legitimate reason! There is no division in opinion. This is one of those areas where there is a clear black and white line.
 
My personal stance on the whole thing is, I won't view it as dodgy as long as it's in specific circumstances:

Firstly, if the child is the result of a rape

Secondly, if the birth will kill the woman

Both of these have the obvious caveat that the woman must actually want it, rather than being pressured into it. Some women would choose to keep the child in each of those cases, which is entirely their prerogative.

I'll leave this one to a religious scholar!... however I can tell you from a medical stand point that is very unlikely that a woman would get pregnant during a rape... I am not saying it can't happen!...I don't want to get into too much details of why it is unlikely, to keep it as innocuous as possible tissue trauma and shock of the event aren't very opportune conditions for a viable conception! It makes for a good story on a TV drama to make people stop and say hmmmmmn...but it is an unlikely event. At this point I'll leave it to someone who knows better

I prefer to not mention what I do for a living publicly, but I wouldn't give scientific advise unless I had a degree to back it up! I hope that answers your Q?
