I was made such an offer..........dont even ask me to begin listing the problems!

I'm a euro american married to an Egyptian and have witnessed many arab/non arab marriages. Usually what happens is the wife looses her cultural identity and tries to become an arab. After awhile, she may feel lost and begin to resent her husband and the marriage.

In our case, we agreed to compromise. We're an Egyptian-American couple that takes the best from both cultures, leave the bad and relies on Islam. I didn't marry an american, so I cannot expect my husband to be an american husband. Likewise, my husband didn't marry an egyptian, so he can't expect me to be an egyptian wife.

I believe it is that compromise that makes our marriage healthy.

In short, if your ideal wife is like your mother, then marry a woman from your home country. If you marry outside your culture, you cannot expect your spouse to completely give up everything they've been raised with.

^good advice sis...

totally agree...

i've seen a few Arab men marrying a non-arab woman and alhamdulliah their marriage seems fine.

i don't see why it shouldn't be...i guess problems may arise depending on how issues are dealt with-like any other marriage really. i think cultural differences is a lame excuse for marital problems---> you can choose to make it successful or you can fail, its really up to you. however, its essential that both sides are willing to accept each others differences and learn how to deal and adjust to it. you have to accept that you're not from the same culture and therefore your thinking, etc will differ.

Thanx all sisters for your posts.....

still I want someone to elaborate

what cultural identity one may lose?

Are you asking what usually happens or what SHOULD happen?

i dislike when arabs, and im not saying ALL arabs, but some of them put culture OVER islam
likewise with Albanians, too many put being albanian before being muslim

i once got an offer from a Pakistani guy, and he was such a good muslim elhamdullah, he went to the same masjid as myself and my university.
when his parents found out about the offer they demanded he back out of it and leave me alone. we are still friends, but it was sad that his family put being Paki over being muslim.

I wanted to hear the arguments from the non Arab side, and then the other side judging them both with what Islam says....
