Anti-Islamic claims

The backlash of the paris attacks have left many non muslims hateful towards Islam many have quoted the Quran stating Islam promotes violence and terror. Could someone explain to me the context of these quotes as I firmly believe terrorist attacks are not a representative of Islam.
