Advice on spreading Islam

assalam alayikum,

If you were in my shoes, in a company in a base of the Us army, how would you go about the issue of spreading the word of God to your fellow soldiers? It bothers and worries me, I feel I fail if I kept silent but then again there is a thin line between being silent and being smart ( and prudent).

God says in the quran you must show and guide men to God, guide men and show them the truth. I am not accustomed to doing this in mass, but it is hurting my conscience. And I can not bear any indication of myself feeling fear( in regard to this). But the thin line again,
I ask you this, what would you do in my situation.
And I hope I have explained myself clearly. At least clearly enough..

It depends how well you know the people you're with. If you've been around them for a while, and they are comfortable with you, then just be prepared to answer any questions they have.

If you are new to them all, show them Islam by example. Islam is much less about talking and much more about doing. Pray your daily prayers, and do it openly. When you need to fast, do so. And so on. Why would people be interested in Islam if there is nothing to see, nothing to wonder about? Just be a good, peace-loving Muslim. That should be enough.

You can't really do in in mass. You do it one person at a time.

Keep in mind that teaching islam shouldnt be your main objective. Representing your deen and your creator come first. If you manage to reflect all the beautiful attributes of god, your fellow soldier mates will automatically be drawn to you. By being the best soldier you can be, people will notice you and they will recognise the fact that there is something different about you. Allah will draw those who are available, to you.

You need to capture that fine line between being totally the same as them, yet totally opposite to them so that they love and respect you enough to come to you and know your difference so that they ask you questions etc.

I know that this sounds rather theoretical and pretty impractical. That being said, I can guarantee you that I have seen this and experienced these things first hand. Just keep praying....
